How Many Days Do You Need for a Safari in Kenya? Our Day-Count Verdict

Guests standing through the pop-up roof of a safari Land Cruiser driving on a dirt road at sunset, illustrating the travel time involved when planning how many days do you need for a safari in Kenya.

The email lands at 6:55am on a Tuesday and it has the same shape as most of them. Five days in Kenya. The Masai Mara, Amboseli, Lake Nakuru and Samburu if there’s time. Dates fixed, budget flexible, first safari. Underneath it sits one question: how many days do you need for a safari in Kenya?

Here’s the answer. Six or seven days for a first safari. Three days works only for one park, the Masai Mara. Four to five days does one region properly. Ten days or more is for travellers who want northern Kenya on top. Four parks in five days doesn’t work, and the arithmetic shows why.

We read the email at our desks on the Northern Bypass and do the sum before we reply. Nairobi to the Siana Conservancy in the Masai Mara is 225 to 250 kilometres, four to five hours by Land Cruiser. Nairobi to Amboseli is 220 to 240 kilometres in the opposite direction. Samburu is most of a day away. On paper that’s four parks in five days. In practice it’s roughly three days in a vehicle and two on safari.

We don’t tell people it can’t be done. We tell them what it costs. The price isn’t money. It’s the sundowner you spend on the Narok road, the afternoon drive you trade for a transfer and the leopard you’d have found on the third morning if you’d had a third morning. Three days is a taste. Six or seven is the safari. What follows is the evidence, and where we’d spend every day.

QUICK ANSWER | How many days do you need for a safari in Kenya?
Most first-timers need six or seven days for a Kenya safari. Three days works only for one park, ideally the Masai Mara by air. Four to five days suits one region properly. Ten days or more suits photographers and repeat visitors.

How many days do you need for a safari in Kenya?

Count nights in the bush, not days on the itinerary. A day that starts at a hotel in Nairobi and ends in a camp in the Masai Mara is a transfer day with an afternoon drive attached. A day that starts at sunrise in camp and ends at dusk in camp is a safari day. Every Kenya safari length is a mix of the two, and the verdict depends on the ratio.

Here’s our rule. Take the number of days. Subtract one for the road in and one for the road out unless you fly. What’s left is your game-drive budget. Three days by road leaves one. Seven days by road leaves five. Our live 3-day Masai Mara book-a-seat safari at Osero Camp follows exactly that shape: an afternoon drive on Day 1, a full day on Day 2 and a breakfast-then-drive-home Day 3.

Subtract the road and see what’s left. That number, not the length on the brochure, is your safari.

LengthWhat it buysOur verdict

11 to 12 daysA full circuit, Samburu and Laikipia includedFor photographers, families and repeat visitors.

What do you see in 3 days?

QUICK ANSWER | Is 3 days enough for a Kenya safari?
Yes, if you pick one park and accept the trade. Three days in the Masai Mara delivers lion, elephant and cheetah, and the Mara River from July to October. By road you get one full game-drive day plus an afternoon. By air you lose far less time to the road.

What a 3-day road safari actually contains

Our 3 Days Masai Mara book-a-seat safari leaves Nairobi in the morning and stops at the Rift Valley viewpoint. It reaches Osero Camp in the Siana Conservancy in time for lunch, then runs an afternoon Big Five drive. Day 2 is a full day inside the Masai Mara National Reserve with a bush picnic lunch. Day 3 is breakfast and the four to five hour drive back, with lunch on the road. Departures are capped at 6 guests per vehicle, so every seat is a window seat.

What you see: lion, elephant, cheetah, hyena and large herds of plains game, year-round. From July to October the full day is built around the Great Wildebeest Migration and the Mara River crossings. The Siana Conservancy sits beside the reserve on its eastern side, and conservancy rules on vehicle numbers keep sightings less crowded than the busiest reserve sectors.

What three days can’t do

Three days can’t give you a second chance. If the cheetah is asleep on the Day 2 morning drive, you don’t get a Day 4. It can’t give you two parks either. Anyone selling Masai Mara and Amboseli in three days is selling a lot of road. Our advice is blunt: with three days and two parks on the wish list, pick one.

Who it suits and what it costs

It suits travellers on a tight schedule, budget-conscious first-timers and anyone adding a safari to a business trip. The Osero Camp departure starts from $690 per person, with early-bird dates in April and May 2027 at $650. If you’d rather not spend nine hours of three days on the road, the 3 Days Masai Mara Fly-In Safari at Mara Serena Safari Lodge starts from $1,515 per person and swaps the Narok road for a scheduled flight from Wilson Airport.

What do you see in 4 days?

Four days is where the Masai Mara starts to make sense. It’s also our most booked length. The 4 Days Masai Mara Safari at Mara Elatia Camp sits in the Mara Triangle on the Oloololo Escarpment and runs from $1,440 per person, with early-bird departures at $1,380.

The shape is deliberate. Day 1 is arrival and a visit to the white rhino sanctuary on the 3,000-hectare Partakilat Conservancy, where eight white rhinos are managed in a 152-hectare inner sanctuary. Days 2 and 3 are full game-drive days. We enter the Masai Mara National Reserve through the Oloololo Gate minutes from camp, which means we’re on the plains by 6:30am while the big cats are still active. Day 3 pushes east toward the Talek River and the Mara River corridor, a different set of predator territories. Day 4 is a final drive, the road back and a farewell lunch at Carnivore Restaurant on Langata Road for guests flying out at 6:00pm or later.

That’s two full game-drive days plus a rhino afternoon and a morning. Compared with three days, you gain a full day and the margin to wait at a sighting. The cost is the same road: the drive is about 280 kilometres and takes five to six hours each way, or about 50 minutes by air to Kichwa Tembo Airstrip, which is 10 kilometres from camp.

Two variations on the same four days. If you’d rather drive and want a mid-range camp, the 4 Days Masai Mara Road Safari at Mtito Safari Camp starts from $1,800 per person. If you want a luxury camp on the Olare Orok River, the 4 Days Masai Mara Luxury Safari at Enkakenya Camp starts from $2,409.

EXPERT NOTE |
The Mara Triangle’s value on a short safari is access. From Mara Elatia Camp we’re through the Oloololo Gate within minutes, so a 4-day itinerary spends its hours in the reserve rather than getting to it. Camps on the eastern side near Sekenani and Talek take longer to reach the same drive circuits.

What do you see in 5 to 6 days?

Five to six days is the first length that lets you add a second habitat, and it’s where most first-timers should land. There are four shapes, and they cost very differently.

Five days, Mara only, by air. The 5 Days Masai Mara Flying Safari in the Mara North Conservancy at Royal Mara Safari Lodge starts from $4,000 per person. It’s a luxury, private-conservancy trip that buys depth in one place.

Five days, three habitats, by road. The 5 Days Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha book-a-seat safari starts from $1,000 per person. The 4-day Masai Mara and Nakuru version starts from $830. Both run on shared departures.

Six days, mid-range, three stops. The 6-Day Kenya Safari with Sopa Lodges covers Amboseli, Lake Nakuru and the Masai Mara from $1,670 per person.

Six days, flying. The 6 Days Kenya Flying Safari, Naivasha and Masai Mara starts from $2,490. The 6 Days Kenya Flying Luxury Safari, Amboseli and Masai Mara starts from $5,050 and is the cleanest answer we have to the question of Masai Mara and Amboseli in six days.

What the second habitat adds is species and scenery. Amboseli gives you large elephant herds on open plains with Mount Kilimanjaro behind them when the cloud allows. Lake Nakuru National Park adds a rhino-focused game drive in a compact park. Lake Naivasha adds a boat ride and, with Hell’s Gate National Park, a walk or cycle among the cliffs where you leave the vehicle behind.

Our opinion on the cheapest six-day option: the 6 Days Masai Mara, Nakuru, Naivasha and Amboseli book-a-seat safari at $1,335 per person fits four areas into six days. It’s honest value and an honest sampler. Three destinations in six days is a better ratio than four, so if you can stretch the budget, take the three-stop version.

Is 7 to 10 days worth it?

QUICK ANSWER | Is a 10-day safari too long?
Yes, if the days change scenery. A 10-day Kenya safari is too long only when it repeats one habitat. Add Amboseli, Lake Nakuru or Samburu and every day adds species. Add a fourth and fifth Masai Mara drive day and the returns shrink.

Seven days is the length where the trip stops feeling like a schedule. You can do three nights in the Masai Mara, two in Amboseli and a night on the Rift Valley lakes without watching the clock. Our 7-day Rift Valley Women Only Safari from Naivasha to the Masai Mara starts from $2,000 per person and follows that logic.

Ten days and beyond is where Kenya’s second half opens up. Our 11-day circuits, the 11 Days Kenya Family Safari from $3,185 and the 11 Days Kenya Luxury Safari from $4,625, both run from Samburu to Amboseli and take in Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Lake Nakuru, the Masai Mara and Lake Naivasha. The 12 Days Wild Frontiers of Northern Kenya Safari, from $12,400, links Aberdare National Park, Samburu National Reserve, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, Solio Ranch Conservancy, Ol Pejeta Conservancy and Meru National Park.

That’s the real argument for 10 days or more. You aren’t buying more of the Masai Mara. You’re buying northern Kenya, Laikipia and the Samburu species you won’t see in the south, including reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra and gerenuk. Ol Pejeta also holds the world’s last two northern white rhinos, which is a reason to build a trip around it.

A longer safari is worth it only when each new day puts you somewhere you haven’t been.

Seven versus ten, then. Take seven if it’s your first trip, your schedule is fixed or you want a manageable budget. Take ten if you’ve done the Masai Mara before, you’re travelling as a family that wants slower pacing or you’re a photographer chasing light and specific species.

How many days does each park need: Mara, Amboseli, Nakuru, the north?

Each destination has a nights figure below which you’re only visiting and above which you’re repeating. These are our numbers, built from running these routes.

How many days do you need in the Masai Mara?

QUICK ANSWER | How many days do you need in the Masai Mara?
Three nights is the right Masai Mara stay. Two nights gives you one full-day drive and little margin. Four nights suits migration season, July to October, when you want to wait at the Mara River. For most guests, more than five nights adds repetition, not new species.

The reserve covers 1,510 square kilometres and the animals move with rain and prey, so two full days will never show you the same thing twice. Three nights gives you two full days plus arrival and departure drives. That’s the structure of our Mara Elatia and Osero itineraries. For a deeper read on the reserve, conservancies and the Mara Triangle, see our complete Masai Mara safari guide.

How many days do you need in Amboseli?

Two nights. Amboseli is flat, open and photogenic, which means you cover its best ground quickly. Arrive for the afternoon, do a full day including Observation Hill and the wetlands and leave the next morning. If you can’t spare a night, the Amboseli National Park Day Trip starts from $199 per person. It leaves Nairobi around 5:00am and returns at about 6:30 to 7:30pm. It’s a long day, and the elephants make it worthwhile. For a luxury overnight, the 4 Days Flying Luxury Amboseli Safari at Kitirua Plains Lodge starts from $2,450 per person.

How many days do you need for Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha?

One night each, and often one night for both. They’re close to Nairobi, so they work as a gentle first or last stop on the Rift Valley. Our Lake Naivasha day trip from Nairobi from $215 per person shows how much fits in a single day.

How many days do you need for Samburu and the north?

Three nights in Samburu and two in Laikipia is the honest minimum for northern Kenya, and it’s why we don’t sell the north below six days. Add the Aberdare, Lewa, Solio and Meru and you’re at the 12-day circuit.

EXPERT NOTE |
The two numbers worth remembering are three and two. Three nights in the Masai Mara, two nights in anywhere else. Almost every well-paced Kenya itinerary we write is a variation on that pattern, with the Rift Valley lakes squeezed into one night.
Kibara Mugo, Safari Writer and East Africa Specialist

How many days do you need to see the Great Migration?

You need at least three nights, and four or five if the Mara River crossing is the reason you’re coming. The crossings run from July to October, with the heaviest activity in August and September, when the largest herds push north from the Serengeti. A crossing doesn’t run on a schedule. Herds gather at the bank, stall, turn back and gather again. The guests who see a big crossing are usually the ones who stayed.

That’s the case for the Mara Triangle. Camps on the western bank can reach the crossing sites quickly, and the Mara Conservancy manages the Triangle. Outside the crossing season the Masai Mara still holds resident lion prides, cheetah and elephant, but you shouldn’t book for the river in February. The wildebeest calve in Tanzania from January to March.

One cost note. The reserve fee on our Mara Elatia itinerary is $200 per adult per day from July to December and $100 from January to June. Migration season is also the dearest season, which is one more reason to spend your days wisely. Our Kenya park fees guide explains the split between reserve and conservancy charges, and the Great Migration page has the wider picture of where the herds are.

How much of your time do drives and flights take?

More than the brochure admits. Here are the figures we use when we plan, taken from our live itineraries wherever we run the route.

RouteDistanceBy roadBy air
Nairobi to Siana Conservancy (Osero Camp)225 to 250 km4 to 5 hoursAbout 50 minutes from Wilson Airport
Nairobi to Mara Triangle (Oloololo Gate)About 280 km5 to 6 hoursAbout 50 minutes from Wilson Airport to Kichwa Tembo Airstrip
Nairobi to Amboseli National Park220 to 240 km3 to 4 hoursAbout 45 minutes from Wilson Airport
Nairobi to Lake Nakuru National ParkAbout 160 km3 to 4 hoursNot applicable
Nairobi to Lake NaivashaAbout 90 km1.5 to 2 hoursNot applicable
Nairobi to Samburu National ReserveAbout 340 km6 to 7 hoursScheduled flights available

Do the arithmetic on a 4-day Mara trip. By road you spend 10 to 12 hours of the four days in the vehicle on transfers. By air you spend under two hours in the sky plus airstrip transfers. That’s roughly one extra full game-drive day, bought for the price difference between a road and a flying itinerary.

Our rule: four days or fewer, fly if the budget allows. Five days or more, the road is fine, and the Rift Valley viewpoint stop is part of the experience. On a road safari, plan the first day knowing you’ll arrive for lunch and do one afternoon drive. Our guide to a day on safari in Kenya, hour by hour shows how those hours break down.

EXPERT NOTE |
Two logistics points change day-count decisions. First, scheduled bush flights run from Wilson Airport, not JKIA, so international arrivals need a connection plan and usually a night in Nairobi first. Second, bush flights use soft bags with a strict weight limit, commonly 15 kilograms, so confirm the allowance when you book. Our Nairobi airports transfer guide covers both.
Hellen Asiko, Director & Guest Experience Curator

How much does each length cost?

Below are our live “from” prices per person sharing, checked on 2nd November 2026. Prices move with season and departure date, so treat the figures as the floor. For the wider picture, see Kenya safari cost 2027.

Per-day figures are rounded. On our book-a-seat departures the cost per day sits between $200 and $230 whether you take 3 days or 6, so a longer trip doesn’t cost proportionally more. You pay for the Nairobi transfer once and spread it over more game drives. Flying and luxury itineraries are a different price curve because charter-style access and conservancy camps drive the cost.

Four items sit outside the “from” price. International flights, travel insurance, tips and pre-safari accommodation in Nairobi are not included. Our baseline for driver-guide tips is $15 per person per day, within a range of $10 to $20, so a 7-day trip carries about $105 per person in tips at the baseline.

The cheapest day on safari is the one you don’t spend on the road.

EXPERT NOTE |
Read the per-day column against the verdict table. The jump from three to six days on a book-a-seat departure adds hardly anything per day, but it adds a second habitat. The expensive mistake isn’t a long safari. It’s a short one that makes you pay for a second trip.
Kibara Mugo, Safari Writer and East Africa Specialist

Which length suits first-timers, families and photographers?

QUICK ANSWER | What is the best length for a first safari?
Six to seven days is the best length for a first safari. It gives three nights in the Masai Mara and two in Amboseli or Lake Nakuru. You see two habitats without living in a vehicle. If budget caps you, take four days in the Mara.

First-timers

Six or seven days, one Mara stay of three nights and one second habitat. Read our first safari guide before you choose camps. If the budget is tight, the 4-day Mara Elatia trip at $1,440 is the best short safari we run. If it’s tighter still, the Osero Camp book-a-seat departure at $690 is our entry-level option.

Families

Families need shorter drive days and a second habitat that gives children something to look at besides lions. The 11 Days Kenya Family Safari from $3,185 per person is our answer, and it’s a length we’d recommend over anything shorter if you have children who can manage the pace. For age limits and malaria questions, read Kids on a Kenya safari. For a taste on arrival day, the Nairobi Day Trip from $295 covers the national park, the Sheldrick elephant orphanage and the Giraffe Centre.

Photographers

Photographers should take eight to ten days. You want mornings and evenings in the same place twice, because light and sightings change. That means four nights in the Masai Mara and two or three in Amboseli, where elephants walk toward Kilimanjaro on clear mornings. Ask for a private vehicle. Our Land Cruisers have pop-up roofs and cap a vehicle at 6 guests, and you can read the details on our vehicles page.

Couples, women travelling together and eco-minded travellers

Couples do well on four to six days with a flying leg, which is why the 4 Days Flying Luxury Amboseli Safari sells well for honeymoons. A balloon flight adds an early-morning hour in the air to a Mara day, covered in our hot air balloon safari guide.

Women travelling together can choose the 7-day Rift Valley Women Only Safari at $2,000, the 8-day Female Safari Kenya from Amboseli to Masai Mara from $2,330 or the 8-day Women of the Wild from Samburu to the Masai Mara from $2,445.

For a low-impact trip, the 4 Days Masai Mara Eco Safari at Emboo River Camp from $4,000 is our eco pick.

Does the time of year change how many days you need?

Yes, and mostly in the Masai Mara. From July to October you want an extra night for the Mara River, and you pay the higher reserve fee for it. From January to March the migration is in Tanzania, so the Mara is quieter and cheaper, and three nights is plenty. Amboseli is popular from June to October and January to February for drier conditions, though the greener months bring good birdlife.

The long rains are the one period where we’d add a day for slower roads and a margin. The honest summary is that peak season rewards patience and the quieter months reward flexibility. Either way, the day count follows the reason you came.

Five day-count mistakes we tell people to avoid

  • One night in the Masai Mara. You arrive for lunch, get one drive and leave after breakfast. Skip this. Book two nights minimum or fly.
  • Masai Mara and Amboseli in under six days by road. They sit on opposite sides of Nairobi. Do this instead: fly between them or add a day.
  • Treating the Rift Valley lakes as separate parks. Lake Naivasha, Hell’s Gate and Lake Nakuru fit in one or two nights. Don’t give them four.
  • Skipping the buffer night in Nairobi. Long-haul arrivals and a 7:00am safari departure don’t mix. Pre-safari accommodation isn’t included in our prices, so plan one night before Day 1.
  • Adding days in the same habitat. Day six in the Masai Mara is a weaker day than day one in Amboseli. If you have another day, spend it somewhere new.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need for a safari in Kenya?

Six or seven days suits most first-timers. That gives you three nights in the Masai Mara and two in Amboseli or Lake Nakuru, with no more than a few hours on the road on any day. Shorter trips work if you pick one park. Longer trips pay off when they add northern Kenya.

Is 3 days enough for a Kenya safari?

Yes, for one park only. A 3-day road safari to the Masai Mara gives you one full game-drive day and an afternoon, because four to five hours of each end day go to the road. A fly-in version gives you more time in the reserve. We don’t recommend trying to fit two parks into three days.

How many days do you need in the Masai Mara?

Three nights is the right stay for most guests. Two nights is the minimum and gives you one full day. Four nights suits July to October when you want time at the Mara River. The reserve covers 1,510 square kilometres, so extra days add ground, but beyond five nights the returns shrink.

How many days for the Masai Mara and Amboseli?

Six days is the minimum if you fly between them, and seven if you drive. Allow three nights in the Masai Mara and two in Amboseli plus transfers. Our 6 Days Kenya Flying Luxury Safari covers both by air from $5,050 per person, and the 6-Day Sopa Lodges safari covers them by road from $1,670.

How long should a first safari be?

Six to seven days is the best length for a first safari. It’s long enough for two habitats and short enough to keep every day productive. If you’re limited to four days, spend them in the Masai Mara, ideally with a fly-in leg.

What do you see on a 5-day Kenya safari?

A 5-day safari gives you one region properly or three habitats briefly. Our 5-day book-a-seat departure covers the Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha from $1,000 per person. Our flying safari in the Mara North Conservancy stays at Royal Mara Safari Lodge from $4,000 per person and goes deeper in one place.

How many days do you need to see the Great Migration?

Plan for at least three nights, and four or five if the crossing matters most. Mara River crossings run from July to October, peaking in August and September, and they don’t follow a schedule. The longer you stay at the river, the better your chances.

Is a 7-day or 10-day Kenya safari better?

Seven days is better for a first trip and a fixed budget. Ten days is better if you’ve done the Masai Mara before or want northern Kenya. The extra three days buy Samburu and Laikipia, not more of the same, and that’s the only reason to pay for them.

Is a 10-day safari too long?

No, as long as the days change scenery. A 10-day safari repeats itself only if it stays in one habitat. Add Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, Samburu or Ol Pejeta Conservancy and every few days brings new species. Children and first-timers should check the pacing before they commit.

How many days do you need in Amboseli?

Two nights is ideal and one night is the minimum. Amboseli’s open plains mean you cover the best areas quickly. If you only have a day, our Amboseli day trip from Nairobi starts from $199 per person and leaves around 5:00am.

How long is the drive from Nairobi to the Masai Mara?

It takes four to five hours to the Siana Conservancy and five to six hours to the Mara Triangle. The distances are roughly 225 to 250 kilometres and 280 kilometres. A scheduled flight from Wilson Airport to Kichwa Tembo Airstrip takes about 50 minutes.

Does a longer Kenya safari cost less per day?

On our book-a-seat departures the cost per day is nearly flat, between $200 and $230. A longer trip doesn’t cost proportionally more because the Nairobi transfer is paid once. Flying and luxury safaris cost more per day and don’t follow that pattern.

Plan the days that fit your safari

We opened with the email that arrives most weeks: five days, four parks, a first safari. After the drive times, the per-day costs and the verdict, you know why we answer it with a map instead of a quote. Three days is a taste, four to six days is the Masai Mara done well and six or seven is the first safari we’d book for ourselves. Ten days and beyond belongs to the north.

Beyond what’s here, Afrikan Accent Adventures is a Nairobi-based operator that plans every length from a $199 Amboseli day trip to a 12-day northern circuit. Hellen Asiko, Director & Guest Experience Curator, and our planning team will match your dates to the right length and tell you honestly when fewer parks is the better answer. Tell us your dates and we’ll tell you the right number of days, even when the honest answer is fewer than you asked for.
