Overview

About this safari

Comprehensive Northern Kenya Safari Through Kenya's Premier Conservation Landscapes.

This 12-day Northern Kenya safari showcases the country’s most exclusive conservation landscapes. The journey takes you through six distinct ecosystems including the Aberdare Highlands, Samburu National Reserve, Laikipia’s private conservancies, Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and Meru National Park. This comprehensive itinerary emphasizes conservation, ecological diversity and intimate wildlife encounters across the varied terrain of Kenya’s north.

Unlike standard Kenyan safaris concentrated in the Serengeti ecosystem or Masai Mara, this Northern Kenya journey reveals how wildlife thrives across dramatically different habitats. Cloud-covered montane forests harbor endangered species like bongos and forest elephants. Arid savanna supports unique northern species like Grevy’s zebra and reticulated giraffe. Private conservancies offer conservation-led approaches with smaller group sizes and more personalized guiding. This safari works for experienced travelers, wildlife photographers and anyone seeking depth beyond typical safari experiences. It suits solo travelers, couples and small groups and requires moderate fitness for walks across varying terrain.

Northern Kenya Safari Key Highlights:

  • Great elephant herds at close range
  • Big Five sightings across three conservancies
  • Grevy’s zebra and reticulated giraffe in Samburu
  • Black and white rhino tracking at Ol Pejeta
  • Wild dog sightings in the Laikipia conservancies
  • Samburu community cultural visits
  • Guided bush walks with expert trackers
  • Six distinct ecosystems in twelve days

Practical Information:

Physical Requirements

Game drives involve sitting for three to five hours in an open or partially open 4×4 vehicle up to twice daily. Guided walks on foot occur on multiple days covering two to five kilometers depending on the activity. Some walking involves uneven terrain. Moderate fitness is required. No technical climbing or mountaineering is required. Travelers with mobility concerns should contact us to discuss specific accommodations and trail modifications.

Best Time to Visit

July through October offers the most reliable game viewing when wildlife concentrations are highest following the dry season. Expect warm days and cool nights. January through March brings lush landscapes following the short rains with excellent game viewing and fewer tourists. April through June is the shoulder season with good wildlife and lower costs. Avoid the long rains from mid March through May for a first safari visit, as roads become difficult and some lodges close.

What to Bring

Pack neutral colored clothing in khaki, olive and tan in light, breathable fabrics and layering pieces. The Aberdares are cool and wet so bring a warm fleece and waterproof layer. The northern reserves are hot and dry so bring sun protection. Include sturdy hiking boots for walks, sandals for camp and a wide brimmed hat. Sunscreen SPF 50 or higher is essential. Binoculars enhance wildlife viewing significantly. A small notebook for species tracking engages many travelers more than cameras. A headlamp is useful for evening camp walks. Avoid bright colors and white clothing which disturb wildlife.

Your itinerary

A guide to your journey — we’ll fine-tune every day around you.

Day1

Nairobi Arrival to Aberdare Highlands

🍽 Lunch · Dinner 🏕 Solio Lodge

Your Northern Kenya adventure begins with an early morning arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport where your safari guide meets you. You’ll depart immediately for the Aberdare region, driving through Kenya’s central highlands past tea and coffee plantations that blanket the landscape. The Aberdares represent one of East Africa’s most important mountain ecosystems, rising above 13,000 feet and supporting a unique montane forest community.

Arrive at Solio Lodge, your base for the next two nights, set within Solio Ranch on the edge of the Aberdares. This elegant property sits within a private rhino sanctuary and offers wide views over rolling plains where black and white rhino graze in healthy numbers. Settle in with lunch followed by an afternoon at leisure. In the evening, wildlife viewing from the lodge grounds is exceptional, with rhino, plains game and prolific birdlife visible from your cottage veranda. Solio Ranch’s conservation model, protecting one of Kenya’s most successful rhino breeding populations, sets the tone for the conservation focused journey ahead.

🍽 Lunch · Dinner 🏕 Solio Lodge ✦ Central highlands scenic drive✦ First rhino sightings at Solio✦ Views over Aberdare foothills
Day2

Aberdare Highlands - Forest Exploration

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner 🏕 Solio Lodge

Spend a full day exploring the cool, forested Aberdare ecosystem which feels like an entirely different safari landscape than the open plains you’ll encounter later. Guided nature walks and drives through indigenous forest in Aberdare National Park reveal the ecology of this mountain range. You’ll learn about the plants, insects and smaller mammals that create this unique montane environment. The Aberdares are home to forest elephants, cape buffalo, bongo antelope and abundant birdlife, a biodiversity hotspot within Kenya with species found nowhere else in the country.

Return to Solio Lodge for lunch and an easy afternoon of rhino tracking on the ranch, one of the most reliable places in Africa to see both black and white rhino together. The lush, green landscape of the Aberdares provides a stark contrast to the arid savanna regions you’ll visit in Samburu and beyond. This ecosystem variation is one of the great strengths of this Northern Kenya itinerary, and by evening the forest canopy still echoes with bird calls, creating a distinctly different sensory safari experience.

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner 🏕 Solio Lodge ✦ Misty Aberdare forest walks✦ Black and white rhino tracking
Day3

Aberdare Highlands to Samburu National Reserve

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner 🏕 Saruni Samburu

After breakfast, depart northwards crossing the equator en route to Samburu National Reserve. The drive crosses varied terrain, transitioning from green highlands to arid savanna. You’ll descend from cool montane forest into increasingly dry landscape, watching the vegetation shift from dense forest to sparse acacia trees. This landscape transformation mirrors the ecological changes you’ll observe in wildlife diversity. The drive takes approximately six hours with stops at scenic viewpoints and the equator crossing.

Arrive in Samburu for lunch and settle into Saruni Samburu, a small hilltop camp of stone and thatch cottages overlooking the Kalama Conservancy, chosen to keep the safari at a consistently high end standard through this leg of the trip. The afternoon brings your first game drive, searching for the unique northern species, often called the Samburu special five, that make this ecosystem distinct. Samburu supports wildlife adapted to arid conditions including Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich and the long necked gerenuk. The reserve’s location along the Ewaso Nyiro River provides water sources sustaining wildlife in this semi desert environment.

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner 🏕 Saruni Samburu ✦ Equator crossing northbound✦ Samburu Special 5
Day4

Samburu National Reserve - Full Day Game Drives

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner 🏕 Saruni Samburu

Enjoy a full day of game drives in Samburu, renowned throughout East Africa for its rare northern species. Samburu is one of the few places in Kenya where Grevy’s zebra, a critically endangered species, still exists in sustainable populations. The reticulated giraffe found here is distinctly different from the Masai giraffe of southern Kenya with a more refined coat pattern. The Somali ostrich is taller and darker than southern species. These endemic or near endemic species make Samburu essential for serious wildlife watchers and photographers.

The semi desert landscape creates unique challenges for game viewing. Water sources concentrate animals, and your guide uses deep knowledge of these dynamics to position you for optimal wildlife encounters. You’ll see lions, leopards, cheetahs and abundant plains game adapted to arid conditions. Between drives, relax at Saruni Samburu and take in the dramatic landscape. The Samburu terrain with its rocky outcrops and narrow river valleys creates a distinctly different safari aesthetic from the wide open plains of the Serengeti region, and the camp’s elevated setting and personal service round out a comfortable, high end stay.

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner 🏕 Saruni Samburu ✦ Grevy’s zebra sightings✦ Reticulated giraffe encounters
Day5

Samburu to Lewa Wildlife Conservancy

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner

After breakfast, drive south to Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, a UNESCO listed conservation success story and one of Africa’s most prestigious conservation landscapes. Routing directly from Samburu to Lewa avoids unnecessary backtracking later in the trip and keeps the journey moving in one consistent direction. Lewa operates as a stronghold for endangered species protection with armed rangers, advanced monitoring systems and community partnerships, and has become a model for wildlife conservation across East Africa.

Arrive for lunch and settle into Elewana Lewa Safari Camp, an exclusive property offering premium access to this pristine wilderness. The afternoon brings your first game drive in Lewa. This conservancy specializes in black rhino protection with one of Kenya’s largest populations. You’ll also encounter Grevy’s zebra, another critically endangered species found in substantial numbers here, alongside lions, cheetahs and abundant birdlife. Lewa’s landscape is perhaps Kenya’s most scenic, with rolling hills, riverine vegetation and open grasslands creating varied and beautiful game viewing terrain.

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner ✦ Scenic drive into Lewa✦ Black rhino stronghold sightings✦ Exclusive conservancy game viewing
Day6

Lewa Wildlife Conservancy Full Day

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner

Spend a full day in Lewa enjoying multiple game drives and an optional guided walk. The conservancy offers excellent sightings of black rhino, Grevy’s zebra, lions, cheetahs and abundant birdlife, all within a highly scenic and exclusive landscape. Morning game drives capture predators at their most active. Afternoon game drives often yield different wildlife concentrations as animals move to water sources. Your guide, intimately familiar with individual animals and their territories, shares knowledge that transforms sightings into meaningful encounters.

The optional guided walk allows you to experience Lewa on foot, an entirely different perspective. Walking through the landscape reveals animal tracks, plant ecology and smaller wildlife that vehicles miss. Your ranger escort ensures safety while your guide provides expert interpretation. By day six of your Northern Kenya safari, you’ve already moved through cool highlands, arid savanna and now the pinnacle of conservation focused, exclusive safari experiences at Lewa.

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner ✦ Close range rhino encounters✦ Guided bush walk experience
Day7

Lewa to Ol Pejeta Conservancy

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner

After breakfast, transfer to Ol Pejeta Conservancy, widely recognized as one of East Africa’s leading wildlife conservation areas. Ol Pejeta operates on conservation first principles with rhino protection as a central focus. The conservancy is home to both black and white rhino populations, critically important within Kenya’s broader rhino recovery efforts. Ol Pejeta also houses the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, one of Africa’s few sanctuaries for orphaned and rescued chimpanzees.

Arrive at The River Camp Ol Pejeta for lunch, a relaxed tented camp set along a riverine forest within the conservancy. The afternoon game drive focuses on rhino encounters and the broader Ol Pejeta wildlife community. Your guide will explain the intensive conservation programs protecting rhinos from poaching, a continuing threat in Africa. You’ll likely encounter both black and white rhinos, each with distinct habitat preferences and behavioral characteristics. Ol Pejeta’s armed ranger patrols and anti-poaching efforts represent the reality of contemporary African conservation.

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner ✦ Arrival at Ol Pejeta Conservancy✦ Black and white rhino encounters✦ Insight into conservation efforts
Day8

Ol Pejeta to Loisaba Conservancy, Laikipia

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner

After breakfast, drive to Loisaba Conservancy in Laikipia, a vast mosaic of private and community conservancies covering over 600,000 hectares. Laikipia represents a different conservation model than national parks, with privately owned conservancies emphasizing wildlife protection through community partnerships and sustainable tourism. Finishing the safari circuit at Loisaba, rather than passing through Laikipia midway, keeps the overall routing efficient and avoids doubling back toward Samburu.

The landscape here opens into grassland with acacia woodlands. Arrive for lunch at Elewana Loisaba Tented Camp, an exclusive property offering intimate game viewing within this conservancy. The afternoon brings your first game drive in Loisaba. The conservancy approach means smaller group sizes and more personalized guiding than national parks. You’ll encounter elephants, lions, wild dogs and diverse plains game. Loisaba is particularly known for wild dog populations, one of Africa’s most endangered predators, and your guide will explain the conservation programs operating here that involve local communities in wildlife protection.

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner ✦ Laikipia open landscape views✦ Wild dog territory exploration✦ Private conservancy game drives
Day9

Loisaba Conservancy Full Day

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner

Spend a full day enjoying diverse experiences within Loisaba Conservancy. Morning and afternoon game drives search for the full complement of Laikipia wildlife. The conservancy supports robust predator populations including lions, leopards and cheetahs. Herbivore diversity is exceptional with elephants, buffalo, various antelope species and giraffes concentrated here by the conservancy’s effective management. Your guide, deeply familiar with individual animal families and territories, positions you for meaningful encounters.

The afternoon may include a cultural visit with local Samburu communities who live within and around the conservancy. These interactions are conducted respectfully with financial benefits flowing directly to communities. Guides explain how wildlife conservation and community livelihoods are integrated here, an educational component that deepens understanding of African conservation challenges and solutions. By day nine, you’ve moved from highlands through arid savanna and three separate conservancies, and this ecosystem diversity is what distinguishes the Northern Kenya safari from single region itineraries.

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner ✦ Wild dog and predator tracking✦ Samburu cultural interaction
Day10

Loisaba to Meru National Park

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner

After breakfast, continue east to Meru National Park, one of Kenya’s most remote and pristine protected areas. Meru represents a different conservation model than the private conservancies you’ve visited. As a national park, it emphasizes protection of vast wilderness rather than community partnerships. The landscape is characterized by dense vegetation, multiple river systems and a sense of remote African wilderness.

Arrive for lunch and settle into Elewana Elsa’s Kopje, a striking camp built into a rocky outcrop overlooking the plains where Elsa the lioness, of Born Free fame, once roamed. The afternoon brings your first game drive in Meru. This park is dramatically different from the open savanna of the Serengeti or even Samburu. Vegetation is denser, rivers are more prominent and the overall landscape feels wild and underdeveloped compared to more popular parks. This is intentional, as Meru National Park protects vast areas from heavy tourism impact, maintaining ecological integrity. You’ll encounter diverse wildlife in this lush landscape including elephants, buffalo, lions and numerous antelope species, and the park is also known for its birdlife with over 400 recorded species.

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner ✦ Riverine and dense landscapes✦ First Meru game drive
Day11

Meru National Park to Nairobi

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner

After an early breakfast and short morning game drive in Meru, depart and drive back toward Nairobi. The journey takes approximately seven hours, transitioning from the remote wilderness of Meru back toward Kenya’s urban center. You’ll have time to reflect on the remarkable diversity you’ve experienced across the safari. From the cool montane forests of the Aberdares through arid Samburu, the conservation focused conservancies of Lewa, Ol Pejeta and Loisaba, and finally the remote wilderness of Meru, you’ve encountered Kenya’s premier safari landscapes.

Arrive in Nairobi in the late afternoon and check in at Emara Ole Sereni Hotel for your final evening. This hotel offers luxurious accommodation and excellent dining for your last night in Kenya. You can rest, process the safari experience or explore Nairobi’s attractions. The transition from remote wilderness back to urban Africa provides perspective on conservation challenges and the role safari tourism plays in wildlife protection funding.

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner ✦ Final Meru game drive✦ Wilderness to Nairobi transition✦ Evening in Nairobi
Day12

Exceptional safari experience - seamlessly organised, insightful guides, truly memorable throughout! We recently completed a safari in Kenya with Afrikan Accent Adventures, and it was truly an exceptional experience from start to finish. Our itinerary covered the breathtaking Masai Mara, the beautiful Lake Nakuru, scenic Lake Naivasha, and the stunning Amboseli National Park - each destination offering something unique and unforgettable. From incredible wildlife sightings to spectacular landscapes, every day exceeded our expectations. We saw more than we ever imagined - big cats in action, large herds of elephants, rhinos, and countless other animals in their natural habitat. The entire experience was perfectly organised, smooth, and completely stress-free. A very special mention goes to our guide, Nico, who was outstanding. His knowledge of wildlife, sharp eye for spotting animals, and passion for the safari experience made a huge difference. Thanks to him, we saw far more than we expected and learned so much along the way. He was patient, professional, and made every game drive exciting. We would also like to sincerely thank Hellen, the organiser, for putting together such a seamless and well-planned itinerary. Everything - from communication before the trip to accommodations and logistics on the ground - was handled flawlessly. As a group of four friends traveling together, we couldn’t have asked for a better safari. We highly recommend Afrikan Accent Adventures to anyone planning a trip to East Africa. They are truly excellent, and we would absolutely travel with them again!

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

How many days is this Northern Kenya safari itinerary?

The itinerary runs 12 days and 11 nights, starting and ending in Nairobi, and covers six ecosystems including the Aberdares, Samburu, Lewa, Ol Pejeta, Loisaba and Meru.

What wildlife will I see on a Northern Kenya safari?

Expect black and white rhino, elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk and over 400 recorded bird species across the different parks and conservancies.

What is the best time of year for this safari?

July through October gives the most reliable game viewing during the dry season. January through March also offers excellent viewing with fewer tourists, following the short rains.

Do I need to be fit for this itinerary?

Moderate fitness is enough. Game drives mean sitting in a vehicle for a few hours at a time, and guided walks cover two to five kilometers over some uneven terrain.

Is this safari good for a first visit to Kenya?

Yes, though it suits travelers who want more depth than a single park visit. The mix of national parks and private conservancies gives a fuller picture of Kenyan conservation than a Masai Mara only trip.

What should I pack for this Northern Kenya safari?

Pack lightweight, breathable clothing in neutral tones like khaki, olive, and tan. Avoid bright colors and white (which can scare wildlife), as well as dark blue or black (which attract tsetse flies). Since you will experience vastly different microclimates, layering is key: bring a warm fleece and a waterproof windbreaker for the chilly mountain mornings in the Aberdares, and a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and SPF 50+ sunscreen for the hot, arid northern plains.

Is a camera or binoculars necessary?

While your professional guide will have a pair of binoculars in the safari vehicle, having your own high-quality pair (ideally 8x42 or 10x42) will completely transform your viewing experience, especially when spotting wild dogs or leopards in dense brush. For photographers, a DSLR or mirrorless camera paired with a long telephoto lens (at least 300mm–400mm) is best suited for the open sightlines across the northern frontiers.
