Pongwe Beach Hotel — Zanzibar
About this property
A tented gem on a private conservancy — intimate luxury where the wild begins at your deck.
Overview
Pongwe Beach Hotel is a 23-room boutique resort tucked into what The Telegraph’s destination expert called perhaps the most magnificent cove in Zanzibar — a crescent of white sand and coral lagoon on the island’s quieter east coast, sheltered from the crowds of the north and the kite-surfing beaches of the southeast. Because the hotel faces due east, the Indian Ocean sunrise lifts straight out of the water in front of the rooms every morning, a rarity on the island. With 23 rooms rather than 200, a genuinely protected swimming lagoon, and a kitchen run by a World Master Chef, it has built a devoted following of returning guests and a “wonderful” 9.2–9.3 rating across booking platforms.
About the Property
The hotel spreads across a coastal garden of palms and tropical flora between a low cliff and the sand, with accommodation arranged in six distinct categories, each positioned differently within the property: clifftop suites with private plunge pools and elevated sunrise views, beachfront rooms a few steps from the lagoon, and shaded garden rooms wrapped in coastal forest. All face east; all are within a short walk of the beach. The atmosphere is barefoot and unhurried rather than corporate — no vast buffets or entertainment programmes, just a small team who know their guests by name.

Location
Pongwe sits on the east coast of Unguja, roughly midway up the island, on a small cove sheltered by a coral reef. The village is tiny and the beach uncrowded — a deliberate contrast to Nungwi and Kendwa in the north. At high tide the lagoon fills for protected swimming; at low tide the reef flat opens up for walking, tidal-pool exploring and visits to the local seaweed farms. Stone Town is around an hour away for day trips, Jozani Forest and the spice farms are easy excursions, and the airport transfer takes about 45 minutes.
Accommodation
The 23 rooms and suites are furnished in a relaxed Swahili-coastal style with air-conditioning, ceiling fans, en-suite bathrooms, free toiletries, linens and towels, tea/coffee facilities, free Wi-Fi and terraces, balconies or verandas. Positioning is what distinguishes the categories: the Cliff Ocean Suites sit high with private pools and complete seclusion, the beachfront rooms and suites put the sand directly outside the door, and the garden rooms offer the coolest, most private setting away from the sea view.
Dining
Dining is a standout. The open-sided oceanfront restaurant serves a menu that changes daily around whatever the local fishermen land that morning, prepared by Executive Chef Gabriel Le Roux, a World Master Chef with three decades in professional kitchens. Two weekly fixtures — the Friday Swahili Buffet and the Tuesday Beach Barbecue — are open to non-residents by advance reservation, and the bar handles sunset (and sunrise) drinks with the ocean a few metres away. Dietary requirements and celebration arrangements are best flagged when booking direct.
Facilities
Private beach with loungers and towels, outdoor infinity-style pool with sea views, private plunge pools (Cliff Ocean Suites), spa and wellness/massage, oceanfront restaurant and bar, room service, garden and terraces, free Wi-Fi throughout, laundry, luggage storage, airport shuttle, free parking, board games, bicycle hire, canoes, snorkelling equipment, dive arrangements and deep-sea fishing charters. Accessible rooms are available.
