Women Only Safari in Kenya: Who It’s For, What Seven Days Cost and What to Expect

Women Only Safari in Kenya: Who It’s For, What Seven Days Cost and What to Expect

Two women celebrating through the pop-up roof of a safari Land Cruiser at sunset, capturing the joy of a women only safari Kenya trip.

Day one of our women only safari has no game drive in it. It has a seedling. A guest lands at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Hellen Asiko, our Director and Guest Experience Curator, meets her there, and the private transfer ends at the Wangari Maathai Wing of the Sarova Panafric hotel in Nairobi. Before dinner there is a short walk into the hotel gardens to plant a tree in honour of Wangari Maathai, Africa’s first woman Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

The wing is six ensuite rooms and nothing else. The staff are women, from housekeeping to room service to security. There’s a yoga mat in the room and a portrait of Maathai on the wall. Over Kenyan coffee at the welcome dinner Hellen walks the guest through the week, and from the next morning a female driver-guide takes over the vehicle for the rest of the trip.

We get one question about this format more than any other: is it safe? The honest answer is that Kenya’s licensed operators and established camps are safe for women whatever the guide’s gender. A women only safari doesn’t change the lions or the roads. What it changes is who sits beside you for seven days, and whether you spend any of that time managing strangers instead of watching a rhino at Lake Nakuru.

That is the real case for it, and it’s a stronger one than safety. We run four women only routes, and our view is blunt. Book it private. Book the seven-day Naivasha-to-Mara route if it’s your first safari. Skip any “ladies only” tour that puts a mixed crew behind the wheel. The rest of this guide covers who goes, what the days look like, what it costs and when to book.

QUICK ANSWER | What is a women only safari in Kenya?
A women only safari is a Kenya safari led by an all-female team of driver-guides and hosts. Ours run privately for up to six guests. The seven-day Naivasha-to-Mara route costs from $2,100 per person. It suits solo women and groups of friends.

Why do women choose a women only safari in Kenya?

Three things drive the choice, and only one of them is safety.

The first is control over who you spend a week with. On a mixed set-departure tour you share a vehicle with whoever booked the same dates. On our private routes the vehicle is yours, whether you travel alone or with up to five companions. The second is a service chain with no gaps. Your airport meeting, your Nairobi hotel wing, your driver-guide and your camp hosts are all women. The third is access. Day 5 includes a visit to a Maasai women-led craft and conservation enterprise near the reserve, and on Day 6 your guides tell their own stories of entering a profession still largely led by men.

A women only safari doesn’t make Kenya safer. It makes the week yours.

What is different about a female guide?

The qualification is identical. Every guide on our road itineraries holds Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association (KPSGA) certification, the same standard held by Kenya’s top male guides. Being a woman is additional to that standard, not a substitute for it. What changes is the texture of the day. Practical things get said out loud: when the next toilet stop is, whether you want cover for it, whether you’d rather stay with a sighting or push on to camp.

Women only safari or ladies-only tour: what’s the difference?

A women only safari has a female service chain from the airport to the final drop-off. A ladies-only tour has a female group but may run behind a mixed crew. The two are not the same product, and it’s worth asking any operator which one they’re selling. Neither is the same as a group of strangers. Ours are private, so the only women in your vehicle are the ones you chose to bring.

EXPERT NOTE
Ask one question before you pay a deposit anywhere: who is physically driving the vehicle on Day 4, and who is hosting me at camp? If the answer is not a named woman, the trip is a ladies-only tour with a women only label. Our itinerary answers it on the page, from the airport meeting to the farewell lunch.

What is the 7-day Naivasha-to-Mara itinerary?

The Rift Valley Women Only Safari is the gentlest of our four routes and the one we point first-timers to. Everything is by road, so there are no flights and no luggage limits. Meals are included as follows: dinner on Day 1, full board on Days 2 to 6, and breakfast and lunch on Day 7.

Day 1: Arrival in Nairobi

Hellen Asiko meets you at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for a private transfer to the Wangari Maathai Wing at the Sarova Panafric. It is Kenya’s first hotel wing reserved solely for female guests. You plant a seedling in the hotel gardens, then sit down to a welcome dinner where Hellen walks you through the days ahead.

Day 2: Nairobi to Lake Naivasha

Your female driver-guide takes over after breakfast. You leave Nairobi in the late morning and reach Naivasha in about one and a half to two hours, in time for lunch at Great Rift Valley Lodge & Golf Resort. The grounds are unfenced, so giraffe, zebra and waterbuck graze the fairways below your veranda. In the afternoon a boat ride on Lake Naivasha takes you past hippo pods and fish eagle, cormorant and kingfisher.

Day 3: Lake Naivasha to Lake Nakuru

The morning is yours, with an optional nature walk across the lodge grounds. The drive to Lake Nakuru takes about an hour and a half, and you check in to Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge on its forested ridge above the lake in time for lunch. The afternoon game drive in Lake Nakuru National Park covers the closely guarded rhino sanctuary and the park’s tree-climbing lions, with flamingo flocks along the shore in season.

Day 4: Lake Nakuru to the Masai Mara

A final morning game drive in Lake Nakuru National Park comes first. The road south then takes four to five hours through the Great Rift Valley, with rest stops built in. You arrive at Mara Elatia Camp in the Mara Triangle, settle in and head out on the first Masai Mara game drive of the trip.

Day 5: A full day in the Masai Mara

The whole day goes to the Masai Mara National Reserve, searching for lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. Between July and October, the Great Wildebeest Migration adds Mara River crossings, with the heaviest activity in August and September. In the afternoon you visit the Maasai women-led enterprise, then return to camp at dusk for dinner.

Day 6: Sunrise drive and a slow afternoon

You rise before dawn for a sunrise game drive and a bush breakfast. A hot air balloon safari is an optional upgrade for anyone who wants to see the Mara from above. The afternoon is deliberately empty: quiet time at camp, a spa treatment or a short guided nature walk. The evening ends at the campfire with your guides’ own stories.

Day 7: Masai Mara to Nairobi

After breakfast you drive back to Nairobi for a farewell lunch at the Carnivore restaurant, where Hellen joins you. Drop-off is at the airport or a Nairobi address, timed to your onward flight, and your guide stays with you to the last moment.

Three nights in one camp beat three camps in three nights.

EXPERT NOTE
The design choice that matters most on this route is the three consecutive nights at Mara Elatia. Every night you move camp costs you game drive hours and gives you packing in return. Staying put lets your guide follow a sighting across the Mara Triangle and still bring you back to the same bed.

How safe is a women only safari?

QUICK ANSWER | Is a women only safari in Kenya safe?
Yes, with a licensed operator and normal precautions. Kenya’s established camps and licensed safari vehicles are safe for women travellers. A women only safari adds an all-female team and a women-only Nairobi hotel wing. It doesn’t change wildlife or road risks, so check your government’s travel advice first.

What the women only format adds

It removes the points in the trip where you rely on people you haven’t chosen. You’re met at the airport by Hellen Asiko rather than finding a taxi. Your Nairobi night is in a wing with female-only staff, including security. One driver-guide stays with you from Day 2 to the last moment of Day 7, so you aren’t handed between drivers on transfer days. The road legs are broken by rest stops, and the longest, Lake Nakuru to the Mara, runs four to five hours.

What it can’t change

Wildlife is wild. Follow your guide’s instructions on foot and in the vehicle, always. Roads between parks are long and sometimes rough. Malaria is a consideration in parts of Kenya, so speak to a travel clinic before you fly about prophylaxis and any vaccine requirements. Governments publish their own Kenya travel advice, and it changes, so read yours close to departure rather than relying on anything written here.

Questions to ask any operator

  • Is the company licensed by the Tourism Regulatory Authority and a member of the Kenya Association of Tour Operators?
  • Are the driver-guides KPSGA certified, and who is my guide by name?
  • Who hosts me at each camp and hotel?
  • What is the plan if I fall ill or the vehicle breaks down in the Mara?
  • Is travel insurance required or recommended? Our own view is in our Kenya safari travel insurance guide.

For the wider picture on travelling alone, read our solo female safari guide and the general solo traveller guide.

How much does a women only safari cost, and are there single supplements?

QUICK ANSWER | How much does a women only safari cost?
The seven-day Naivasha-to-Mara women only safari costs from $2,100 to $2,980 per person, depending on the date. Solo travellers pay a $590 single supplement. The price covers six nights, road transfers, park fees and game drives. Flights, insurance, tips and ballooning cost extra.

Price follows season more than anything else. The same seven days, camps and guide cost $2,100 per person for the November to mid-December 2026 window and $2,980 for 1st July to 15th September 2027. The table below shows the live per-person rates, sharing a room, at the time of writing.

Travel windowPrice per person
1 Nov to 19 Dec 2026$2,100
23 Dec 2026 to 2 Jan 2027$2,600
3 Jan to 28 Feb 2027$2,270
1 Mar to 31 May 2027$2,210 to $2,255
1 to 15 Jun 2027$2,365
16 to 30 Jun 2027$2,485
1 Jul to 15 Sep 2027$2,980
16 to 30 Sep 2027$2,840
1 to 31 Oct 2027$2,730
1 Nov to 21 Dec 2027$2,640

Single supplements

Rates are per person sharing. If you travel alone and want a private room throughout, a single supplement of $590 applies on this route. That puts a solo traveller in the peak window at $3,570 and in the cheapest window at $2,690. Our other routes carry different supplements: $555 on the Amboseli route and $420 on the Samburu route.

What the price includes

  • All road transfers with an all-female driver-guide
  • Six nights of full board accommodation, including the Wangari Maathai Wing
  • All game drives plus park and reserve fees for Lake Nakuru National Park and the Masai Mara National Reserve
  • The Lake Naivasha boat ride and the Maasai women’s enterprise visit
  • Bush breakfast, sundowners as noted, and bottled water on game drives
  • A farewell lunch at the Carnivore restaurant with Hellen

What it doesn’t include

International flights, visa or eTA fees, travel insurance, tips, the hot air balloon safari, spa treatments, alcohol beyond camp inclusions and personal items. Our baseline for tipping a driver-guide is $15 per person per day, at your discretion. For the six guided days from Day 2 that is about $90. Camp and lodge staff tips start at KES 200 each.

EXPERT NOTE
Read the price bands before you read the itinerary. The gap between the cheapest and dearest window is $880 for an identical route. If the migration isn’t the point of your trip, March to May and November to mid-December buy the same guide and the same Mara Elatia nights for far less.
Kibara Mugo, Safari Writer and East Africa Specialist

When are the departures, and what is the best time to go?

QUICK ANSWER | What is the best time for a women only safari?
July to October is the best time for the Great Wildebeest Migration in the Masai Mara, with the heaviest river crossings in August and September. It is also the most expensive window. Wildlife is strong all year. March to May is the cheapest period.

We run this exact itinerary privately on any date you choose. The live safari page also lists departure windows that begin on 1st November 2026 and run through to 21st December 2027, each with its own rate. A flexible deposit secures your dates, the balance is due before travel, and we take card and bank transfer.

Migration season, July to October

This is the window that adds Mara River crossings to your three Mara nights. Expect the busiest plains and the highest rates. If you want the crossings, book early, because the best dates fill first. Our live migration updates track where the herds are.

The rest of the year

Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru hold strong resident wildlife and birdlife all year, and the Mara’s lion, elephant, buffalo and rhino don’t leave when the herds do. The long rains fall roughly between March and May, which is also when rates are lowest. The Christmas and New Year window is the other price spike, at $2,600 for 23rd December to 2nd January.

The herds are a bonus. The guide, the camp and the pace are the trip.

EXPERT NOTE
Tell us your arrival flight, your dates and whether you’re travelling alone or with friends. We confirm the rate for your party before you commit to a deposit. The route stays fixed in its bones. What we tune is the pace, the room set-up and extras such as the balloon safari.
Hellen Asiko, Director and Guest Experience Curator

How big is the group, and who goes?

The Naivasha-to-Mara route is private for two to six guests. You have your own vehicle and your own female driver-guide. Nobody is added to your group. Our other routes run private for two to six guests on the Amboseli route, two to six on the Samburu route and four to six on the Laikipia flying safari.

QUICK ANSWER | Who goes on a women only safari?
A women only safari suits solo women and groups of friends. It also suits women marking a milestone and teams on a retreat. What they share is a wish for an all-female team and a private vehicle. It isn’t built for travellers who want a crowd to meet.

Here is how we’d match the traveller to the trip.

  • The first-time solo traveller. Book the Naivasha-to-Mara route. It has the fewest transfers and three nights in one camp.
  • Friends splitting a vehicle. Two to six of you share the vehicle and the guide, and the per-person rate stays the same.
  • The returning safari traveller. Look at the Samburu route for rarer northern species, or the Laikipia flying safari for a short, specific trip.
  • A milestone or a retreat. Any route can be run privately for your own group on your own date.

Can you go on a women only safari alone?

QUICK ANSWER | Can you go on a women only safari alone?
Yes. You get the vehicle and guide entirely to yourself, with no strangers added. A $590 single supplement applies on the seven-day route if you want a private room throughout. You are met, hosted and guided by women from the airport onward.

Who should book something else

If you want a lively crowd of new people every evening, a private route will feel quiet, and a mixed set-departure group suits you better. If you’re travelling with husbands, sons or male friends, our family and mixed-group safaris are the right fit, such as the 11 Days Kenya Family Safari. We would rather tell you that than sell you the wrong trip.

What should you pack for a women only safari?

Pack light and neutral. Our full checklist is in the African safari packing list. The points below are the ones that matter on this route.

Clothing

Khaki, green and brown for game drives, plus comfortable closed-toe shoes for uneven ground at stops. Many guides advise avoiding black and dark blue in the Mara, where tsetse flies are drawn to them. Evenings cool quickly, so bring a light jacket or fleece.

Women-specific

  • A supportive sports bra for long, bumpy drives
  • Your own menstrual products, because smaller camps and park shops stock little
  • A scarf or buff for dust on open game drives
  • A wide-brimmed hat, high-factor sunscreen and insect repellent

Gear

Binoculars and a camera with spare batteries, since charging points can be limited at smaller tented camps. Kenya uses the three-pin Type G plug at 240 volts. Bottled water is supplied on game drives. If you add the Laikipia flying safari, pack in a soft-sided bag, because scheduled bush flights carry luggage limits. Confirm the weight with Hellen before you pack.

What does a day on a women only safari actually feel like?

The rhythm is the same on any good safari. You eat breakfast before sunrise and take a morning game drive while the light is soft and the animals are active. You return for lunch and a rest through the heat of the day. A second drive runs through the late afternoon until dusk, then dinner and, in the Mara, a fire under a very dark sky.

What’s different here is the pace and the company. On this route Day 3 starts slowly and Day 6 has an empty afternoon on purpose. There’s one drive of four to five hours, from Lake Nakuru to the Mara, and everything else is shorter. Conversation at the campfire turns to the guides themselves, and to the women running the community enterprise you met earlier in the week. Those evenings are what most guests talk about afterwards.

The price gap is real, and it buys specific things: a private vehicle, an all-female team, a women-only Nairobi night and three Mara nights in one camp. If budget is your first filter, our 6-day book-a-seat safari starts from $1,235 per person and is a sound way to see the Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha and Amboseli. If who you travel with matters more than the number on the invoice, book private.

What should you sort out before you book?

Most visitors need a Kenya eTA before flying, and the rules and fees change, so check our Kenya entry requirements guide close to your departure date. Travel insurance isn’t included in any of our women only safaris and we strongly recommend it. Our Kenya safari travel insurance guide explains what to look for. Speak to a travel clinic about malaria prophylaxis and vaccines well before you travel.

Frequently asked questions about women only safaris in Kenya

Is a women only safari in Kenya safe?

Yes, with a licensed operator and normal precautions. Kenya’s established camps and licensed safari vehicles are safe for women travellers. The women only format adds an all-female team and a women-only Nairobi hotel wing, but it can’t change wildlife or road risks, so read your own government’s travel advice before you book.

Who goes on a women only safari?

Solo women, groups of friends, women marking a milestone and teams on a retreat all suit the format. What they share is a wish for an all-female team and a private vehicle. If you want a crowd of new faces every night, a mixed set-departure group suits you better.

How much does a women only safari in Kenya cost?

Our seven-day Naivasha-to-Mara route costs from $2,100 to $2,980 per person sharing, depending on the date. The eight-day Amboseli route starts from $2,270 and the Samburu route from $2,110. Single supplements are $590, $555 and $420 respectively. The Laikipia flying safari is priced on request.

Can you go on a women only safari alone?

Yes. Solo travellers have the vehicle and guide entirely to themselves, or can invite their own companions. A single supplement applies if you want a private room throughout. On the seven-day route it is $590.

What is the best time for a women only safari in Kenya?

July to October is best for the Great Wildebeest Migration, with the heaviest Mara River crossings in August and September. Wildlife is strong year-round, and March to May has the lowest rates. Christmas and New Year carry a second price spike.

Is a women only safari private or with strangers?

It is private. Your vehicle and your driver-guide are shared only with the companions you bring, up to six guests on the seven-day route. We can also run the itinerary on any date you choose.

Are the guides really women, and are they qualified?

Yes. On our three road itineraries every driver-guide is a woman and holds KPSGA certification. On the Laikipia route our own team is female, while Ol Gaboli’s guiding is done by the lodge’s local guides and its ownership and governance are by Maasai women.

What is the Wangari Maathai Wing?

It is a women-only hotel wing at the Sarova Panafric in Nairobi, described as Kenya’s first reserved solely for female guests. It has six ensuite rooms and a female-only staff covering housekeeping, room service and security. It is named for Wangari Maathai, founder of the Green Belt Movement.

Is it a good first safari?

Yes. The Naivasha-to-Mara route is our gentlest, with fewer transfers and three consecutive nights in one Masai Mara camp. The activity level is easy and game drives are seated in a private 4×4.

What does the price include?

Road transfers, six nights of full board accommodation, game drives, park and reserve fees, the Lake Naivasha boat ride, the Maasai women’s enterprise visit, bottled water on drives and a farewell lunch at Carnivore. International flights, visa fees, insurance, tips, ballooning and spa treatments are extra.

Do I need a visa and travel insurance?

Most visitors need a Kenya eTA before flying, so check our entry requirements guide close to departure. Travel insurance isn’t included and we recommend it for every guest. Both guides are linked in this article.

Can I extend the trip or add Laikipia?

Yes. Because every route starts and ends in Nairobi, the Laikipia flying safari can be run before or after any road route. Extensions and camp upgrades are priced on request.

How much should I tip?

Our baseline is $15 per person per day for your driver-guide, within a $10 to $20 range, at your discretion. Lodge and camp staff tips start at KES 200 each. Carry small notes for both.

Reserve your seat on the next women only departure

This guide covered who a women only safari suits, what seven days look like from Nairobi through Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru to Mara Elatia, what the safari costs from $2,100 per person and when to go. What it can’t do is match your dates, your party size and your budget to a camp. That is what Afrikan Accent Adventures, a Nairobi-based safari operator, does beyond the page. We run the route privately on any date, extend it, add the Laikipia flying safari or move it to Amboseli or Samburu.

Start with Hellen Asiko, our Director and Guest Experience Curator, who will confirm a rate and a window for your party and hold your dates with a flexible deposit. The first thing waiting for you is the same as it was for every guest before you.
