Overview

About this safari

A Kenya luxury safari across six ecosystems: Samburu, Ol Pejeta, Nakuru, the Masai Mara, Naivasha and Amboseli, by road.

Most Kenya safaris pick one or two parks and stay there. This itinerary does not. It is built for travellers who want the full country: the Samburu Special Five in the arid north, black and white rhino face to face at Ol Pejeta, the flamingo-lined shores of Lake Nakuru, three full days in the Masai Mara, a round of golf or a lakeside afternoon at Naivasha, and the elephant herds of Amboseli walking beneath Kilimanjaro. Eleven days, ten nights, six properties, entirely by road.

This is not a rushed circuit. Every stop gets enough time to actually work: two nights in Samburu, a full night at Ol Pejeta with a rhino encounter, a night at Lake Nakuru, three full nights in the Masai Mara, a night at Naivasha to decompress, and two nights at Amboseli to close with Kilimanjaro. The road transfers are long on a couple of days. We plan them that way on purpose, with scenic stops built in, rather than compress six ecosystems into a shorter trip that leaves you seeing everything through a car window.

Key Highlights:

  • Samburu Special Five: Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich and gerenuk on the Ewaso Nyiro River
  • Northern white rhino encounter at Ol Pejeta Conservancy, sanctuary of the last two female northern white rhinos on earth
  • Flamingo-lined shores and black and white rhino at Lake Nakuru National Park
  • Three full nights and two full days of Big Five game drives in the Masai Mara National Reserve
  • Golf, birdlife and Rift Valley views at the Great Rift Valley Lodge & Golf Resort, Naivasha
  • Elephant herds beneath the snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro at Amboseli National Park
  • Six distinct Kenyan ecosystems covered in a single overland journey
  • Private 4×4 Land Cruiser and dedicated driver-guide for the full eleven days

Practical Information:

Physical Requirements

This is an easy safari with long travel days. Game drives take place seated in a private 4×4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, typically for two to five hours per session. The road transfers between destinations range from two to six hours, with rest and photo stops built into the longer legs. No technical terrain or strenuous activity is involved. Guests with mobility concerns should contact us before booking to discuss the vehicle configuration and daily driving distances.

Best Time to Visit

June through October and January through March offer the best dry-season game viewing across all six destinations on this route. July to October is peak season for the Masai Mara, coinciding with the Great Wildebeest Migration Mara River crossings in August and September. Ol Pejeta and Samburu hold resident wildlife year-round and are excellent outside the Mara’s peak window. Lake Nakuru’s flamingo populations fluctuate with water levels and salinity but the park’s rhino sanctuary and predator sightings are consistent year-round. Amboseli’s elephant herds and Kilimanjaro views are best in the dry months, when skies are clearer and animals concentrate around the park’s permanent swamps.

Getting There

This itinerary is entirely road-based. Day 1 covers the long drive from Nairobi north to Samburu via Nanyuki and Isiolo, approximately 345 kilometres and five to six hours. Subsequent transfers are shorter: Samburu to Ol Pejeta is roughly three hours, Ol Pejeta to Nakuru around two and a half hours, Nakuru to the Masai Mara approximately four to five hours, the Mara to Naivasha around four to five hours, and Naivasha to Amboseli the longest single leg of the return journey at five to six hours via Nairobi’s southern bypass. All transfers are in the same private 4×4 vehicle with the same driver-guide throughout, so there is no repacking or handover between legs.

Day1

Nairobi to Samburu National Reserve

🍽 Lunch · Dinner

Depart Nairobi early for the drive north through Nanyuki, past the equator crossing and the foothills of Mount Kenya, then on through Isiolo into the semi-arid Samburu landscape. The road covers approximately 345 kilometres and takes five to six hours with stops. Arrive at Samburu Intrepids in time for lunch on the riverside deck overlooking the Ewaso Nyiro River, where elephants regularly drink within view of the dining area. The camp’s 28 tents sit on raised decks along the riverbank beneath doum palms. In the late afternoon, head out on your first game drive into Samburu National Reserve, tracking the Samburu Special Five: Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich and gerenuk, species found almost nowhere else in Kenya. Return to camp for sundowners on the deck and dinner riverside.

🍽 Lunch · Dinner ✦ Mount Kenya foothills and equator crossing✦ Ewaso Nyiro riverside arrival✦ First Samburu Special 5 game drive✦ Sundowners on the river deck
Day2

Full-Day Samburu National Reserve Game Drive

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner

A full day dedicated to Samburu National Reserve and, time permitting, the neighbouring Buffalo Springs National Reserve across the river. Morning and afternoon game drives cover the riverine forest and open scrubland where the Special Five concentrate, alongside healthy populations of elephant, lion, leopard and cheetah. The Ewaso Nyiro River is the lifeline of this ecosystem, and much of the wildlife activity centres on its banks. Guides here are known for their tracking skill in terrain that is markedly different from Kenya’s southern savannahs. An optional guided walk or visit to a nearby Samburu village can be arranged to learn about the pastoralist culture of the region.

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner ✦ Full-day Samburu Special 5 tracking✦ Buffalo Springs option✦ Predator sightings along the Ewaso Nyiro✦ Optional Samburu cultural visit
Day3

Samburu to Ol Pejeta Conservancy

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner

An early game drive before breakfast, then depart Samburu for the drive south to Ol Pejeta Conservancy, approximately three hours through Isiolo and Nanyuki with Mount Kenya visible for much of the route. Arrive at Sweetwaters Serena Camp, set around a waterhole in the 110,000-acre conservancy, in time for lunch. Ol Pejeta holds the highest wildlife-to-area ratio of any protected area in Kenya and is one of the few places in the country where all Big Five species are reliably found together. The afternoon game drive focuses on the conservancy’s rhino sanctuary, home to the last two northern white rhinos left on the planet, Najin and Fatu, alongside the largest black rhino population in East Africa. Ol Pejeta’s private status also permits night game drives, an option worth adding for a chance at nocturnal species rarely seen in the national parks.

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner ✦ Mount Kenya views on the transfer✦ Ol Pejeta Big Five game drive✦ Northern white rhino sanctuary visit✦ Optional night game drive
Day4

Ol Pejeta to Lake Nakuru National Park

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner

A morning visit the conservancy’s chimpanzee sanctuary, the only one of its kind in Kenya, before departing south toward Lake Nakuru. The drive takes approximately two and a half hours through the agricultural highlands of Central Kenya. Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge sits on a plateau along Lion Hill inside Lake Nakuru National Park itself, one of only two lodges positioned within the park boundary, giving direct access to game drives without a gate transfer. The afternoon drive covers the lake shore and its flamingo populations, the park’s black and white rhino sanctuary, and the euphorbia forest that gives Nakuru its distinctive landscape. Leopard sightings are unusually reliable here, with cats regularly spotted resting in trees during daylight hours.

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner ✦ Ol Pejeta chimpanzee sanctuary✦ Lake Nakuru flamingo shoreline✦ Rhino sanctuary and daytime leopard sightings
Day5

Lake Nakuru to the Masai Mara National Reserve

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner

An early drive through Lake Nakuru National Park before breakfast, then depart for the Masai Mara. The route runs south through the Mau Escarpment and across the Rift Valley floor, approximately four to five hours depending on road conditions. Arrive at Zebra Plains Valley Camp, positioned in a private conservancy bordering the Masai Mara National Reserve, in time for lunch. The camp’s setting in an open valley puts you directly in the path of resident wildlife, with zebra, giraffe and antelope regularly visible from the tents. Settle in with an afternoon game drive into the surrounding conservancy before dinner and a campfire evening.

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner ✦ Mau Escarpment and Rift Valley floor transfer✦ First Mara conservancy game drive✦ Campfire evening
Day6

Full-Day Masai Mara National Reserve Game Drive

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner

A full day inside the Masai Mara National Reserve, entering through the nearest gate for a complete circuit of the reserve’s plains and river systems. Picnic lunch is taken in the bush. The Masai Mara covers 1,510 square kilometres and produces different sightings on every drive, from lion prides resting in riverine shade to cheetah hunting on the open grassland. Guides communicate by radio across vehicles throughout the day, which is what produces consistent Big Five encounters across a multi-day stay rather than relying on a single sighting. Between July and October, the afternoon can be positioned at the Mara River crossing sites to watch for the Great Wildebeest Migration.

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner ✦ Full-day Big 5 game drive, ✦ Mara River positioning✦ Wildebeest migration crossings (July to October)
Day7

Masai Mara Conservancies and Talek Corridor

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner

The second full game drive day pushes into new terrain: the private conservancies bordering Zebra Plains Valley Camp and the Talek River corridor on the reserve’s eastern edge. These conservancies operate under stricter vehicle limits than the national reserve, and permit activities such as walking safaris and night drives that are not allowed inside the Masai Mara itself. Expect large elephant herds, dense buffalo concentrations and excellent predator density where multiple prides and coalitions overlap. An optional Maasai village visit or hot air balloon safari at dawn can be added on this day; both are best booked at the planning stage.

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner ✦ Private conservancy game drives✦ Talek River corridor✦ Optional Maasai village visit or hot air balloon safari.
Day8

Masai Mara to Lake Naivasha

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner

After breakfast, check out and departure for Lake Naivasha, approximately four to five hours back across the Rift Valley floor. The Great Rift Valley Lodge & Golf Resort sits at around 7,000 feet on the Eburru Escarpment above Lake Naivasha, with panoramic views stretching to Mount Longonot’s volcanic crater and the Aberdare Mountains. This is a deliberate change of pace after five nights of game drives: the afternoon is left open for a round on the resort’s 18-hole championship golf course, a boat trip on Lake Naivasha, a visit to Hell’s Gate National Park for walking and cycling among its gorges, or simply time by the pool with the Rift Valley laid out below.

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner ✦ Rift Valley floor transfer✦ Panoramic Eburru Escarpment views✦ Optional golf, Hell’s Gate visit or Lake Naivasha boat trip
Day9

Lake Naivasha to Amboseli National Park

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner

The longest transfer of the itinerary: from Naivasha south past Nairobi and on toward the Tanzanian border region, approximately five to six hours. The reward on arrival is immediate. Ol Tukai Lodge sits inside Amboseli National Park beneath Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, with elephant herds visible from the lodge grounds on most afternoons. Amboseli holds one of the largest and best-studied free-ranging elephant populations on the continent, with several resident bulls carrying exceptionally long tusks. Settle in over lunch, then head out on an afternoon game drive across the park’s swamp-fed plains, with Kilimanjaro as a backdrop for photography through the late afternoon light.

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner ✦ Arrival beneath Mount Kilimanjaro✦ First Amboseli elephant-focused game drive✦ Late-afternoon photography light
Day10

Full-Day Amboseli National Park Game Drive

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner

A full day exploring Amboseli’s five distinct ecosystems: swamp, savannah, woodland, the dried bed of the former Lake Amboseli, and the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro itself. Morning game drives focus on the permanent swamps, where elephant herds gather to drink and bathe against clear early-morning views of the mountain before cloud typically builds by mid-morning. Amboseli also holds strong populations of lion, cheetah, buffalo and over 400 recorded bird species. An optional visit to a Maasai community adjacent to the park can be arranged for the afternoon, or guests can simply extend the game drive across the park’s open plains.

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner ✦ Clear morning views of Snowcapped Mount Kilimanjaro✦ Elephant swamp activity✦ Optional Maasai community visit
Day11

Return Drive to Nairobi

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch

After breakfast and check-out, depart for the drive back to Nairobi, approximately four hours via the Namanga or Emali route depending on conditions. The eleven-day journey closes back where it began, having covered Kenya’s northern deserts, its central rhino conservancies, the Rift Valley lakes, the Masai Mara and the foot of Kilimanjaro entirely by road. We arrange onward airport transfers according to your flight time.

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch ✦ Return drive to Nairobi✦ Airport transfer

An amazing week on safari with Mike Jun 2026 • We have had just the best week with our amazing guide Mike, we have seen things that no picture or video will ever show. Masai Mara was just phenomenal and seeing the Elephants play in the water at Amboseli reserve was a dream come true. Mike had great knowledge of all the parks and the best places to spot the animals, from watching an amazing sun set with the Elephants, to having a picnic with amazing views !! A truly life changing experience, we have made some amazing memories!!!

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

What should I pack for the safari?

Pack light, neutral-colored clothing (khaki, green, brown), comfortable closed-toe shoes, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars, and a camera with extra batteries. Evenings can be cool, so bring a light jacket.

Is this itinerary all by road, or is flying an option?

This itinerary is designed entirely by road, using a single private 4x4 vehicle and driver-guide for all eleven days. This keeps costs lower than a fly-in safari and means no repacking or luggage handling between destinations. Guests who prefer to reduce driving time can ask us about a hybrid version with a flight between Nakuru or Nairobi and the Masai Mara, or between the Mara and Amboseli.

What is the difference between Ol Pejeta Conservancy and the other parks on this route?

Ol Pejeta is a private, non-profit conservancy rather than a government national park or reserve, which allows activities not permitted elsewhere on this itinerary, including night game drives and lion tracking with the conservancy’s research team. It holds the highest wildlife-to-area ratio of any protected area in Kenya and is the only place in the country to see the two remaining northern white rhinos.

When can we see the wildebeest migration on this route?

The Great Wildebeest Migration Mara River crossings occur between July and October, with the heaviest activity in August and September, coinciding with the three nights this itinerary spends at Zebra Plains Valley Camp in the Masai Mara. Outside this window, all six parks on the route hold strong resident wildlife populations year-round.

Why include a night at Naivasha in the middle of a wildlife-focused itinerary?

The night at the Great Rift Valley Lodge & Golf Resort is a deliberate pause between the Masai Mara and the long transfer to Amboseli. It breaks up two long driving days, and the lodge’s elevated position on the Eburru Escarpment offers golf, a Lake Naivasha boat trip or a visit to Hell’s Gate National Park as an alternative to another game drive. Guests who prefer to skip it can ask us to adjust the route to drive the Mara-to-Amboseli leg directly.

Is Amboseli a good choice for photographing Mount Kilimanjaro?

Yes, and it is one of the best in Africa for it. Kilimanjaro sits just across the Tanzanian border and is usually clearest in the early morning before cloud builds through the day, which is why this itinerary schedules game drives at dawn during the two nights at Ol Tukai Lodge. Amboseli’s elephant herds, often photographed with the mountain as a backdrop, are one of the most recognisable images in African safari photography.

How much driving is involved on this itinerary?

This is a road-based itinerary with several long transfer days: Nairobi to Samburu (five to six hours), the Mara to Naivasha (four to five hours), and Naivasha to Amboseli (five to six hours) are the longest legs. We build rest stops and scenic viewpoints into each transfer, and the private vehicle means the group can stop whenever needed.
