Your Afrikan Accent Adventures representative meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport, depending on your arrival flight. The transfer to Arusha takes approximately 45 minutes to one hour from Kilimanjaro and 20 minutes from Arusha Airport, through the outskirts of Tanzania’s safari capital with views of Mount Meru – Africa’s fifth-highest peak at 4,566 metres – rising above the northern edge of the city on clear days.

Arusha is the gateway to Tanzania’s northern safari circuit and the operational base for this itinerary. Spend the rest of your arrival day at the hotel: rest, acclimatize and use the facilities. If you arrive with time to spare, the Arusha Cultural Heritage Centre and the Maasai craft markets near the Clock Tower are within easy walking distance of the central hotels.

In the evening, your guide conducts a full safari briefing covering the route, the parks, what to expect for wildlife in the current season, packing recommendations for the vehicle and campsite, and any questions about the days ahead. The briefing typically takes 45 minutes to one hour. This is the best time to raise any dietary requirements, medical considerations or personal preferences so they can be factored into the program from the start.

Depart Arusha after an early breakfast, typically by 7:00am. The drive to Tarangire National Park covers approximately 118 kilometres southwest of Arusha through the Maasai steppe, taking around two hours on the Dodoma road. The landscape changes from the green agricultural belt around Arusha to semi-arid acacia scrub and open savannah as you approach the park boundary.

Tarangire National Park covers 2,850 square kilometres of miombo woodland, grassland and seasonal swampland along the Tarangire River, which runs through the heart of the park and functions as the primary water source during the dry season. The river draws extraordinary concentrations of wildlife between June and October, when animals from surrounding areas converge on the permanent water. The elephant population in Tarangire is the largest of any national park in Tanzania. Herds of 50 to 200 animals are not unusual at the river during dry season mornings.

Beyond elephants, the park holds all members of the Big Five. Tarangire’s tree-climbing lions are a specific feature of this ecosystem, resting in the branches of the ancient sausage trees and baobabs that define the park’s landscape. The baobabs themselves are a reason to spend a full day here. Some of the specimens along the Tarangire River are estimated at over 1,000 years old and reach 25 metres in height. No other landscape in Tanzania’s northern circuit looks like this.

Full-day game drive with picnic lunch served in a designated scenic area inside the park. Exit the park in the late afternoon and transfer to your campsite or lodge near the park boundary for dinner.

An early departure from Tarangire after breakfast begins the longer drive day of the itinerary. The road climbs through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area highlands, passing through Karatu town and the Ngorongoro gate before descending toward the Serengeti through the Malanja Depression. The route through the Ngorongoro highlands is one of the most scenic road sections in northern Tanzania: rolling green hills, Maasai boma settlements, cattle herds on highland grassland and, on clear days, a view back toward Mount Kilimanjaro to the southeast.

Entry to the Serengeti through the Naabi Hill Gate on the southeastern boundary marks the transition from highland to open plain. The gate is at an elevation of approximately 1,800 metres and the Serengeti floor drops away below. The first game drive begins immediately on entry, covering the Seronera region – the central Serengeti – which holds the highest year-round concentration of predators in the park. The Seronera River and its confluences are where lion prides, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas are located most consistently.

Named from the Maasai word “Siringet” meaning “endless plains,” the Serengeti covers 14,763 square kilometres and contains the most famous wildlife ecosystem in Africa. Between July and October, the Great Wildebeest Migration brings over 1.5 million wildebeest, 400,000 zebra and 200,000 Thomson’s gazelle through the northern and western sections of the park. In January and February the calving season occurs in the southern Serengeti, attracting the largest concentration of predators in the world. Both windows are exceptional for different reasons.

Arrive at your Serengeti campsite or lodge in the late afternoon after full game drive coverage en route. The public campsites at Seronera are inside the park perimeter, which means wildlife moves through camp at night. Lions have been heard and occasionally seen from Seronera public campsite. Take the campsite night wildlife briefing seriously.

A full day in the Serengeti. No transfers, no departures, no road driving outside the park. The entire day is spent on game drive circuits through the central and, depending on season and migration position, northern or western Serengeti.

Departure from camp by 6:30am. The first two hours of a Serengeti morning are the most productive for predator activity: lions returning from a night hunt, cheetahs climbing termite mounds to scan, leopards descending from overnight tree positions before the heat builds. Your guide plans the morning circuit based on radio updates and the previous day’s sightings. The Serengeti guiding network shares information across vehicles and the guide’s knowledge of which pride holds which territory is the primary difference between a productive and unproductive day.

The Great Migration, when present in the Serengeti, changes the character of a game drive completely. A wildebeest herd of 50,000 animals on the move across a Serengeti plain is a different sensory experience from any other safari encounter. The sound, the dust, the scale and the predator activity running alongside the herd are not things a photograph fully conveys. Between July and October this is the most likely scenario in the northern Serengeti. Between January and March the calving grounds in the south offer a different version of the same spectacle.

Two full days in the Serengeti is the minimum that does this ecosystem justice. One day gives you the landscape. The second day is when you understand how it works.

An early departure from the Serengeti after breakfast begins the drive toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The journey from Seronera to the Ngorongoro Crater rim takes approximately three hours through the conservation area entrance gate at Lodoare and up through the Ngorongoro highlands.

The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact and unflooded volcanic caldera, formed approximately 2.5 million years ago when a volcano of the same height as Mount Kilimanjaro collapsed inward. The caldera floor covers 264 square kilometres at an elevation of 1,700 metres, enclosed by walls that rise 400 to 600 metres above the floor. The enclosed ecosystem supports a permanent wildlife population of approximately 25,000 large mammals without the need to migrate seasonally, because the crater provides year-round water, grass and cover.

Descend the crater wall on a dedicated descent road, dropping 600 metres from the rim to the floor in approximately 20 minutes. The game drive covers the crater floor circuits including the Lake Magadi flamingo flats, the Lerai Forest leopard zone, the Munge River hippo pools and the open grassland lion and cheetah territory in the central crater. The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most reliable locations in East Africa to find black rhino. The crater population of around 25 individuals is small but concentrated in the Lerai Forest and the southwestern crater sections.

Picnic lunch at the designated hippo pool site near the Ngorongoro hippo pools, the most scenic lunch stop in the northern Tanzania circuit. After lunch, continue the crater floor drive before ascending in the afternoon and beginning the three-hour return drive to Arusha via Karatu. Arrive in Arusha by early evening for hotel or airport drop-off.
