Practical Information

Physical Requirements

This is an easy-to-moderate safari. Game drives and road transfers take place seated in a shared 4×4 safari vehicle, capped at 6 guests. The optional Crescent Island walking safari and Hell’s Gate cycling and gorge walk involve light-to-moderate physical activity on foot or bicycle and are not compulsory; guests may opt for a relaxed boat ride and lakeside time instead. Road transfers total around ten to eleven hours across the full itinerary, spread over four separate drives, with rest stops built in.

Best Time to Visit

July through October is peak season for the Great Wildebeest Migration in the Masai Mara, with the heaviest Mara River crossing activity in August and September. Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha offer strong resident wildlife, birdlife and lake activities year-round, so those legs of the itinerary work equally well in any season.

Getting There

This itinerary is entirely road-based. The drive from Nairobi to the Siana Conservancy covers approximately 225 to 250 kilometres, around four to five hours, via Narok. The onward drive from the Mara to Lake Nakuru covers approximately 210 to 230 kilometres, around four to five hours. The drive from Nakuru to Lake Naivasha covers approximately 75 to 90 kilometres, around one and a half hours. The return drive from Naivasha to Nairobi covers approximately 90 kilometres, around two hours. The same shared vehicle and driver-guide handle every leg.

An amazing week on safari with Mike We have had just the best week with our amazing guide Mike, we have seen things that no picture or video will ever show. Masai Mara was just phenomenal and seeing the Elephants play in the water at Amboseli reserve was a dream come true. Mike had great knowledge of all the parks and the best places to spot the animals, from watching an amazing sun set with the Elephants, to having a picnic with amazing views !! A truly life changing experience, we have made some amazing memories!!!

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

What should I pack for the safari?

Pack light, neutral-colored clothing (khaki, green, brown), comfortable closed-toe shoes, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars, and a camera with extra batteries. Evenings can be cool, so bring a light jacket.

What does "book-a-seat" mean on this group safari?

You reserve an individual seat rather than an entire vehicle. The group is capped at 6 guests per vehicle, so you're guaranteed a window seat and unobstructed game viewing across all four days.

Why add Lake Nakuru to a Masai Mara itinerary?

Nakuru adds a genuinely different wildlife experience in one extra night: a dedicated rhino sanctuary, tree-climbing lions and some of Kenya's best lakeshore birdwatching, all on the direct return route to Nairobi with no detour.

When can we see the wildebeest migration on this itinerary?

The Great Wildebeest Migration Mara River crossings occur between July and October, with the heaviest activity in August and September, covered on Day 2 of this itinerary.

Can this be booked as a private safari instead?

Yes. This exact itinerary can also run privately on any date, with your own dedicated vehicle and driver-guide. Ask us for private rates.

How much driving is involved across the five days?

Three separate road legs totaling around eight to nine hours: Nairobi to the Mara, the Mara to Nakuru, Nakuru to Naivasha and Naivasha back to Nairobi, each with rest stops built in.

Is single accommodation available for solo travellers?

Yes, for a single supplement at both properties. Solo travelers can also choose to share a room with another same-gender traveler on the same departure to avoid the supplement, subject to availability.
