About this property

Luxury safari travellers and honeymooners, families (family tents and private house), photographers chasing the definitive Kilimanjaro-elephant shot, guests wanting walks, sundowners and off-park exclusivity

Overview

Tortilis Camp is one of Kenya’s original and most decorated luxury tented camps — the Amboseli address by which others are measured. Named after the flat-topped Acacia tortilis trees that shade it, the camp spreads along a low hill in the private Kitirua Conservancy on Amboseli’s quiet south-western border, with an unobstructed, dead-on view of Mount Kilimanjaro. Part of the Elewana Collection, it pairs elegant thatched tented suites with famously warm hosting, exceptional guiding and food that guests rank among the best on safari — much of it grown in the camp’s own garden. A 4.8 rating from around 400 reviewers keeps it at the top of Amboseli’s luxury tier.

About the Property

Established in 1993 and continuously refined since, Tortilis was a pioneer of eco-tourism in the ecosystem: solar-powered, community-partnered, and instrumental in protecting the Kitirua corridor that elephants use between Amboseli and Tanzania. Its 16–18 spacious tents sit on raised timber decks under high makuti thatch, each with uninterrupted mountain views. The main lounge, bar and dining banda occupy the hilltop with a panoramic terrace, and an infinity-edge pool with its own bar looks straight at Kilimanjaro. Because the camp sits in a private concession, guests enjoy bush walks, sundowners on the plains and game drives in both the conservancy and the park.

Quick Facts

  • 16 classic tents plus family configurations, a honeymoon tent and a Private House
  • Private ~30,000-acre Kitirua Conservancy on Amboseli’s south-western border
  • Full-frontal Mount Kilimanjaro views from every tent and the pool
  • Infinity pool with pool bar; spa/massage tent
  • Renowned kitchen with Italian influence and its own organic vegetable garden
  • Eco-pioneer: solar power, community partnership and corridor conservation since 1993
  • Walks, conservancy drives and sundowners unavailable to in-park lodges
  • ~45-minute flight from Nairobi Wilson to Amboseli airstrip, then ~45-minute game-drive transfer

Location

The camp lies in the Kitirua private conservancy at the far south-western corner of the Amboseli ecosystem — the quietest side of the park, where wildlife drifts between Amboseli’s swamps and the Tanzanian border woodlands. Kilimanjaro rises immediately to the south, so close that the summit ice fields feel touchable at dawn. Game drives cover both the exclusive conservancy and the national park proper (entering via the western gates), and the Amboseli airstrip is about 14 km away; Nairobi is roughly 240 km by road (4–5 hours), though most guests fly.

Accommodation

Each tent is a generous canvas suite under soaring makuti thatch on a raised deck: king or twin beds, elegant safari furnishings, en-suite bathroom with hot shower (bathtubs in some categories), bathrobes and slippers, a writing desk, safe, Wi-Fi and a wide private veranda framing Kilimanjaro. Family tents pair a second children’s tent or room with the main tent; the honeymoon tent adds extra seclusion and romance. The Private House — with one en-suite double bedroom, one en-suite twin, its own lounge, kitchen, staff and vehicle — gives families or small groups a fully exclusive base with glorious mountain views.

Dining

Tortilis is famous for its food: pan-African menus with a strong Italian accent, built on produce from the camp’s own vegetable garden and served wherever the moment suggests — the hilltop dining banda, the terrace under the stars, private bush breakfasts among the acacias or sundowners out on the plains as Kilimanjaro turns pink. House wines, beers and spirits are included on package rates, and honeymooners and celebrants are spoiled with personal touches.

Facilities

Infinity swimming pool with pool bar and Kilimanjaro views, spa/massage tent, hilltop lounge, bar and dining banda with panoramic terrace, gift shop, organic vegetable garden, Wi-Fi in tents and common areas, laundry service, solar power throughout, charging facilities, and the camp’s own 4×4 safari fleet and expert Maasai guides.

Why Choose Tortilis Camp

  • The definitive Kilimanjaro view — the camp was sited for it, and every tent, the pool and the dining terrace face the mountain square-on
  • Amboseli’s most storied luxury camp: three decades of awards, repeat guests and guide excellence
  • Private-conservancy freedom — bush walks, sundowners and uncrowded drives in 30,000 exclusive acres, plus full park access
  • Food worth travelling for, from the camp garden to the table
  • Real conservation pedigree: Tortilis helped secure the Kitirua elephant corridor and remains solar-powered and community-partnered
  • Superb for families — dedicated family tents, generous child policy (under-12s free with parents), and the exclusive Private House
  • Honeymoon magic: a dedicated honeymoon tent, private dinners and Elewana’s celebrated personal touches
  • Effortless fly-in access from Nairobi with game-viewing en route from the airstrip

Get There

  • By air (recommended): ~45-minute flight from Nairobi Wilson to the Amboseli airstrip, then a ~45-minute road/game-drive transfer to camp through the park and conservancy.
  • By road from Nairobi: ~240 km / 4–5 hours via the Namanga road to the Meshanani gate or via Emali to the Kimana gate, then across the park to the western side.
  • Park access: Park fees are payable for game drives inside Amboseli National Park; the camp itself sits in the private Kitirua Conservancy.

Activities

  • Game drives in Amboseli National Park — the great elephant herds beneath Kilimanjaro
  • Exclusive game drives in the private Kitirua Conservancy, away from all crowds
  • Guided bush walks with Maasai guides — a rarity in the Amboseli ecosystem
  • Sundowners on the plains as the light fades on Kilimanjaro
  • Bush breakfasts, garden lunches and starlit private dinners
  • Birdwatching (400+ species) and photography with the mountain as backdrop
  • Maasai cultural visits and community project tours
  • Swimming, spa treatments and quiet hours on the veranda; balloon safaris arrangeable
