Flying Safari4 Days Masai Mara Budget Safari | Enkakenya Camp, Olare Orok River
About this safari
Three nights on the Olare Orok River at an intimate, eco-conscious tented camp, reached by road rather than charter flight, with a pride of lions that passes the camp entrance most evenings.
This itinerary is built for travellers who want the full Masai Mara experience without the cost of a fly-in package: a private road transfer from Nairobi in place of a domestic flight, three full nights at a genuine bush camp, and two full days of game drives in one of the richest wildlife conservancies bordering the reserve. Enkakenya sits directly on the Olare Orok River, with just eleven tented suites, an organic kitchen garden that supplies the camp’s own kitchen, and a resident pride of around fifteen lions known to pass the camp entrance at sunset.
Choosing the road transfer over a scheduled flight is the single biggest saving on a Masai Mara safari, and it comes with its own reward: a full day’s drive west across the Rift Valley floor and up onto the Mara plains, watching the landscape change before the first game drive even begins.

Practical Information:
Physical Requirements
This is an easy safari with one long travel day at the start and end. Game drives take place seated in a private 4×4 Land Cruiser, typically for two to four hours per session. The road transfer between Nairobi and the Mara takes around five to six hours each way, with rest stops built in. No technical terrain or strenuous activity is involved. Guests with mobility concerns should contact us before booking.
Best Time to Visit
July through October is peak season for the Great Wildebeest Migration, with the heaviest river crossing activity in August and September. Outside this window, the Olare Orok Conservancy holds strong resident wildlife year-round, including the local lion pride that frequently passes camp, making this itinerary a good value option in any season rather than only during the migration months.
Getting There
This itinerary is entirely road-based. The drive from Nairobi to the Masai Mara covers approximately 270 kilometres and takes around five to six hours, running through the Rift Valley via Narok. Enkakenya sits within the Olare Orok Conservancy on the reserve’s northern boundary. The same private vehicle and driver-guide handle the return transfer to Nairobi on Day 4.

Road Transfer from Nairobi to the Masai Mara
🍽 Lunch · Dinner
Road Transfer from Nairobi to the Masai Mara
Depart Nairobi in the morning for the drive into the Rift Valley and on toward the Masai Mara, approximately five to six hours with a stop en route. Arrive at Enkakenya Camp in the early afternoon, set directly on the banks of the Olare Orok River, where every tent faces the water. Settle in over a late lunch, then head out on your first afternoon game drive into the surrounding conservancy, timed to return for sundowners as the camp’s resident lion pride is often heard, and sometimes seen, near the entrance at dusk.
Day2
Full-Day Olare Orok Conservancy Game Drive
🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner
Full-Day Olare Orok Conservancy Game Drive
A full day exploring the Olare Orok Conservancy, one of the private conservancies bordering the Masai Mara National Reserve, with a lower vehicle density than the busiest sections of the reserve itself. Picnic lunch is taken in the bush. Guides track the resident lion pride alongside leopard, cheetah and dense plains game, with the conservancy’s private status permitting activities such as guided walks that are not allowed inside the national reserve.
Day3
Masai Mara National Reserve Game Drive
🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner
Masai Mara National Reserve Game Drive
The second full day pushes into the Masai Mara National Reserve itself, entering through the nearest gate for a wider circuit of the reserve’s plains and river systems. Between July and October, the day can be positioned toward the Mara River crossing points for a chance at the Great Wildebeest Migration. Outside this window, the reserve’s resident big cat population and large herds of elephant, buffalo and plains game make for a rewarding full day regardless of season.
Day4
Return Drive to Nairobi
🍽 Breakfast
Return Drive to Nairobi

What guests say about this safari
oh clever
Safari Bookings · May 2026Mike, Nairobi's best driver and friendly commentator The tour begins with the delightful Kariboussana Man’s friendly explanations of the streets and scenery, starting at dawn. Even with a small group, his ingrained friendly manners and natural guiding instincts are truly admirable. I also appreciate his innocent enthusiasm and excitement when explaining things, especially when there is high interest in the animals within Nairobi National Park. The restaurant recommendations provided a truly special and satisfying experience. Thanks to Mike, I was guaranteed a wonderful day starting from the Windsor Hotel. I was deeply touched when Mike came to find the clothes I had accidentally left in the car at night.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a road transfer make this a more budget-friendly Masai Mara safari?
The domestic flight to and from the Mara is one of the largest single costs on a typical fly-in safari. This itinerary replaces that flight with a private road transfer, which is significantly less expensive while still delivering the same three nights in camp and the same game drive time once you arrive.
Is Enkakenya Camp still a good quality property despite the lower-cost road option?
Yes. Enkakenya is a genuine eco-conscious tented camp with just eleven suites directly on the Olare Orok River, an organic kitchen garden and a full-board, guided game drive programme. Choosing the road transfer over a flight is a cost decision on transport, not a downgrade in camp quality.
How long is the drive to the Masai Mara from Nairobi?
The drive covers approximately 270 kilometres and takes around five to six hours each way, running through the Rift Valley via Narok. We build in a rest stop on the outbound and return legs.
When can we see the wildebeest migration on this itinerary?
The Great Wildebeest Migration Mara River crossings occur between July and October, with the heaviest activity in August and September. Outside this window, the Olare Orok Conservancy’s resident lion pride and year-round plains game make this a rewarding safari in any season.
Is this itinerary suitable for a first Masai Mara safari?
Yes. Three nights gives enough time for two full game drive days without the rushed feel of a shorter trip, and the road transfer, while longer than flying, is a straightforward and comfortable way to see the Rift Valley landscape en route.
