11-Day Kenya Family Safari Itinerary: How to Make Six Parks Work for Children

A family safari rarely fails on wildlife. It fails on the logistics: the suitcase, the six-hour drive, the camp with no pool at 3pm. Here is how to plan an 11-day Kenya family safari that works for children.

11-Day Kenya Family Safari Itinerary: How to Make Six Parks Work for Children

A male lion, lioness, and cub sitting together in the tall grass during a game drive, the ultimate wildlife highlight of a Kenya family safari itinerary.

Wilson Airport. 5:40am. A counter agent is shaking her head at a hard-shell suitcase the size of a small fridge. Light aircraft flying to the Masai Mara take soft bags only, 15 kg per person including hand luggage. This family of four had planned every game drive of their Kenya family safari. Nobody had planned the bag.

So we watched the repacking happen on the departure lounge floor. Two soft duffels. A mountain of jackets. A seven-year-old asleep on top of it. Nobody shouted and the plane left on time. The game drives that followed were superb, yet the first thing the parents asked about on the Mara airstrip was still the luggage.

That is the pattern we see every season. A family safari rarely fails on wildlife because Kenya has plenty. It fails on the logistics around the wildlife: the suitcase, the six-hour drive on day one, the camp with no pool at 3pm, the week that was planned for adults and handed to children.

We are Afrikan Accent Adventures, a Nairobi-based safari operator. We plan for those moments before a family lands. Our live 11 Days Kenya Family Safari is a road circuit across six parks from Samburu to Amboseli. It has no suitcase problem. It has a driving problem: between 27.5 and 31.5 hours in a Land Cruiser across the ten nights.

That is fine for some families and too much for others. This guide shows how to build a Kenya family safari itinerary around that number: where to keep the live route, where to trim it, what it costs for four and when to add a beach. We would cut a park before we cut a pool.

QUICK ANSWER | What is a good Kenya safari itinerary for a family?
A good Kenya family safari itinerary is our live 11-day road circuit: Samburu, Ol Pejeta, Lake Nakuru, the Masai Mara, Lake Naivasha and Amboseli. Families with younger children should trim it to three bases. A private vehicle and one guide keep routines intact.

What does an 11-day Kenya family safari itinerary look like day by day?

Kenya luxury family safaris

The live 11 Days Kenya Family Safari is our Kenya classic safari circuit: ten nights and six destinations, entirely by road, in a private 4×4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof and one dedicated driver-guide. It runs on guaranteed set departures and as a private safari on any date.

That is ten nights across 11 days. A 12-day Kenya family safari is the same route plus one pre-safari night in Nairobi, which the 11-day price does not include. We add it for most families, and the reason is the first principle below.

We deliberately do not recite the circuit as a diary here. Days shift with arrival times, school holidays and camp availability. The building principles do not. Full day-by-day detail sits on the live itinerary page, and we fine-tune every day around your family when you enquire.

Principle 1: Treat the first day as the hard day

The live circuit opens with one of its two longest road legs, straight after a long-haul flight: about 325 km to Samburu, 5 to 6 hours with stops, crossing the equator near Nanyuki. We do not like that for a jet-lagged six-year-old. Fly in a day early. Use the extra night and the following morning for the Nairobi family day, the same combination as our Nairobi day trip from $295 per person. The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Nairobi Nursery admits the public for one hour a day, 11am to noon, by advance booking only, so book it before anything else. If everyone is flat, drop the park drive and keep the elephants and the Giraffe Centre feeding platform. That is our call.

Principle 2: Spend the early nights where children can be hands-on

Energy is highest at the start, so front-load the activities that need it. Samburu Intrepids Camp sits on raised decks above the Ewaso Nyiro River, and the page lists a kids club, camel rides and clear equatorial skies for astronomy with Samburu elders. The Samburu Special Five (Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich and gerenuk) are easy to spot and hard to forget. Ol Pejeta Conservancy follows with the last two northern white rhinos on earth, Najin and Fatu, the largest black rhino population in East Africa and a chimpanzee sanctuary. Night drives are possible on this private land, and the minimum ages sit in our Kids on Kenya Safari guide.

Principle 3: Use the buffer stops on purpose

Kenya family safari with teenagers

Lake Nakuru National Park is the short day, about two and a half hours from Ol Pejeta. Lake Nakuru Sopa Lodge sits high on the western escarpment with terrace views, and the afternoon covers the rhino sanctuary and regular daytime leopards. Flamingo numbers rise and fall with water levels, so never promise children a pink shoreline. Lake Naivasha is the second buffer. After five nights of game drives it is a deliberate change of pace with a pool afternoon, a boat trip past hippo pods or a guided walk on Crescent Island among zebra and giraffe. Neither stop is the highlight. Both make the highlights enjoyable.

Principle 4: Give the headline park three nights

The Masai Mara covers 1,510 square kilometres and no two drives look alike, which is why it needs three nights and not two. The 4 to 5 hour road in lands a family at Mara Elatia Camp on the Mara Triangle side in time for a first afternoon drive. Then comes one full-day drive in the reserve with a picnic lunch and one day in the private conservancies, which operate under stricter vehicle limits and allow walking safaris and night drives. Between July and October the full day can be positioned for Mara River crossings.

Cut a park before you cut a pool.

Principle 5: Know where the long legs fall

Two legs reach six hours: Nairobi to Samburu and Lake Naivasha to Amboseli, which runs past Nairobi’s southern bypass and is the longest single leg of the return journey. The circuit also puts two long legs back to back, Mara to Naivasha and then Naivasha to Amboseli. The lakeside afternoon at Naivasha softens that. Our standard answer is a private vehicle: the same guide, a breakfast start, a named stop every 90 minutes and a pool at the end of the day. The pacing section below shows the full hours.

Principle 6: Trim before you cut pools

A private safari bends. Our page invites families to change the dates, the camps and the pace. For children under eight we would drop Samburu, Naivasha and Amboseli and keep Ol Pejeta, Lake Nakuru and the Masai Mara. That three-base route cuts long-leg driving to 10.5 to 12.5 hours. It is a tailor-made variant we quote per family, not a set departure. If elephants rank first in your house, we would keep Amboseli and drop Samburu instead.

How long should a family safari be?

how long should a family safari in Kenya be
QUICK ANSWER | How many days do you need for a family safari in Kenya?
Ten to twelve days is the right length for a Kenya family safari with children from six. Our live 11-day circuit covers six parks by road. Younger children do better with three bases and half the driving. Four to six days is enough for the Masai Mara alone.

Every new bed costs children half a day. Packing, a long drive, a new room and a new routine eat the energy that game drives need. That is why we count bases rather than parks. The live circuit has six bases in 11 days, so it suits families whose children enjoy variety and tolerate drive days. A three-base trim of the same length leaves a rest day for every two moving days.

Shorter trips work when the goal is narrow. A first taste of the Mara by air needs three days. A conservancy-style trip needs five. Anything under seven nights should skip the beach. Our live range shows how the lengths compare.

How much does a family safari in Kenya cost?

Kenya family safari cost for four
QUICK ANSWER | How much does a family safari in Kenya cost?
A private Kenya family safari costs from about $3,185 per person on our live 11-day trip. That is $12,740 for four at the adult rate. Shorter Masai Mara trips start near $1,440 per person. Flights, beach nights and tips sit on top.

Kenya family safari packages vary on four things: season, camp tier, private versus shared vehicle and whether you fly. The live 11 Days Kenya Family Safari lists $3,185 per person on the departure window opening 1 November 2026 and $4,115 per person for the 23 December 2026 departure. Private dates are priced on request. Children’s rates depend on age and room set-up, so we quote them per family. The sums below use the adult rate throughout.

Published per-person ratePer personFamily of four at adult rate

5 Days Masai Mara Flying Safari, Mara North Conservancy$4,000$16,000
Nairobi Day Trip$295$1,180

The 11-day price covers a private 4×4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, an English-speaking driver-guide, ten nights full board, all park and conservancy entrance fees, the scheduled game drives, bottled water on drives, airport transfers per the itinerary, taxes and VAT. The page lists a one-hour Lake Naivasha boat ride and a guided Crescent Island walk both as inclusions and as optional extras, so we confirm at quote which sit inside the price.

It excludes international flights, visa fees, travel insurance, tips, optional activities such as balloon flights, night drives, Maasai village visits and the chimpanzee sanctuary fee, drinks beyond lodge inclusions and any Nairobi hotel night before departure. The beach is the line most families underestimate. Ask us to price the flights and the Diani nights on your quote.

If you ever book park access yourself, the Masai Mara adult fee for non-residents is USD 100 per day from January to June 2026 and USD 200 per day from July to December, with the child rate for ages 9 to 17 published at USD 50. A family of two adults and two children therefore pays about $300 a day in the first half of the year and $500 in the second. These figures come from published 2026 schedules and the county can change them, so confirm before you pay.

Budget tips separately. Our baseline for a driver-guide is USD 15 per person per day, so USD 60 a day for a family of four. For arrival rules and costs before you fly, see our Kenya entry requirements guide and our Kenya safari travel insurance guide.

EXPERT NOTE |
Compare family quotes by total, never by nightly rate. The cheapest-looking quote usually leaves out the park fees, the flights or the Nairobi nights. Ask for fees, vehicle, guide, flights and tips as separate lines. Then add them up yourself.

Which parks are best for families?

QUICK ANSWER | Which parks are best for families?
Ol Pejeta Conservancy, the Masai Mara and Amboseli National Park suit families best. Ol Pejeta brings rhinos and chimpanzees within a morning’s drive of Nairobi. The Masai Mara delivers Big Five density. Amboseli adds elephants beneath Mount Kilimanjaro.
ParkWhy children love itOur caution
Ol Pejeta ConservancyLast two northern white rhinos, Najin and Fatu. Chimpanzee sanctuary. Night drives possible.Check age limits for night drives in the Kids guide
Masai Mara National ReserveBig Five. Mara River crossings July to October. 1,510 square kilometres of plains.Longest game-drive days. Adult entry fee doubles from July
Amboseli National ParkElephant herds below Mount Kilimanjaro. Five habitats. Over 400 recorded bird species.Mountain cloud builds by mid-morning. 5 to 6 hours from Naivasha
Lake Nakuru National ParkBlack and white rhino sanctuary. Flamingos. Daytime leopards.Flamingo numbers vary. The Cliff takes guests aged 12 and over only
Nairobi National ParkLions against a city skyline. Ideal for the first full day.Short visit, not a substitute for a big park
Samburu National ReserveSpecial Five: Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich and gerenuk.About 325 km and 5 to 6 hours from Nairobi
Lake NaivashaBoat ride past hippos. Crescent Island walk among zebra and giraffe.A change of pace, not a game-drive park

For a first family safari we would pick Ol Pejeta and the Masai Mara every time. If elephants outrank rhinos in your house, the live 11-day finishes with two nights at Amboseli, or you can fly in for the 4 Days Flying Luxury Amboseli Safari at Kitirua Plains Lodge.

How do you pace drive days so children stay happy?

Count the hours before you count the animals. The live 11-day circuit has seven long road legs that add up to 27.5 to 31.5 hours. A three-base trim of Ol Pejeta, Lake Nakuru and the Masai Mara has three long legs that add up to 10.5 to 12.5 hours. That is roughly two-and-a-half times the time in the vehicle for the full circuit.

LegLive 11-day circuitThree-base trim
Nairobi to Samburu5 to 6 hoursNot included
Samburu to Ol Pejeta3 hoursNot included
Nairobi to Ol PejetaNot included4 to 5 hours (our estimate)
Ol Pejeta to Lake Nakuru2.5 hours2.5 hours
Lake Nakuru to the Masai Mara4 to 5 hours4 to 5 hours
Masai Mara to Lake Naivasha4 to 5 hoursNot included
Lake Naivasha to Amboseli5 to 6 hoursNot included
Amboseli to NairobiAbout 4 hoursNot included
Total road driving on long legs27.5 to 31.5 hours10.5 to 12.5 hours

Hours are the ranges stated on our live itinerary pages. The Amboseli to Nairobi return leg is not stated on the family page, so we use the roughly four hours on our Kenya Luxury Safari page. The Nairobi to Ol Pejeta figure is our own estimate.

The longest leg decides the mood of the day.

Cap every road leg at five hours where you can. Past that point the trip becomes a transfer with game drives attached. The live circuit touches six hours twice, which is the price of six parks. For under-eights we trim rather than endure it. Leave after breakfast. Save 6am starts for the Mara mornings when the cats are moving. Plan a named stop every 90 minutes. The equator sign near Nanyuki beats a fuel station for morale. Keep game drives to about three hours for under-tens. Our live trips run two to five hours per session and we sit at the short end for families. Never stack two long legs without a soft landing. Naivasha’s lakeside afternoon is the soft landing between the Mara and Amboseli.

Give every child a job. Binoculars, a bird tick-list, a sightings notebook. Rotate window seats in the pop-up roof vehicle. End every moving day at a pool. Every lodge on the live route lists one. Bottled water is carried on every drive, and we suggest packing snacks for the gaps between meals. Keep bags soft whenever you fly. The live circuit is road-only, but any variant that flies means soft bags with 15 kg per person on Mara flights and 20 kg on Diani flights, hand luggage included.

EXPERT NOTE |
On a family drive day we plan the stop before we plan the road. A viewpoint, a market, a pool. Children tolerate distance when the next stop has a name and a promise attached.

Which camps have family suites and kid-friendly activities?

Family-friendly camps in Kenya with family suites are fewer than brochures suggest. Most tented camps sleep two or three guests per tent, so a family of four needs either a family suite or two adjoining tents. We settle that at the quote stage, never at check-in. Every property on the live circuit lists full board, Wi-Fi, a pool, en-suite rooms and game drives.

Praro Amboseli CampAmboseli National ParkTented camp on a private conservancyElephants with Kilimanjaro behind them, pool
The CliffLake Nakuru National ParkAdults and teenagers aged 12 and over onlySkip it with younger children

Ask four questions of any camp. Is there a family suite or interconnecting tents? How are children escorted between tent and dining area after dark? Are children’s meals served at hours that match their appetites? What is the minimum age for each activity? The last answer varies by camp and by activity, so we keep that table in the Kids on Kenya Safari guide.

Activities that win children over are rarely game drives alone. Watching chimpanzees at Ol Pejeta. A camel ride on the Ewaso Nyiro. A boat ride past hippos and a guided walk on Crescent Island at Lake Naivasha. Feeding giraffes at the Giraffe Centre if you add the Nairobi family day. Plan one of these every second day.

How does a Kenya family safari with teenagers differ?

The best family safari in Kenya with teenagers changes three things: activities, rooms and budget. Activities first. Teens respond to doing, not just watching. Samburu adds cultural astronomy with Samburu elders and camel rides along the river. Ol Pejeta and the Masai Mara offer night drives where available. A dawn balloon flight over the Mara usually runs $450 to $600 per person, and it needs booking at the planning stage. Hell’s Gate National Park near Lake Naivasha offers walking and cycling among gorges.

Rooms second. Two adjoining rooms replace one family suite, and we can then use properties that do not offer suites at all. The Cliff above Lake Nakuru becomes an option once everyone is 12 or older. Our 11 Days Kenya Luxury Safari from $4,625 per person is built on exactly that rule, and it is the route we point to for Kenya luxury family safaris with older children.

Budget third. Published 2026 Mara schedules put the child fee at USD 50 for ages 9 to 17, so a 16-year-old costs a quarter of what an adult pays in the July to December season. Older children also bring more appetite for the long northern circuits, such as our 12 Days Wild Frontiers of Northern Kenya Safari from $12,400 per person. We check each camp’s age policy before we put that trip in front of a family.

Is the Masai Mara a good family safari destination?

Yes, if you give it three nights. A Masai Mara Kenya family safari works because the reserve delivers lion, cheetah, elephant and buffalo in open country where children can actually see them. It fails when families cram it into two nights and a six-hour road transfer each way.

Our live 11-day gives the family three nights and two full game-drive days at Mara Elatia Camp: one in the reserve with a picnic lunch and one in the private conservancies. Skip the Mara River crossing waits with children under eight. Crossings can take hours of sitting for a few minutes of action, and the open plains offer constant sightings in the meantime. Older children and teens are the ones who will happily wait.

If a road transfer is the problem, fly. Our 3 Days Masai Mara Fly-In Safari at Mara Serena Safari Lodge starts from $1,515 per person. The 5 Days Masai Mara Flying Safari at Royal Mara Safari Lodge in Mara North Conservancy starts from $4,000. For a shorter road-based stay, our 4 Days Masai Mara Luxury Safari at Enkakenya Camp on the Olare Orok River starts from $2,409.

What is the best time of year for a family safari?

June to October and January to March give the best dry-season game viewing across the parks on this route. The Great Wildebeest Migration crossings on the Mara River run July to October. Ol Pejeta and Samburu hold resident wildlife all year.

MonthsWhat you getFamily verdict
January to MarchDry and warm with strong game viewing and fewer visitorsQuiet and good value after Christmas
April to MayLong rains, lush landscapes and lower rates. The coast sees its heaviest rainBudget friendly. Skip the beach

NovemberShort rains and green scenery. The live family safari lists from $3,185 per personGood value for flexible families

Our advice is blunt. If you can travel in the last two weeks of June you get dry roads and the lower Mara fee. If you cannot, pick November for value or August for the migration and book as early as you can.

How do you add a beach finale to a family safari?

QUICK ANSWER | Can you add a beach to a family safari?
Yes. Fly from the Masai Mara via Wilson Airport to Ukunda airstrip and you reach Diani Beach in a day. Three beach nights give two full days. Add a Kisite-Mpunguti dhow trip and a visit to Colobus Conservation.

A family safari with a beach finale beats a safari that simply ends. Children arrive at Diani tired, sunburnt on the nose and full of stories. Salt water and sand do more for them than another transfer. We choose Diani because it has a long, safe swimming beach, plenty of family resorts, a marine park within a day trip and a short flight from Nairobi.

The live 11-day finishes in Nairobi, so the beach is a tailor-made extension, quoted per family. There are two ways to build it. The first is a 12 day Kenya family safari itinerary that trims the circuit to three bases and flies from the Mara to the coast. The second adds a Nairobi night, a flight and three beach nights to the full circuit, which stretches the trip to roughly 14 or 15 days depending on flight times. The table shows how we would build the first.

Building blockNightsWhereHow you get there and why it is there

Anchor park by road2Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Sweetwaters Serena CampRoad, 4 to 5 hours with stops. Rhinos, chimpanzees and a first real bush routine

Beach finale3Diani BeachTwo full beach days, a dhow trip and Colobus Conservation
Departure0Diani, Wilson Airport, international airportLate-evening international flight

The flight is the single best use of money in that plan. From the Mara airstrip you fly to Wilson Airport, about an hour, then to Ukunda airstrip near Diani, roughly another hour. Same-day connections normally exist but timetables shift by season, so we confirm the schedule when we quote. We book both legs on one operator because a connection is only protected inside a single operator’s flights. Bags must be soft. The allowance is 15 kg per person on Mara flights and 20 kg on Diani flights, hand luggage included. Operators keep a free secure luggage store at Wilson for anything extra.

On the coast, plan a full-day dhow trip from Shimoni to Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park and Wasini Island. It brings dolphins, snorkelling over coral and a Swahili seafood lunch. Listings put it at about nine hours door to door. Add a morning at Colobus Conservation on Diani Beach Road. The beach itself is safe for swimming. Reef snorkelling needs strong swimmers, so take a boat. Book the international departure for the late evening so a delayed coastal flight never costs you a seat.

Three beach nights is the minimum. The flight day and the departure day are both travel days, so three nights leave two full beach days. If you can add one day, add it to the beach, not the safari. The coast carries its own malaria considerations, covered in our Kenya safari vaccinations and health guide and the Kids guide.

How do you book a family safari, and what age rules apply?

Booking a family safari package with us takes six steps. Our live pages promise a specialist reply within 24 hours and a free, no-obligation quote. You can join a guaranteed departure or run the same itinerary privately on any date.

  1. Send your dates and who is travelling. Include the ages of your children and any date you cannot move.
  2. Receive a tailored plan. We build the days, the camps and any flights, then quote the family as a whole.
  3. Secure the trip with a flexible deposit. The balance is due before travel. We take card and bank transfer.
  4. Sort documents. Check our Kenya entry requirements and our vaccinations and health guide.
  5. Insure the trip. Our packages list travel insurance as not included. Our travel insurance guide explains why we insist on it. The Kenya government has now made it mandatory.
  6. Send your bag weights. Soft bags are essential for any light-aircraft leg. We rework the plan if the weights look tight.

Age rules differ by camp and by activity, and malaria precautions apply on the coast and in parts of the circuit. We list every limit in Kids on Kenya Safari so we will not repeat that table here. For the full range of trips, browse our safaris or our family safaris collection.

EXPERT NOTE |
Tell us the weight of your bags before we book any flights, and ask for adjoining tents at the quote stage rather than at check-in. Both are easy to fix early and painful to fix at the counter.

Frequently asked questions about a Kenya family safari

How many days do you need for a family safari in Kenya?

Ten to twelve days suits most families with children from six. Our live circuit runs 11 days across six parks, and a three-base trim of the same length leaves more rest. If you only want the Masai Mara, four to six days works.

How much does a Kenya family safari cost for four?

Our live 11-day Kenya Family Safari starts from $3,185 per person, which is $12,740 for four at the adult rate. Children’s rates depend on age and room set-up, so we quote them per family. Flights, beach nights, tips and insurance come on top.

What is the best itinerary for a first Kenya family safari?

Our live 11 Days Kenya Family Safari is the classic answer, with a trim to Ol Pejeta, Lake Nakuru and the Masai Mara for younger children. Both put the Masai Mara at the centre with three nights.

Can you add a beach to a Kenya safari?

Yes, and Diani Beach is the easiest option. Fly from the Masai Mara via Wilson Airport to Ukunda airstrip, about an hour on each leg. Allow at least three beach nights.

Is a private safari worth it for a family?

Yes, for most families. A private vehicle lets the guide change the pace, stop for snacks and end a drive early. Our live family safari is private for 4 to 6 guests with one driver-guide throughout.

How much driving is involved on the 11-day Kenya family safari?

About 27.5 to 31.5 hours across seven long road legs, with two legs reaching six hours. A three-base trim needs 10.5 to 12.5 hours. Both run in a private Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof and regular stops.

Which is better for families, the Masai Mara or Amboseli?

The Masai Mara for variety and Amboseli for elephants and Kilimanjaro views. Our 11-day circuit includes both. Families with four days and a love of elephants should consider Amboseli by air.

Do we need a visa or eTA for Kenya?

Most visitors need an electronic travel authorization before flying, though rules depend on your passport. Our Kenya entry requirements guide covers the current position.

Do we need vaccinations or malaria tablets?

It depends on where you travel from and where you stay. Our vaccinations and health guide and our Kids on Kenya Safari guide cover both in detail.

Do we need travel insurance?

We strongly recommend it. Our packages list travel insurance as not included. Read our travel insurance guide before you buy.

How much should we tip our driver-guide?

Our baseline is USD 15 per person per day, which is USD 60 a day for a family of four. Tips are at your discretion and reflect the service you received.

What bags should we bring?

Soft bags, always. The live 11-day is road-only, but any flight needs them: the allowance is 15 kg per person on Masai Mara flights and 20 kg on Diani flights, including hand luggage. Leave the hard suitcase in Nairobi.
