Covering approximately 165 square kilometres (64 square miles), Samburu National Reserve lies within Kenya’s semi-arid northern region in Samburu County. The reserve forms part of the greater Samburu ecosystem together with Buffalo Springs National Reserve and Shaba National Reserve.

Samburu National Reserve is accessible by road from Nairobi in approximately six hours or by daily scheduled flights from Wilson Airport to Samburu Oryx Airstrip in approximately one hour.

Samburu is internationally famous for the "Samburu Special Five" — Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, gerenuk and Beisa oryx species rarely found in southern Kenya. The reserve is also renowned for exceptional leopard sightings, large elephant herds and authentic Samburu cultural experiences.
Samburu is home to four of the Big Five: lions, leopards, buffaloes and elephants. Rhinos are not found within the reserve itself. However, visitors often combine Samburu with nearby conservancies such as Ol Pejeta Conservancy for a complete Big Five safari experience.
Visitors regularly encounter elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, crocodiles, hippos, giraffes, zebras, impalas, waterbucks and the Samburu Special Five. The reserve supports more than 450 bird species and over 50 mammal species, making it one of northern Kenya's richest wildlife destinations.
A stay of two to three nights is ideal for most visitors. This allows enough time for multiple game drives, cultural visits, photography sessions and relaxation at the lodge. Wildlife photographers and birdwatchers often prefer four nights or longer to maximise sightings and experiences.
The best wildlife viewing occurs during the dry seasons from June to October and December to February. During these months animals congregate around the Ewaso Nyiro River, making sightings easier and more predictable. The green seasons provide excellent birdwatching opportunities and beautiful scenery.

Samburu National Reserve is approximately 345 kilometres north of Nairobi. The drive takes between 5.5 and 6.5 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. Scheduled flights from Nairobi reduce travel time to approximately one hour.
Night game drives are generally not permitted inside Samburu National Reserve itself but are available in some neighbouring private conservancies and lodges outside the reserve boundaries, offering opportunities to spot nocturnal wildlife.
