Lake Manyara National Park | Tanzania's Tree-Climbing Lion Paradise

Nestled beneath the towering western escarpment of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Manyara National Park is one of Tanzania’s most scenic and ecologically diverse safari destinations. Established in 1960 and centered around the shallow alkaline waters of Lake Manyara, the park stretches along the base of the Rift Valley escarpment and encompasses an impressive variety of habitats including lush groundwater forests, open grasslands, acacia woodlands, marshes, hot springs and the lake itself, which covers nearly two-thirds of the protected area during periods of high water levels.

Lake Manyara National Park is internationally famous for its rare tree-climbing lions, one of the few populations in Africa known to regularly rest in the branches of acacia and sausage trees. While the exact reason for this unusual behaviour remains debated, visitors from around the world travel here hoping to witness one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife spectacles.

The park is equally renowned for its impressive elephant population. Large breeding herds and solitary bulls are frequently encountered moving through the forested areas and open floodplains, often providing exceptionally close wildlife encounters. Unlike many parks where elephants inhabit open savannahs, Lake Manyara offers the unique opportunity to observe these giants within dense forest environments beneath towering mahogany and fig trees.

Another defining feature of the park is its extraordinary birdlife. With more than 400 recorded bird species, Lake Manyara ranks among East Africa’s premier birdwatching destinations. Seasonal flocks of flamingos often gather along the lake’s shores, creating spectacular pink horizons, while pelicans, storks, kingfishers, herons, hornbills, fish eagles and migratory birds thrive throughout the park’s diverse habitats.

The groundwater forest at the park entrance is one of the most beautiful in East Africa. Fed by underground springs originating from the Ngorongoro Highlands, this evergreen forest creates a cool, almost tropical atmosphere and supports large populations of olive baboons, blue monkeys, vervet monkeys, and numerous bird species. The park is particularly famous for its enormous baboon troops, some of the largest concentrations found anywhere on the continent.

Wildlife viewing in Lake Manyara is exceptionally varied despite the park’s compact size. Visitors regularly encounter buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, impalas, waterbucks, hippos, warthogs and bushbucks, while predators such as leopards, spotted hyenas, serval cats and lions add excitement to game drives. The famous Hippo Pool remains one of the most reliable locations in northern Tanzania for observing hippos throughout the year.

Beyond wildlife, Lake Manyara offers some of the most dramatic scenery in East Africa. The towering Great Rift Valley escarpment rises more than 600 metres above the lake basin, creating spectacular backdrops for photography and unforgettable safari panoramas. The park’s Maji Moto hot springs further highlight the geological activity that shaped this remarkable landscape.

One of Lake Manyara’s greatest strengths is its accessibility. Located just 126 kilometres from Arusha, it is often the first stop on Tanzania’s Northern Circuit safaris and combines perfectly with nearby destinations including Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Serengeti National Park.
