Lake Naivasha Day Trip from Nairobi | Boat Ride, Crescent Island and Hell’s Gate National Park

The drive from Nairobi to the southern shore of Lake Naivasha covers approximately 90 kilometres on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway through Mai Mahiu and the Rift Valley descent, then along South Lake Road to the boat launch. The Rift Valley escarpment viewpoint on the descent is worth a brief stop for the view: the lake, Mount Longonot’s volcanic cone and the floor of the Rift spread below in a single frame. Total drive time from Nairobi is approximately 90 minutes at a 6:30am departure.

Arrive at Fisherman’s Camp or Elsamere on South Lake Road and board your lake boat. Lake Naivasha covers approximately 139 square kilometres at its current level and sits at 1,884 metres above sea level, making it one of the highest freshwater lakes in the East African Rift Valley. The freshwater status is unusual – most Rift Valley lakes are alkaline — and the freshwater ecosystem is what drives the remarkable wildlife density on and around the lake.

The boat moves through the papyrus channels along the southern shore first, where hippo pods surface in the shallow margins and the density of waterfowl is highest. African fish eagles hold territories along the papyrus edge and call throughout the morning. Your guide identifies the resident species as the boat moves: African darter, little egret, grey heron, African jacana, black crake and, depending on season, migrant waders on the mudflats. The lake records over 400 bird species in total across the year.

Hippos in Lake Naivasha are best observed from the boat. The lake’s hippo population fluctuates but concentrates in the shallower bays along the southern and eastern shores. The boat approaches to a safe distance for photography and the guide explains the territorial behaviour of the pods – which bulls hold which sections of shore and how the territorial boundaries are maintained. Out on open water, the boat moves between floating papyrus islands and open lake surface, scanning for the African fish eagle before the turn toward Crescent Island.

The boat lands at Crescent Island Game Sanctuary, a private island enclosure at the eastern end of Lake Naivasha. Crescent Island is 2.5 kilometres at its longest and is the only wildlife experience in the Kenyan Rift Valley where guests walk freely on foot among large herbivores with no guide vehicle, no fence between the animals and no predators on the island. Giraffe, zebra, waterbuck, wildebeest, Thomson’s gazelle and impala share the island with a large waterbird population.

The walking safari is guided. The guide sets the pace and the route, reads the animal behaviour and positions the group for the best encounter approach with each species. Walking among giraffe at close range is a different experience from any vehicle game drive. At ground level, the scale of the animal is different. A Maasai giraffe at five metres standing still while you approach to three metres on foot produces a stillness in the encounter that a vehicle sighting does not. The giraffe here are habituated to foot traffic but are not tame. They move, graze and behave entirely naturally.

The island was the location used in the 1966 film Born Free for scenes requiring open wildlife access on foot. The film connection is incidental to the experience but gives a sense of why the island was chosen – the combination of open savannah terrain, lake backdrop and close-range wildlife access is exceptional within the Naivasha ecosystem.

The walking safari covers the island circuit at the group’s pace, typically 90 minutes to two hours depending on wildlife positions and the group’s interest in specific sightings. Lunch can be taken at the island picnic area before the return boat to the lake shore, or the group returns to a lakeside restaurant on South Lake Road before the drive to Hell’s Gate. Your guide will advise on the best timing based on the morning program pace.

Walking among giraffe on Crescent Island at close range, with Lake Naivasha and Mount Longonot behind them, is one of the most specific wildlife photographs available within two hours of Nairobi. No zoom lens required.

Hell’s Gate National Park is 5 kilometres from the Crescent Island boat return point, making the transition from island to park a short and direct drive with no backtracking. The park gate on Moi South Lake Road opens the 90-square-kilometre park, one of the smallest national parks in Kenya by area and one of the most distinctive in landscape character.

Hell’s Gate takes its name from the narrow gorge through which geothermal steam once vented at the southern end of the park. The landscape is volcanic in origin – basalt columns, towering rust-coloured cliffs, the 25-metre Fischer’s Tower rock column standing isolated on the gorge floor and the active geothermal vents that produce steam from the earth’s surface throughout the year. The park provided the landscape reference for the animators of The Lion King in 1994 and was used as a filming location for Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in 2018.

The gorge walk begins at the upper gorge entrance and moves through Fischer’s Tower and into the main Hell’s Gate Gorge. The gorge walls reach 30 metres in height and the path follows the seasonal watercourse along the gorge floor. At the geothermal vents further into the gorge, steam rises from fissures in the rock and the temperature drops noticeably from the open park above. The walk is approximately 4 kilometres through the gorge and exits at the lower end, where your guide and vehicle meet the group for the return.

Outside the gorge, Hell’s Gate is one of the only national parks in Kenya where guests cycle freely among the wildlife on designated park roads. Zebra herds graze along the main park road. Thomson’s gazelle and eland move between the acacia scrub sections. Buffalo have been recorded along the Ol Njorowa Gorge edge. Mountain bikes and hybrid bikes are available for hire at the park gate at a small additional charge. Cycling from the gate to the gorge entrance takes approximately 20 minutes each way on flat tarmac and gravel road and is the most time-efficient way to cover the park circuit before the gorge walk.

Olkaria Geothermal Spa sits at the Hell’s Gate park exit road, between the park gate and the return route to Nairobi. It is a natural hot spring facility fed by the Olkaria geothermal field – the largest geothermal power installation in Africa, which generates approximately 45% of Kenya’s total electricity from the volcanic activity beneath the Naivasha basin. The same underground heat source that powers the national grid feeds the spa pools at temperatures that vary between different sections of the facility.

The spa offers a choice of pool temperatures from warm to hot, with outdoor pools set in a garden overlooking the Hell’s Gate escarpment. After a full day of boat, island walk and gorge walk, an hour in the Olkaria pools is the correct way to close the program before the drive home. The spa also has shower facilities and a small snack and drinks area. Entry is at a separate fee paid directly at the facility.

The spa is optional and not required to complete the day’s program. Guests with very early evening departures from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport can skip the spa and go directly from the Hell’s Gate exit to the Nairobi Road. Your guide manages the timing throughout the day to ensure the spa option remains viable if you want it.

The return drive from Olkaria or the Hell’s Gate gate to Nairobi covers the same 90-kilometre route on the Naivasha road, climbing back out of the Rift Valley and into Nairobi from the west. The Rift Valley escarpment at sunset on the ascent is a reliable end to the day. Arrive at your Nairobi hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport by approximately 7:00pm to 7:30pm depending on traffic.
