Overview

About this safari

From the last two northern white rhinos at Ol Pejeta to the Milk Mamas of Reteti and the floodlit waterhole at The Ark, this road safari links four of Kenya's most distinct ecosystems in six days.

Our driver guide Mike picks up most northern circuit guests at 6:30am, either from a Nairobi hotel or straight off the international arrivals hall at JKIA. The road climbs almost immediately into Kenya’s central highlands, running past tea and coffee smallholdings on the slopes below Mount Kenya, and by 9:30 we are slowing down at the sign that marks the equator just outside Nanyuki town, one foot in the northern hemisphere and one in the southern, cameras out before anyone has had their second coffee.

We turn off the tarmac at Rongai Gate a little after midday. On one of our last groups through here, a black rhino was grazing thirty metres from the gate house before we had even signed the visitor log. Nobody expected that on arrival. That is Ol Pejeta in a single frame: 90,000 acres of Laikipia bush holding the largest population of black rhino in East Africa, and it does not wait for the afternoon game drive to prove it.

This is not the itinerary we build for someone chasing the Great Migration or ticking off the Masai Mara for the first time. It is built for a different kind of traveller, one who wants rhino conservation done properly, wildlife found nowhere else in Kenya, a working elephant orphanage staffed by the local community and a night spent at a floodlit waterhole in a lodge shaped like Noah’s Ark. Six days. One vehicle. One driver guide. No flights.

Skip the Mara for a week and this loop still gives you something most safari itineraries never touch: the last two northern white rhinos on the planet, the Samburu Special Five found only north of the equator and a Samburu run sanctuary that has changed how an entire community feeds its elephants. That is the argument for this route, and it holds up.

Practical Information:

Best Time to Travel

This circuit operates year-round, but the dry months of June to October and January to February offer the best road conditions and optimal wildlife viewing around water sources. The long rains in April and May can make the unpaved approach to Reteti challenging.

Driving Times and Logistics

The entire route covers roughly 750 kilometers in a private 4×4 safari vehicle. Expect a 3.5-hour drive (207 km) from Nairobi to Ol Pejeta, 4 hours (200 km) from Ol Pejeta to Samburu, 5 hours (300 km) from Samburu to the Aberdares, and 3.5 hours back to Nairobi. Roads are mostly tarmac, with the final stretches into reserves running on dirt and murram tracks.

Reteti Session and Milk Mamas Visit

Spend the morning at Reteti Elephant Sanctuary inside Namunyak Conservancy, timed for the interactive milk feeding session. You will meet the local Samburu Milk Mamas, hear how the sanctuary supports both wildlife and women, and watch keepers bottle-feed rescued calves. Pack sunscreen, a hat, and extra drinking water, as no food or refreshments are sold on-site.

Night Waterhole Viewing at The Ark

Experience effortless, around-the-clock wildlife viewing at The Ark lodge in Aberdare National Park. Elephants, buffalos, and rare nocturnal animals gather right outside at the floodlit Yasabara waterhole and salt lick. Guests can watch from cozy viewing decks or rely on the in-room buzzer system, which quietly alerts you whenever big game arrives after dark so you never miss a moment.

Your itinerary

A guide to your journey — we’ll fine-tune every day around you.

Day1

Nairobi to Ol Pejeta Conservancy

🍽 Lunch · Dinner

Pickup is from your Nairobi hotel or JKIA, timed for a 6:30am departure so that you reach Ol Pejeta in good light. The drive north runs on tarmac through Kenya’s central highlands, climbing past tea and coffee estates and small market towns before the equator crossing near Nanyuki, then on to Rongai Gate at Ol Pejeta Conservancy, about 207 kilometres and three and a half hours from Nairobi.

Ol Pejeta sits on 90,000 acres of Laikipia County between the foothills of the Aberdares and Mount Kenya, and it holds the largest black rhino population in East Africa. It is also the only place on the continent where the last two northern white rhinos in the world, Najin and Fatu, still live under twenty four hour guard.

After a light lunch at Maisha Sweetwaters Camp, the afternoon is built around a rhino focused game drive rather than a general Big Five checklist. Our guides know which sections of the conservancy the black rhino favour at this time of day, and Ol Pejeta’s own rangers often radio through sightings as they happen.

This opening day suits any traveller starting a Kenya safari from Nairobi who wants rhino sightings within hours of leaving the city rather than after a long flight north. Overnight at Maisha Sweetwaters Camp, a tented camp near Rongai Gate with sixty self-contained tents overlooking a resident waterhole and views toward Mount Kenya.

🍽 Lunch · Dinner ✦ Equator Crossing Stop✦ Scenic Central Highlands Drive✦ Targeted Black Rhino Game Drive
Day2

Full Day at Ol Pejeta, Rhinos and the Chimpanzee Sanctuary

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner

Day two is a full day inside the conservancy, with a morning game drive before the heat sets in and a second drive in the late afternoon. Ol Pejeta’s open plains and river fed woodland hold all of the Big Five, alongside cheetah, Grevy’s zebra and more than one hundred black rhino.

A visit to the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary is worked into the morning. It is Kenya’s only chimpanzee sanctuary, home to chimps rescued from conflict zones and the illegal pet trade across Central Africa, and it sits inside Ol Pejeta’s boundary.

EXPERT NOTE

Notched ears tell you more than colour or size when you are trying to tell Ol Pejeta’s black rhino apart in the field. Our rangers and Ol Pejeta’s own monitoring team use the same ear notch system, so if you ask your guide which rhino you are looking at, chances are they can tell you its name.
Nicholas Wangithi, Director and Founder

“This is the itinerary we send when a guest tells us they have already done the Mara three times and want to see something Kenya’s classic circuit skips entirely.”

Overnight again at Maisha Sweetwaters Camp. Guests who want a slower second day can swap the second drive for a rhino tracking walk with an armed ranger, arranged directly through the conservancy.

Day3

Ol Pejeta to Samburu, Into Special Five Territory

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner 🏕 Surana Buffalo Springs

After breakfast we leave Ol Pejeta and drive north through Isiolo toward Samburu County, a journey of roughly four hours covering just over 200 kilometres. The landscape changes fast on this stretch, from Laikipia’s green ranchland to the dry acacia scrub and doum palms of the Ewaso Nyiro River basin.

Lunch is taken on arrival, and the afternoon is given over to a game drive in search of the Samburu Special Five, five species found in this arid ecosystem and rarely seen further south: Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, gerenuk and Somali ostrich.

Wildlife photographers and repeat Kenya visitors often rate this single afternoon drive among the highlights of the whole circuit, simply because these five species do not appear on a standard Masai Mara or Amboseli itinerary. Overnight at Surana Buffalo Springs, a camp of seventeen tented suites set on a ridge above the Ewaso Nyiro River, each with its own private plunge pool and a view toward Mount Ololokwe.

Day4

Reteti Elephant Sanctuary and the Milk Mamas of Namunyak

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner 🏕 Surana Buffalo Springs

Breakfast is early, because the morning is dedicated to Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, Africa’s first community owned elephant sanctuary, set inside the Namunyak Community Conservancy roughly ninety minutes to two hours’ drive from Samburu, depending on the exact camp.

Reteti’s Milk Mamas programme buys surplus goat milk directly from more than a thousand Samburu women across Namunyak, pasteurises it on site and bottle feeds it to orphaned and abandoned elephant calves around the clock. Guests watch a feeding session from the viewing platform and hear from the keepers, most of whom are drawn from the local Samburu community.

EXPERT NOTE

We schedule this visit for the mid morning feed whenever possible, since the road into Namunyak is unpaved for the final stretch and cooler morning temperatures make for a smoother drive. Pack a hat and sunscreen even for a short visit. There is no food or drink sold on site, so we always send guests off with water and a snack.
Hellen Asiko, Director and Guest Experience Curator

We return to camp for lunch, then head back out for an afternoon game drive across the Ewaso Ng’iro bridge into Buffalo Springs National Reserve, known for its natural springs, open savannah and good sightings of leopard and cheetah in the late afternoon light. Overnight again at Surana Buffalo Springs.

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner 🏕 Surana Buffalo Springs ✦ Reteti Elephant Orphanage Visit✦ Samburu Milk Mamas Feeding Session✦ Buffalo Springs Game Drive✦ Sunset River Views
Day5

Samburu to the Aberdares, The Ark and the Yasabara Waterhole

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner 🏕 The Ark Lodge

One last morning game drive in Samburu before checkout, then a long drive south to the Aberdares, roughly five hours covering close to 300 kilometres through Isiolo, Nanyuki and Nyeri.

Guests check in for lunch at the Aberdare Country Club, which serves as the staging post for The Ark. Private vehicles are not permitted beyond this point. A dedicated shuttle carries guests the final stretch into Aberdare National Park and onto The Ark itself, a lodge built in the shape of Noah’s Ark overlooking the floodlit Yasabara waterhole and salt lick.

The afternoon and evening are unstructured by design. Guests settle onto one of the lodge’s viewing decks with a drink and watch elephant, buffalo and occasionally black rhino or leopard come to the waterhole as the light drops. A buzzer in every room alerts guests if anything notable arrives at the waterhole after dark, so nobody has to stay awake to catch it.

Day6

Aberdares to Nairobi, Farewell Lunch at Carnivore

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch

After an early breakfast at The Ark, the shuttle returns guests to the Aberdare Country Club, where the private vehicle and driver guide are waiting for the drive back to Nairobi, roughly three and a half hours south.

We time the return so the group arrives at Carnivore Restaurant on Langata Road in time for a farewell lunch. Open since 1980, Carnivore is Nairobi’s best known nyama choma restaurant, where waiters carve grilled meat tableside from Maasai sword skewers as part of its all you can eat Beast of a Feast.

After lunch, it is a short transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for departure. Six days after that first rhino sighting at Rongai Gate, most guests leave having seen wildlife Kenya’s Masai Mara circuit simply does not offer.

We had an amazing experience with Afrikan Accent Adventures from start to finish. Everything was well taken care of before, during, and even after the trip. Hellen did a great job coordinating and making sure we got the most out of our limited time. Our guide, Nicholas, was fantastic—safe driver, always on time, super knowledgeable about wildlife, and gave great tips for spotting animals and taking photos. He also kept the trip fun and engaging the whole way. Thanks to the team, our first safari experience was truly unforgettable. We even saw the Big Five on the first day, which made the rest of the trip even more enjoyable! Highly recommended, and we’d love to go with them again!

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

What should I pack for the safari?

Pack light, neutral-colored clothing (khaki, green, brown), comfortable closed-toe shoes, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars, and a camera with extra batteries. Evenings can be cool, so bring a light jacket.

How many days do you need for Ol Pejeta and Samburu together?

Four full days is the minimum for both, and this itinerary gives Ol Pejeta a day and a half and Samburu two and a half days including the Reteti excursion. Shorter versions exist, but compressing Ol Pejeta into a single overnight means missing either the chimpanzee sanctuary or a proper rhino tracking drive.

What is the Samburu Special Five?

The Samburu Special Five are five species adapted to Kenya's arid north and rarely seen south of the equator: Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, gerenuk and Somali ostrich. All five are commonly sighted across Samburu National Reserve, Buffalo Springs National Reserve and Shaba National Reserve, which together form one shared ecosystem along the Ewaso Nyiro River.

Is the drive from Nairobi to Ol Pejeta and Samburu comfortable?

Yes, the route from Nairobi to Ol Pejeta runs almost entirely on tarmac and takes about three and a half hours. The stretch from Ol Pejeta to Samburu through Isiolo is a further four hours, with the final approach to most camps on well maintained murram road.

Can you visit Reteti Elephant Sanctuary independently?

Technically yes, but it is not straightforward, since Reteti sits deep inside the Namunyak Community Conservancy on a road that is unpaved for its final stretch and visits must be booked at least twenty four hours in advance. Building it into a guided itinerary from a Samburu camp removes the logistics and guesswork.

Why can't I drive my own vehicle to The Ark?

Private vehicles are not permitted beyond the Aberdare Country Club because the final approach into Aberdare National Park and The Ark itself is managed through a single shuttle system for guest safety and to limit vehicle traffic near the waterhole. Guests check in for lunch at the Country Club and transfer by shuttle from there.

What is the best time of year for this 6 day circuit?

The driest and most comfortable months are June to October and January to February, when murram roads between Ol Pejeta, Samburu and the Aberdares are in their best condition. The circuit runs year round, though the long rains in April and May can slow the final stretch of road into Reteti.

Is this itinerary suitable for a honeymoon or is it better for wildlife focused travellers?

It works well for both, though it leans toward travellers who want rhino conservation, rare wildlife and a working community conservancy over beach time or spa days. Couples looking for a more romantic pace can ask us to extend the Ol Pejeta or Samburu legs by a night each.
