Overview

About this safari

A Kenya family safari across six ecosystems: Samburu, Ol Pejeta, Nakuru, the Masai Mara, Naivasha and Amboseli.

This six-destination Kenya road circuit is our classic grand family safari, built around full-service, well-established lodges with generous public spaces, reliable buffet dining and a consistent standard from property to property. For travellers who want scale, space and predictability across a long multi-destination trip rather than a mix of boutique camps, this is the version built for that.

Eleven days, ten nights, six destinations, entirely by road: two nights at Samburu Intrepids Camp on the river banks of Ewaso Ngiro inside Samburu National Reserve, a night at Sweetwaters Serena Camp in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy for the rhino sanctuary, a night at Lake Nakuru Sopa Lodge on the park’s western escarpment, three nights in the Masai Mara at Mara Elatia Camp, a night at Great Rift Valley Lodge & Golf Resort on the slopes of the Great Rift Valley, and two nights at Praro Amboseli Camp in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Key Highlights:

  • Samburu Special Five: Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich and gerenuk viewed from a lodge built above a resident waterhole
  • Northern white rhino encounter at Ol Pejeta Conservancy, sanctuary of the last two female northern white rhinos on earth
  • Escarpment views over the flamingo-lined shores and rhino sanctuary of Lake Nakuru National Park
  • Three full nights and two full days of Big Five game drives in the Masai Mara National Reserve
  • Lake Naivasha shoreline lodge with resident giraffe, waterbuck and nightly grazing hippos
  • Elephant herds beneath the snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro at Amboseli Sopa Lodge
  • Consistent full-service lodge standard across five of six properties on the Sopa Lodges collection
  • Private 4×4 Land Cruiser and dedicated driver-guide for the full eleven days

Practical Information:

Physical Requirements

This is an easy safari with long travel days. Game drives take place seated in a private 4×4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, typically for two to five hours per session. The road transfers between destinations range from two to six hours, with rest and photo stops built into the longer legs. No technical terrain or strenuous activity is involved. Guests with mobility concerns should contact us before booking; Samburu Sopa Lodge, Lake Nakuru Sopa Lodge and Amboseli Sopa Lodge each have wheelchair-accessible rooms near reception.

Best Time to Visit

June through October and January through March offer the best dry-season game viewing across all six destinations on this route. July to October is peak season for the Masai Mara, coinciding with the Great Wildebeest Migration Mara River crossings in August and September. Ol Pejeta and Samburu hold resident wildlife year-round and are excellent outside the Mara’s peak window. Lake Nakuru’s flamingo populations fluctuate with water levels and salinity but the park’s rhino sanctuary and predator sightings are consistent year-round. Amboseli’s elephant herds and Kilimanjaro views are best in the dry months, when skies are clearer and animals concentrate around the park’s permanent swamps.

Getting There

This itinerary is entirely road-based. Day 1 covers the long drive from Nairobi north to Samburu, approximately 325 kilometres via Nanyuki and Isiolo, five to six hours including the equator crossing. Subsequent transfers are shorter: Samburu to Ol Pejeta is roughly three hours, Ol Pejeta to Nakuru around two and a half hours, Nakuru to the Masai Mara approximately four to five hours, the Mara to Naivasha around four to five hours, and Naivasha to Amboseli the longest single leg of the return journey at five to six hours via Nairobi’s southern bypass. All transfers are in the same private 4×4 vehicle with the same driver-guide throughout.

Stop1

Nairobi to Samburu National Reserve

Depart Nairobi early for the drive north through Nanyuki, crossing the equator into the northern hemisphere, then on through Isiolo into the Samburu landscape. The road covers approximately 325 kilometres and takes five to six hours with stops. Samburu Intrepids is a lush oasis on the banks of the great Uaso Nyiro River in Samburu Game Reserve. The tented luxury camp is a delight to be in – deliciously cooled by the river breeze and the forest. The camp sits on raised decks overlooking the brown river where the elephants sometimes make an appearance or the crocodiles come out to lounge by the river’s banks.

Arrive in time for lunch, then head out in the late afternoon on your first game drive, tracking the Samburu Special Five: Grevy’s Zebra, Reticulated Giraffe, Beisa Oryx, Somali Ostrich and Gerenuk. Return for sundowners with views over the shrubland and hills beyond.

Stop2

Full-Day Samburu National Reserve Game Drive

A full day dedicated to Samburu National Reserve and, time permitting, the neighbouring Buffalo Springs National Reserve across the Ewaso Nyiro River. Morning and afternoon game drives cover the riverine forest and open scrubland where the Special Five concentrate, alongside healthy populations of elephant, lion, leopard and cheetah. Back at the camp, newly refurbished tents with a private view over the wildlife-rich banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River. The best kids clubs in the region for cultural and wildlife edutainment. Clear Equatorial night skies for astronomy.

Stop3

Samburu to Ol Pejeta Conservancy

An early game drive before breakfast, then depart Samburu for the drive south to Ol Pejeta Conservancy, approximately three hours through Isiolo and Nanyuki with Mount Kenya visible for much of the route. Arrive at Sweetwaters Serena Tented Camp, set around a waterhole in the 110,000-acre conservancy, in time for lunch. Ol Pejeta holds the highest wildlife-to-area ratio of any protected area in Kenya and is one of the few places in the country where all Big Five species are reliably found together. The afternoon game drive focuses on the conservancy’s rhino sanctuary, home to the last two northern white rhinos left on the planet, Najin and Fatu, alongside the largest black rhino population in East Africa. An optional night game drive can be added, a rare option given the conservancy’s private status.

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner 🏕 Sweetwaters Serena Camp | Luxury Safari Camp in Ol Pejeta Kenya ✦ Mount Kenya views on the transfer✦ Ol Pejeta Big 5 game drive✦ Northern white rhino sanctuary visit✦ Optional night game drive.
Stop4

Ol Pejeta to Lake Nakuru National Park

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner 🏕 Lake Nakuru Sopa Lodge

A final morning game drive at Ol Pejeta, with time to visit the conservancy’s chimpanzee sanctuary, before departing south toward Lake Nakuru, approximately two and a half hours through the Central Kenya highlands. Lake Nakuru Sopa Lodge sits high on the western escarpment hills of the park, with sweeping terrace views over the lake basin, woodlands and grasslands below. This elevated position is more than scenic, giving a working sense of how the park’s wetland, woodland and savannah habitats connect. The afternoon drive covers the lake shore and its flamingo populations, the park’s black and white rhino sanctuary, and reliable daytime leopard sightings.

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner 🏕 Lake Nakuru Sopa Lodge ✦ Ol Pejeta chimpanzee sanctuary✦ Transfer through the Central Kenya highlands, escarpment views over Lake Nakuru✦ Rhino sanctuary and daytime leopard sightings
Stop5

Lake Nakuru to the Masai Mara National Reserve

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner 🏕 Mara Elatia Camp |Luxury Safari Camp in Maasai Mara, Kenya

An early drive through Lake Nakuru National Park before breakfast, then depart for the Masai Mara. The route runs south through the Mau Escarpment and across the Rift Valley floor, approximately four to five hours depending on road conditions. Arrive at Zebra Plains Valley Camp, positioned in a private conservancy bordering the Masai Mara National Reserve, in time for lunch. The camp’s setting in an open valley puts you directly in the path of resident wildlife, with zebra, giraffe and antelope regularly visible from the tents. Settle in with an afternoon game drive into the surrounding conservancy before dinner and a campfire evening.

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner 🏕 Mara Elatia Camp |Luxury Safari Camp in Maasai Mara, Kenya ✦ Mau Escarpment and Rift Valley floor transfer✦ First Mara conservancy game drive✦ Campfire evening
Stop6

Full-Day Masai Mara National Reserve Game Drive

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner 🏕 Mara Elatia Camp |Luxury Safari Camp in Maasai Mara, Kenya

A full day inside the Masai Mara National Reserve, entering through the nearest gate for a complete circuit of the reserve’s plains and river systems. Picnic lunch is taken in the bush. The Masai Mara covers 1,510 square kilometres and produces different sightings on every drive, from lion prides resting in riverine shade to cheetah hunting on the open grassland. Guides communicate by radio across vehicles throughout the day. Between July and October, the afternoon can be positioned at the Mara River crossing sites to watch for the Great Wildebeest Migration.

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner 🏕 Mara Elatia Camp |Luxury Safari Camp in Maasai Mara, Kenya ✦ Full-day Big 5 game drive✦ Mara River positioning✦ Wildebeest migration crossings (July to October)
Stop7

Masai Mara Conservancies and Talek Corridor

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner 🏕 Mara Elatia Camp |Luxury Safari Camp in Maasai Mara, Kenya

The second full game drive day pushes into the private conservancies bordering Zebra Plains Valley Camp and the Talek River corridor on the reserve’s eastern edge. These conservancies operate under stricter vehicle limits than the national reserve, and permit walking safaris and night drives not allowed inside the Masai Mara itself. Expect large elephant herds, dense buffalo concentrations and excellent predator density. An optional Maasai village visit or hot air balloon safari at dawn can be added on this day; both are best booked at the planning stage.

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner 🏕 Mara Elatia Camp |Luxury Safari Camp in Maasai Mara, Kenya ✦ Private conservancy game drives✦ Talek River corridor✦ Optional Maasai village visit or hot air balloon safari
Stop8

Masai Mara to Lake Naivasha

After breakfast, depart for Lake Naivasha, approximately four to five hours back across the Rift Valley floor. Lake Naivasha Sopa Resort sits on 150 acres of grassland studded with acacia trees directly on the lake shore, home to resident giraffe, waterbuck and both vervet and colobus monkeys, and a nightly stop for hippos leaving the water to graze the lawns after dark. This is a deliberate change of pace after five nights of game drives: the afternoon is open for a Lake Naivasha boat trip past hippo pods and birdlife, a guided walk on Crescent Island among free-roaming zebra and giraffe, or simply time by the pool with the lake in view.

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner 🏕 Great Rift Valley Lodge & Golf Resort | Luxury Naivasha Lodge Kenya ✦ Rift Valley floor transfer✦ Lakeshore arrival with resident wildlife✦ Optional Lake Naivasha boat trip or Crescent Island walk
Stop9

Lake Naivasha to Amboseli National Park

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner 🏕 Praro Amboseli Camp

The longest transfer of the itinerary: from Naivasha south past Nairobi and on toward the Tanzanian border region, approximately five to six hours. Amboseli Sopa Lodge sits on 200 acres of private land in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, roughly twenty minutes from the park’s Kimana Gate, with views of the snow-capped peak from the lodge grounds and gardens that host monkeys, gazelles and the occasional passing leopard. Settle in over lunch, then head into Amboseli National Park for an afternoon game drive across the swamp-fed plains, with Kilimanjaro as a backdrop for photography through the late afternoon light.

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner 🏕 Praro Amboseli Camp ✦ Arrival in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro✦ First Amboseli elephant-focused game drive
Stop10

Full-Day Amboseli National Park Game Drive

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner 🏕 Praro Amboseli Camp

A full day exploring Amboseli’s five distinct ecosystems: swamp, savannah, woodland, the dried bed of the former Lake Amboseli, and the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro itself. Morning game drives focus on the permanent swamps, where elephant herds gather to drink and bathe against clear early-morning views of the mountain before cloud typically builds by mid-morning. Amboseli also holds strong populations of lion, cheetah, buffalo and over 400 recorded bird species. An optional Maasai village visit can be arranged for the afternoon, a regular feature at Amboseli Sopa Lodge given its location among Maasai group ranches.

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner 🏕 Praro Amboseli Camp ✦ Full-day Amboseli game drive✦ Clear morning views of Kilimanjaro✦ Elephant swamp activity✦ Optional Maasai village visit
Stop11

Return Drive to Nairobi

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch

After breakfast and check-out, depart for the drive back to Nairobi. The eleven-day journey closes back where it began, having covered Kenya’s northern deserts, its central rhino conservancies, the Rift Valley lakes, the Masai Mara and the foot of Kilimanjaro entirely by road. We arrange onward airport transfers according to your flight time.

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch ✦ Return drive to Nairobi✦ Airport transfer✦ Lunch at The Carnivore Restaurant

For us this was a once in a lifetime family experience, and we are so glad we chose AAA. We had an Amazing Trip. After receiving six different quotes, we decided on Hellen. Her responsiveness and willingness to get the details right, to allow for customization, and to clearly be a customer advocate quickly set her apart. But it was when we finally arrived that her team's attentiveness, authenticity, friendliness, and attention to detail just blew us away. Nico, our guide, truly made the trip special. His clear expertise and skill were just perfect, with entertaining explanations and superb depth of knowledge and delivery of information. But it was the little details planned by Hellen, truly bespoke experiences (unique, personalized and special sunset celebration, breakfast, souvenirs, etc. etc.) that made this a dream adventure. Others might deliver lodges and safaris at good enough prices, but the added value of these detailed experiences is priceless. After Kenya, we visited SA on similar safari. While good, they could not compare to Afrikan Adventures. We feel lucky to have chosen the AAA team and can't thank them enough!

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Why is this considered one of Kenya's best family safari itineraries?

This 11-day journey has been designed specifically for families seeking a complete Kenyan safari experience. Rather than focusing on one or two parks, it explores six distinct ecosystems—Samburu, Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Lake Nakuru, Masai Mara, Lake Naivasha, and Amboseli—allowing children and adults to experience a remarkable variety of wildlife, landscapes, and conservation stories while staying in comfortable, family-friendly lodges throughout

Why does the safari begin in Samburu National Reserve?

Samburu offers a completely different safari experience from southern Kenya. It is home to the famous Samburu Special Five—Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, and gerenuk—species rarely seen elsewhere in Kenya. Beginning your safari here introduces your family to wildlife that many visitors never encounter.

Why is Ol Pejeta Conservancy included in this itinerary?

Ol Pejeta is one of Africa's leading wildlife conservancies and home to the world's last two remaining northern white rhinos. Families also have the opportunity to visit the chimpanzee sanctuary, making this stop one of the most educational and conservation-focused experiences of the entire safari.

Why spend three nights in the Masai Mara?

The Masai Mara is Kenya's most celebrated safari destination, and three nights allow enough time for multiple game drives without feeling rushed. With two full days in the reserve, your family has excellent opportunities to search for the Big Five, witness predator action, and, between July and October, experience the Great Wildebeest Migration.

Why stay at Lake Naivasha before heading to Amboseli?

Lake Naivasha provides a relaxing break between intensive game viewing destinations. Families can enjoy optional boat safaris among hippos, walk alongside giraffes and zebras on Crescent Island, or simply unwind at the lakeside resort before continuing south to Amboseli.

Why does the itinerary finish in Amboseli National Park?

Amboseli offers a spectacular finale with large elephant herds roaming beneath Mount Kilimanjaro. The park's open plains, permanent swamps, and iconic scenery create some of Kenya's most photographed safari moments, providing a memorable conclusion to the journey.

Is this safari suitable for families with young children?

Yes. This private safari is ideal for families because your guide can adjust the pace of game drives, schedule comfort stops during longer transfers, and tailor each day to your family's interests. The selected lodges provide spacious grounds, family-friendly facilities, and comfortable accommodation throughout the trip.

How much driving is involved?

As this is a road safari covering six destinations, there are several longer travel days, including Nairobi to Samburu, Masai Mara to Lake Naivasha, and Lake Naivasha to Amboseli. These journeys are broken up with scenic stops, rest breaks, and opportunities for sightseeing, while your private 4×4 Land Cruiser allows complete flexibility throughout the trip.

What wildlife will we see during this safari?

Each destination offers different wildlife experiences. Expect to see: The Samburu Special Five in Samburu. Northern white rhinos, black rhinos, and chimpanzees at Ol Pejeta. Rhinos, flamingos, Rothschild's giraffes, and tree-climbing lions around Lake Nakuru. The Big Five and the Great Migration (seasonal) in the Masai Mara. Hippos and abundant birdlife at Lake Naivasha. Large elephant herds with Mount Kilimanjaro as a backdrop in Amboseli. This diversity makes the itinerary one of Kenya's most comprehensive wildlife circuits.

What optional activities can we add?

To personalise your safari, you can include: Hot air balloon safari over the Masai Mara Chimpanzee sanctuary visit at Ol Pejeta Samburu Village visit Camel ride on Ewaso Ngiro river in Samburu Cultural Astronomy with Samburu elders Night game drives where available(Olpejeta and Masai Mara) These experiences can be arranged before travel or while planning your itinerary.

Is this a private or shared safari?

This is a fully private safari. Your family enjoys exclusive use of a 4×4 safari Land Cruiser and a dedicated professional and experienced driver-guide throughout the journey, allowing complete flexibility for game drives, photography stops, meal breaks, and travel at your own pace

When is the best time to book this itinerary?

The safari operates year-round, but each season offers unique highlights: July to October: Great Wildebeest Migration in the Masai Mara and excellent wildlife viewing. January to March: Warm, dry weather with exceptional game viewing and fewer visitors. April to June & November to December: Lush landscapes, excellent birdwatching, and attractive accommodation rates.

What is included in this safari package?

Your safari includes: Private 4×4 Land Cruiser with pop-up roof Professional English-speaking driver-guide 10 nights of full-board accommodation All national park and conservancy entrance fees All scheduled game drives Bottled drinking water during game drives Airport transfers according to the itinerary International flights, travel insurance, gratuities, and optional activities are excluded.

Why book this safari with Afrikan Accent Adventures?

Unlike standard packaged tours, this itinerary is operated by a locally owned Kenyan destination management company with in-depth knowledge of every destination on the route. From the rare wildlife of Samburu to the elephants of Amboseli, every detail has been carefully planned to deliver a seamless family adventure with expert guides, handpicked accommodations, and personalized service from your first enquiry to your departure.
