A flying safari changes the shape of a Masai Mara trip before it even begins. Instead of the five-to-six-hour road transfer from Nairobi, most of it on rough murram once you leave the tarmac, you take a scheduled light aircraft from Wilson Airport and are on the ground inside the ecosystem in well under an hour, climbing over the Great Rift Valley and the Loita Hills with the plains opening up beneath you. What that buys you is time: an extra half-day of game viewing on arrival, and legs that aren’t stiff from a cross-country drive when you step off the plane and straight into your first game drive.

Where you land matters just as much as how. But the conservancy can’t do everything. The dramatic Mara River crossings that define the Great Migration on television happen at fixed points — Mara Serena, Musiara Marsh, the Mara Triangle — that sit inside the Masai Mara National Reserve itself, to the south of the conservancy. So this itinerary spends one full day crossing into the reserve, timed for the classic sightings, while the remaining days stay inside Mara North’s quieter, less-driven terrain. Getting There

This is a flying safari throughout. Scheduled light aircraft connect Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to the Mara North airstrip in around 45 minutes, with a further 10-minute road transfer to Royal Mara Safari Lodge. The return flight on Day 5 follows the same route, landing back at Wilson Airport in time for a farewell lunch and an evening onward flight.

Best Time to Visit

Mara North Conservancy holds strong resident wildlife year-round, so this itinerary works in any season. The dry season from July to October brings the wider Great Migration through the ecosystem, with the most dramatic river crossings concentrated in the national reserve on Day 3. Between December and May, a local migration of wildebeest moves in from the Loita Hills directly into the conservancy itself, adding drama much closer to the lodge.

Physical Requirements

An easy-to-moderate itinerary suited to most fitness levels. Game drives are conducted in a 4×4 safari vehicle with no more than four guests aboard. The walking safari is gentle in pace, led throughout by an armed ranger, and can be shortened or skipped for guests who prefer to stay in the vehicle.
