Solo Safari in Kenya: What the Single Supplement Really Costs and How to Cut It
We priced eleven safaris for one traveller, from a USD 650 shared tent in the Siana Conservancy to an 11-day luxury circuit carrying a USD 3,350 supplement.

Solo traveller in a 4x4 safari vehicle viewing a black rhino up close on a solo safari Kenya trip.
Wilson Airport. 5:40am. A solo safari guest is at the check-in desk with a hard-shell suitcase the scheduled light aircraft to the Masai Mara won’t load. Domestic safari flights take soft bags only, around 15 kilograms including hand luggage. Our team repacks the contents into a soft duffel at the counter and the guest makes the flight.
Nothing about that morning was about lions or loneliness. The bag was the problem. Travellers planning a solo safari in Kenya spend weeks worrying about safety and company, and neither is the real obstacle. We’ve driven the Narok road, stayed in the camps on this list and worked with the guides. The obstacle is almost always the price.
Here’s the price problem in one example. Our 4-day safari at Mara Elatia Camp in the Mara Triangle starts at USD 1,380 per person sharing. Travel alone and the single supplement adds USD 935, which lifts your total to USD 2,315. Same camp and same drives. You pay 68 percent more because one person is in the tent.
That gap isn’t fixed. On some safaris the supplement is as low as USD 230. On our book-a-seat group departures you can share a room or tent with a same-gender traveller and skip it, subject to availability. Solo travel on safari is easy. Paying double for it is optional. This guide shows where the supplement bites, where it disappears and which safaris we’d put you on.

| QUICK ANSWER | Is it safe to go on safari alone? Yes, a guided solo safari in Kenya is safe. You travel with a driver-guide in a 4×4 and stay in staffed camps. Wildlife rules are strict and your guide enforces them. Nairobi transfers are handled for you. |

Is it safe and worthwhile to go on a solo safari in Kenya?

Safe, yes. Worthwhile too. Nobody else decides when you leave camp or how long you sit with a leopard. On a guided safari you don’t drive and you don’t navigate. A driver-guide meets you, runs every game drive and deals with the logistics that make solo travel stressful elsewhere.
Camps are set up for guests who arrive alone. Our Naivasha and Mara pages state that lodges have trained security staff and that guests receive a wildlife safety briefing. At Royal Mara Safari Lodge in Mara North Conservancy the walking safari is led by an armed ranger and you can skip it. Mara Elatia Camp is unfenced, as many Mara camps are, so you follow the briefing and your guide’s instructions after dark.
The risks that catch solo travellers are ordinary ones. A missed pickup after a night flight. A bag that won’t fit the aircraft. A medical bill with no insurance. We deal with the first by arranging your airport and Wilson Airport transfers. Read our guides to Kenya safari travel insurance and safari vaccinations and health for the other two.
Who a solo safari suits
Go solo if you want control of the pace. Photographers do well on a private vehicle because it stops when you ask. First-timers do well because a small group or a good guide removes the planning. Anyone with a week of leave and nobody to match it does well too. Think twice if you want constant company and plan to book a private vehicle. You’ll have your guide and nobody else. A group departure fixes that.
Solo female travellers

Women travelling alone have extra questions about rooms, transfers and how a group will feel. We answer them in our guide to a solo female safari in Kenya. It’s the right next read if that’s you.
What is a single supplement and how much is it?

| QUICK ANSWER | What is a single supplement? A single supplement is the extra charge a solo traveller pays for a room priced for two. On our live pages it runs from USD 230 to USD 3,350. On book-a-seat group departures you can share with a same-gender traveller and skip it, subject to availability. |
Camps price a room for two. Travel alone and you occupy half of it. The supplement covers the empty half. Our published rates are per person sharing, so the supplement lands on top.
The amount swings wildly. It’s USD 230 on the 3-day Mara Serena fly-in safari and USD 3,350 on the 11-day Kenya luxury safari. Compare the supplement as a share of the sharing rate, not as a dollar figure. At Kitirua Plains Lodge in Amboseli the USD 300 supplement adds 12 percent to the USD 2,450 November departure. At Mara Elatia Camp the USD 935 supplement adds 68 percent. On the three book-a-seat group safaris with a published supplement it adds between 57 and 86 percent. That’s why room sharing matters most on the group departures.
The sharing rate is the headline. The solo total is the price.
| EXPERT NOTE | Add the supplement before you compare two safaris. On the November 2026 departures a solo traveller pays USD 2,315 for Mara Elatia Camp and USD 2,750 for Kitirua Plains Lodge. The sharing rates are USD 1,070 apart. The solo totals are USD 435 apart. The supplement changes the ranking of value. Kibara Mugo, Safari Writer and East Africa Specialist |
How much does a solo safari in Kenya cost?

| QUICK ANSWER | How much does a solo safari cost? A solo safari in Kenya costs from USD 650 for a shared-tent group departure to USD 7,830 for an 11-day luxury road safari with the supplement. Flying safaris run USD 1,580 to USD 4,630 for one traveller. International flights and tips are extra. |
Here’s every safari in this guide priced for one traveller. Each row uses the lowest published departure on the live page and the single supplement stated on that page.

| 11 Days Kenya Luxury Safari, Samburu to Amboseli | USD 4,480 | +USD 3,350 | USD 7,830 |
Prices were checked on our live safari pages on 21st October 2026. Peak-season departures cost more. The Mara Serena safari rises from USD 1,350 to USD 2,090 for July to September 2027. The Kitirua safari rises from USD 2,450 to USD 6,350 for 16th June to 31st October 2027.
What the price includes and what it doesn’t
Our rates cover accommodation on full board basis stated on each page, game drives, park and conservancy fees, your driver-guide and the transfers listed. They exclude international flights, visa or eTA fees, travel insurance and tips. Park fees sit inside the price but they explain the seasonal swing. Our pages quote the Masai Mara National Reserve fee at USD 200 per adult per day from July to December and USD 100 from January to June.
Budget for extras. A sunrise hot air balloon safari costs USD 480 to USD 600 per person on our pages. Our baseline tip for your driver-guide is USD 15 per person per day within a range of USD 10 to 20. The minimum for porters and lodge staff is KES 200. Tipping stays at your discretion.
How do group departures cut the cost for solo travellers?

A book-a-seat departure is the cheapest way to travel alone. You reserve one seat and not a whole vehicle. The vehicle carries a maximum of six guests, so every seat is a window seat. We don’t add extra seats in busy weeks. When a departure reaches six confirmed guests it closes and we open another vehicle.
The saving comes from sharing. A solo traveller can share a room with another same-gender traveller on the same departure and skip the supplement, subject to availability. At Osero Camp in the Siana Conservancy it’s a tent share. This is the biggest lever you have. On the 4-day Mara and Nakuru safari it turns a USD 1,646 solo total back into USD 900.
Every seat is a window seat. We cap the vehicle at six and we don’t add a seventh.
The trade-offs are real. Dates are fixed. The four group safaris we list run on Tuesdays from 6th April to 25th May 2027, which puts you in April and May. The long rains fall roughly from March to May, so you get green landscapes and fewer vehicles but you miss the July to October river crossings. If crossings are your reason to travel, skip the group departures and book a shared-vehicle or private safari in August or September. If cost and company are your reasons, a group departure is the right call.
Our guide to how book-a-seat safaris work covers pickups and group size in detail.
How do you meet other travellers on a solo safari?

| QUICK ANSWER | How do solo travellers meet people on safari? Join a set departure and you share a 4×4 with up to five other guests. Meals and game drives do the rest. Your guide keeps the group moving. Pick a private vehicle only if you want solitude. |
You meet people the way you do on any trip: in the vehicle and at the table. Safari makes it easier because the groups are small and the days are long. On a book-a-seat departure you share one 4×4 with up to five other guests for the whole circuit. The 3-day Mara Serena fly-in safari also use shared vehicles for game drives capped at six.
The camps are small too. Royal Mara Safari Lodge has eight river suites. Emboo River Camp has nine suites. Kitirua Plains Lodge has 13. Mara Elatia Camp has sixteen tents. Nobody disappears into a crowd at these properties.
We can’t promise a vehicle full of other solo travellers. What we can do is tell you how many seats are left on a departure before you pay. The live page shows it. If you want company, pick a group departure. If you want quiet, pick a private vehicle at a small camp. Don’t book a private vehicle expecting to meet people.
| EXPERT NOTE | Tell your guide on the first drive what you came for. A solo guest on a private vehicle can ask for a dawn start or a long wait at a river crossing, and crossings don’t run to a schedule. In a shared vehicle you can still ask for a photography stop. Guides read a vehicle better when guests speak up early. Nicholas Wangithi, Director & Founder |
Are women-only departures an option?

Yes. We run women-only departures and our women-only safari guide explains how they work and which itineraries are available. One example on our site is the Rift Valley Women Only Safari, a 7-day journey from Naivasha to the Masai Mara.
If you want an all-women group, that’s the format. If you prefer a mixed group but want a female roommate, ask about the same-gender share on our book-a-seat departures. Mixed and private safaris work well for women travelling alone too. A group of three women from Mexico told reviewers of our Mara Serena safari that they felt safe and well looked after throughout.
Solo doesn’t have to mean alone. A women-only departure fills the vehicle with people who chose the same trip.
What is the best time of year for a solo safari?

July to October is migration season. Our pages place the Mara River crossings in those months with the heaviest activity in August and September. It’s also the most expensive window. January to March brings calving season in Tanzania and fewer vehicles in the reserve. Amboseli gives its clearest Kilimanjaro views from June to October and it’s also good from January to March with fewer crowds.
April and May are the green season. Lodges drop their rates and group departures run at their lowest prices. Our 2027 book-a-seat departures all fall in these two months.
Season moves the base price far more than it moves your supplement. The Mara Serena safari costs USD 1,350 in March and USD 2,090 from July to September 2027. The Kitirua safari costs USD 2,450 in November 2026 and USD 6,350 from mid-June to October 2027. Our pick for a solo budget is January to March. You get strong wildlife, a Masai Mara park fee of USD 100 per adult per day and fewer vehicles. If you want crossings and can afford them, go in August.
How many days do you need for a solo safari?
Three days is the minimum and only if you fly. A road safari from Nairobi to the Siana Conservancy covers 225 to 250 kilometres and takes four to five hours each way. On the 3-day Osero Camp departure that leaves one full game-drive day. Mara Serena’s 3-day fly-in works better because the scheduled flight replaces that drive.
Four days is the sweet spot for most solo travellers. Mara Elatia Camp gives you two full days inside the Masai Mara National Reserve. Kitirua Plains Lodge gives you two full days in Amboseli. Five and six days add variety: Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha and Amboseli. Expect 13 to 14 hours of road across the 6-day group circuit.
Skip anything shorter than three days if you’re driving. Skip the 11-day luxury circuit unless budget is no object. It covers six ecosystems with transfers of five to six hours on the longest legs, and the supplement alone is USD 3,350.
How do you book a solo safari?
- Choose your format: a book-a-seat group departure, fly-in safari or a private safari.
- Open the safari page and check the dates. Each departure shows how many spots are left.
- Tell us you’re travelling solo. Our inquiry form has a Solo traveller option. Ask whether a same-gender share is possible on your date.
- Request your free, no-obligation quote. Our specialists reply within 24 hours.
- Secure your seat with a flexible deposit. The balance is due before travel and you can pay by card or PayPal or bank transfer.
- Sort the paperwork. Check current entry rules on our visa requirements page and arrange insurance using our travel insurance guide.
- Pack a soft bag. Scheduled safari flights allow around 15 kilograms including hand luggage.
| EXPERT NOTE | Tell us you’re travelling solo at the first message. A same-gender share depends on who else is booked on your date, so the earlier we check, the better your chance of avoiding the supplement. Rates on our pages are per person sharing. If you want a private run for one traveller, ask for a quote before you commit. Hellen Asiko, Director & Guest Experience Curator |
Which Kenyan safari is best for solo travel?

| QUICK ANSWER | What is the best safari for a solo traveller? The best Kenya safari for most solo travellers is the 3-day Osero Camp book-a-seat safari from USD 650. You can share a tent with a same-gender traveller to skip the supplement, subject to availability. For the Mara Triangle take the 4-day Mara Elatia Camp safari from USD 1,380. |
The right answer depends on what you want to fix. Here’s how we’d match it.
- Lowest cost: the 3-day Osero Camp group safari. Share a tent and you pay USD 650.
- Most company: the 5-day or 6-day book-a-seat circuits. You’re in the same six-seat vehicle for every leg.
- Best Mara value: Mara Elatia Camp. You get the quieter Mara Triangle and a shared vehicle capped at six.
- Lowest supplement on a flying safari: Mara Serena at USD 230.
- Elephants and Kilimanjaro: Kitirua Plains Lodge. The supplement is only USD 300.
- Lightest footprint: Emboo River Camp with its solar-charged electric vehicles.
- Space and night drives: Royal Mara Safari Lodge in Mara North Conservancy, with no more than four guests per drive vehicle.
Our blunt view: skip the 11-day luxury circuit as a solo traveller unless you can absorb a USD 3,350 supplement or share a private vehicle with a friend.

It’s the full country in eleven days. It’s also the one safari here where we’d push a solo traveller towards a shared departure. |

What should a solo traveller sort out before flying?

Four things. Insurance first: none of our packages include it and we recommend it on every safari, so read our Kenya safari travel insurance guide. Health second: speak to a doctor or travel clinic early and use our vaccinations and health guide. Entry rules third: check the current requirements before you book flights. Luggage last: pack a soft duffel, because scheduled flights generally don’t accept hard-shell suitcases.
Take the pickup we arrange rather than hailing a ride after a night flight. Nairobi hotel pickups and transfers to Wilson Airport can be arranged as part of the package.
Frequently asked questions about solo safaris in Kenya
Can I go on safari alone without joining a group?
Yes. You can join a book-a-seat group departure, take a shared-vehicle safari such as Mara Elatia Camp or Mara Serena, or ask us to run a safari privately on any date. The rates on our pages are per person sharing, so request a quote if you want a private run for one.
Do solo travellers always pay a single supplement?
No. On our book-a-seat group departures you can share a room or tent with a same-gender traveller on the same departure and avoid it, subject to availability. On other safaris the supplement shown on the page applies.
Is a solo safari lonely?
Rarely. Group and shared-vehicle safaris put you with up to five other guests all day and the small camps we use have eight to sixteen rooms or tents. Book a private vehicle only if you want quiet.
Is it safe for a woman to go on safari alone?
Yes, on a guided safari with a driver-guide and an established camp. Our solo female safari guide covers rooms, transfers and group options. If you want an all-women group, look at our women-only departures.
What is the cheapest solo safari in Kenya?
The 3-day Osero Camp book-a-seat safari at USD 650 per person is our lowest published rate. You can share a tent to avoid the supplement, subject to availability. Ask us for the supplement before booking because the page doesn’t publish it.
How far ahead should I book a solo safari?
Book as early as you can for July to October. Each set departure has limited spaces and a date closes once it fills. A flexible deposit secures your seat.
Do I need travel insurance on a solo safari?
Yes, we recommend it on every safari and none of our packages include it. Our Kenya safari travel insurance guide explains what to check.
How much luggage can I take on a fly-in safari?
Around 15 kilograms per person in a soft-sided bag, hand luggage included. The Kitirua page quotes 15 to 20 kilograms. Hard-shell suitcases are generally not accepted.
How much should I tip as a solo traveller?
Our baseline is USD 15 per person per day for your driver-guide within a range of USD 10 to 20. Tipping stays at your discretion. The minimum for porters and lodge staff is KES 200.
Can I add a hot air balloon safari when travelling alone?
Yes, as an optional extra booked at the planning stage. Our pages quote USD 480 to USD 600 per person depending on the operator.
Which vaccines or malaria tablets do I need?
That depends on your home country and itinerary, so speak to a doctor or travel clinic several weeks before you fly. Our vaccinations and health guide lists what to raise with them.
Plan Your Solo Safari with Us

You now know where the supplement bites and where it disappears. It’s USD 230 at Mara Serena and USD 3,350 on the Kenya luxury circuit. On the group departures it’s zero if you share a tent or room. The rest is matching your dates, your budget and your tolerance for company to the right safari.
That’s the part we do. Talk to Hellen Asiko, Director & Guest Experience Curator at Afrikan Accent Adventures. She’ll match your dates to a departure, check same-gender share options and give you a solo total before you pay a deposit. Beyond what’s in this guide we arrange your airport and Wilson Airport transfers and the flights where the itinerary includes them. We’ll also tell you what to pack, so nobody is repacking a hard suitcase at the check-in desk at 5:40am.
Travel alone, share the seat and pay for the safari, not for the empty bed.
