Overview

About this safari

A fly-in luxury safari based at Royal Mara Safari Lodge on the Mara River, combining the exclusivity of Mara North Conservancy with a full day among the classic river-crossing points of the Masai Mara National Reserve.

A flying safari changes the shape of a Masai Mara trip before it even begins. Instead of the five-to-six-hour road transfer from Nairobi, most of it on rough murram once you leave the tarmac, you take a scheduled light aircraft from Wilson Airport and are on the ground inside the ecosystem in well under an hour, climbing over the Great Rift Valley and the Loita Hills with the plains opening up beneath you. What that buys you is time: an extra half-day of game viewing on arrival, and legs that aren’t stiff from a cross-country drive when you step off the plane and straight into your first game drive.

Where you land matters just as much as how. This itinerary is based in Mara North Conservancy, the largest of the conservancies bordering the Masai Mara National Reserve, at 69,160 acres jointly owned by more than 800 Maasai families across twelve member camps and lodges. Vehicle numbers here are capped by agreement, so a sighting that would draw a dozen vehicles in the reserve typically draws two or three in the conservancy, if that. Off-road driving and night game drives, both prohibited inside the national reserve, are part of daily life here — which is how you end up parked beside a pride at dawn rather than watching it through a line of roof hatches. Mara North is also the setting for BBC’s Big Cat Diary, built around Leopard Gorge and its resident leopards, the ‘Maternity’ and ‘Aitong’ lion prides, and, on rare mornings, Koyiaki’s own white lion.

But the conservancy can’t do everything. The dramatic Mara River crossings that define the Great Migration on television happen at fixed points — Mara Serena, Musiara Marsh, the Mara Triangle — that sit inside the Masai Mara National Reserve itself, to the south of the conservancy. So this itinerary spends one full day crossing into the reserve, timed for the classic sightings, while the remaining days stay inside Mara North’s quieter, less-driven terrain. It’s the combination most experienced Mara guides recommend when a stay is long enough to allow it: the density and drama of the reserve for one unforgettable day, and the space, access and after-dark game drives of the conservancy for the rest of your stay.

Royal Mara Safari Lodge sits on the Mara River itself, at a bend known locally as Hippo Bend Lagoon, a short distance from one of the migration’s preferred crossing points and from Leopard Gorge. Its eight river suites are raised on mahogany decks directly above the water, close enough that hippo, elephant and buffalo graze past the verandas after dark and their calls carry you to sleep. It’s a working balance of tented-camp intimacy and lodge-level comfort, ten minutes from the Mara North airstrip, which is precisely what makes the itinerary below possible: fly in, and you’re on a game drive within the hour.

AT A GLANCE:

  • Duration: 5 days / 4 nights
  • Style: Fly-in, fly-out luxury safari — scheduled light aircraft between Nairobi and Mara North airstrip
  • Locations: Mara North Conservancy (3 nights’ game viewing) and a full day in the Masai Mara National Reserve
  • Accommodation: Royal Mara Safari Lodge, Hippo Bend Lagoon, Mara North Conservancy (4 nights)
  • Experience: Morning, afternoon and night game drives, a walking safari, a Maasai village visit, and a full day exploring the national reserve’s river-crossing points
  • Best Season: Year-round resident wildlife and big cats; July to October for the dry-season migration through the wider ecosystem; December to May for the local Loita migration into the conservancy itself

Key Highlights:

  • A fly-in safari that trades a five-to-six-hour road transfer for a scenic flight of well under an hour
  • Three nights of low-density game viewing in Mara North Conservancy, including off-road driving and night game drives not permitted in the national reserve
  • A full day in the Masai Mara National Reserve itself, timed for the classic Mara River crossing points at Musiara Marsh and Mara Serena
  • Riverfront suites at Hippo Bend Lagoon, with hippo, elephant and buffalo grazing past your veranda after dark
  • A guided walking safari and a visit to a Maasai village supporting the community landowners who lease the conservancy
  • An optional dawn hot air balloon safari over the plains, champagne breakfast included

Practical Information:

Getting There

This is a flying safari throughout. Scheduled light aircraft connect Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to the Mara North airstrip in around 45 minutes, with a further 10-minute road transfer to Royal Mara Safari Lodge. The return flight on Day 5 follows the same route, landing back at Wilson Airport in time for a farewell lunch and an evening onward flight.

Best Time to Visit

Mara North Conservancy holds strong resident wildlife year-round, so this itinerary works in any season. The dry season from July to October brings the wider Great Migration through the ecosystem, with the most dramatic river crossings concentrated in the national reserve on Day 3. Between December and May, a local migration of wildebeest moves in from the Loita Hills directly into the conservancy itself, adding drama much closer to the lodge.

Physical Requirements

An easy-to-moderate itinerary suited to most fitness levels. Game drives are conducted in a 4×4 safari vehicle with no more than four guests aboard. The walking safari is gentle in pace, led throughout by an armed ranger, and can be shortened or skipped for guests who prefer to stay in the vehicle.

Your itinerary

A guide to your journey — we’ll fine-tune every day around you.

Stop1

Fly In to Mara North Conservancy

🍽 Lunch · Dinner

Transfer to Wilson Airport in Nairobi for your scheduled light aircraft flight into the Mara North airstrip, climbing over the Great Rift Valley and the Loita Hills before the Mara’s plains open up below. Your guide meets you on the airstrip for the short 10-minute drive to Royal Mara Safari Lodge, itself often a first taste of the game viewing to come.

Settle into your riverfront suite at Hippo Bend Lagoon before lunch overlooking the Mara River. In the afternoon, head out on your first game drive into Mara North’s open plains, searching for the resident ‘Maternity’ and ‘Aitong’ prides the conservancy is known for, with elephant and buffalo often grazing within sight of camp. Close the day with a sundowner at a scenic viewpoint, then dinner at the lodge.

🍽 Lunch · Dinner ✦ Flight to Mara North✦ First conservancy game drive✦ Sundowner over the plains
Stop2

Leopard Gorge and a Maasai Village

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner

An early game drive while the light is still soft, tracking toward Leopard Gorge, the BBC Big Cat Diary location where resident leopards including the famous Zawadi have denned for years, and on to Aitong Gorge, where a mother leopard has recently been raising two cubs. Stop for bush tea overlooking the gorge before returning to the lodge for a leisurely brunch.

After time at leisure – the pool, the spa, or simply your veranda as hippos wallow below – set out on foot in the afternoon with an armed Maasai ranger and tracker for a guided walking safari, reading spoor, birdlife and bush medicine at ground level. From there, visit a nearby Maasai village and boma, where the community that leases this land to the conservancy shares its traditions, homes and way of life.

As dusk falls, head out on a night game drive – a Mara North privilege not permitted inside the national reserve – spotlighting genet, civet, aardvark and the Mara’s nocturnal hunters, before returning for dinner.

Stop3

Full Day in the Masai Mara National Reserve

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner

Depart early, crossing south from the conservancy into the Masai Mara National Reserve itself for a full day among its iconic plains and river-crossing points. Head first for Musiara Marsh, a reliable spot for lion and elephant, before continuing toward the Mara River crossing points at Mara Serena and Koyiaki-Kichwa – the setting for the Great Migration’s river crossings between July and October, and still a rewarding stretch of river for hippo and crocodile at any time of year.

A picnic lunch is served out on the plains, in the shade of an acacia, before an afternoon game drive continuing through the reserve’s higher-density wildlife corridors – the trade-off for the drama here is sharing sightings with more vehicles than you’ll see anywhere in the conservancy. Return to Royal Mara Safari Lodge by evening for dinner, back in Mara North’s quieter surrounds for the night.

Stop4

Rhinos, Cheetah Country and a Farewell Bush Dinner

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner

For early risers, this is the morning for an optional hot air balloon safari, lifting off before dawn to drift over the conservancy as the plains wake below, followed by a champagne bush breakfast laid out on landing. Guests not ballooning instead set out on an early game drive toward Rainbow Hill, home to a family of white rhino, and Rhino Ridge, where black rhino periodically migrate in from the Serengeti.

Return to the lodge for a late morning at leisure, before an afternoon game drive through the territory between Royal Mara and Aitong, prime hunting ground for three resident cheetah coalitions. Close your final full day with a sundowner over the plains, then a candlelit bush dinner around a bonfire back at camp, often with light music or a Maasai dance performance marking the evening.

Fly Out and Farewell Lunch in Nairobi

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch

A final breakfast at the lodge before checking out and transferring to the Mara North airstrip for your scheduled bush flight back to Nairobi’s Wilson Airport.

On arrival, transfer into the city for a farewell lunch at the Carnivore restaurant, a fitting last taste of Kenya before the airport. In the afternoon, transfer on to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in good time for an evening international flight home.

Frequently asked questions

What should I pack for the safari?

Pack light, neutral-colored clothing (khaki, green, brown), comfortable closed-toe shoes, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars, and a camera with extra batteries. Evenings can be cool, so bring a light jacket.

Why fly instead of driving to the Masai Mara?

The road transfer from Nairobi takes five to six hours each way, much of it on unpaved road. The flight takes well under an hour and puts you inside the ecosystem itself, freeing up the better part of a day for game viewing instead of travel.

What's the difference between Mara North Conservancy and the Masai Mara National Reserve?

Mara North is a community-owned conservancy bordering the reserve, with far fewer vehicles per sighting and privileges - off-road driving, night game drives, walking safaris - that the reserve doesn't allow. The national reserve holds the classic Mara River crossing points. This itinerary is built to give you both.

Will I see the wildebeest migration on this itinerary?

Between July and October, yes, on Day 3's excursion into the national reserve, and often within the conservancy itself as herds push north. Between December and May, a separate local migration moves into Mara North directly from the Loita Hills. Outside these windows, resident wildlife viewing remains strong throughout.

Are park and conservancy fees included?

Yes. Mara North Conservancy fees and Masai Mara National Reserve fees are included for the full length of your stay, with no exceptions on the complimentary night under the current offer.

Can this itinerary be shortened or extended?

Yes. Additional nights in Mara North Conservancy can be added, and the Day 3 excursion into the national reserve can be adjusted or repeated depending on the length of your stay.
