Flying SafariWomen of the Wild | 8 Days Samburu to the Masai Mara
About this safari
A women-only journey across Kenya's northern frontier and southern plains, guided entirely by women, from the Samburu Special Five to the roar of the Masai Mara.
Before the first game drive, before you even meet your guide, this journey gives you a night inside a genuine sanctuary: the Wangari Maathai Wing at Sarova Panafric, Kenya’s first hotel wing reserved solely for female guests. Six ensuite rooms, a female-only staff that extends to housekeeping, room service and security, and a space built around one idea: that a woman travelling alone or with other women deserves to feel completely at ease from her very first night in Nairobi. Named for Africa’s first female Nobel Peace Prize laureate, it sets the tone for everything that follows.
Your vehicle, your guide and your pace: this journey is built for the solo female traveler or for the women you choose to bring along, entirely yours from start to finish. From Nairobi, the route moves north into the ochre plains of Samburu for a rare encounter with species found almost nowhere else on earth, drops south to the flamingo-fringed shores of Lake Nakuru, and closes with three unhurried nights in the Masai Mara.

Every guide, driver and camp host is female, this is a journey for the solo female traveler or your own group, you stay on the women-only Wangari Maathai Wing at Sarova Panafric, and the route runs Samburu, Lake Nakuru and three nights in the Masai Mara. |

Game drives are seated in a 4×4 safari vehicle, exclusive to your travelling party with your all-female team; the Samburu beadwork visit and Maasai women’s enterprise visit both involve short periods of standing and walking on uneven ground. The route is entirely road-based, with the longest legs being Nairobi to Samburu and Nakuru to the Masai Mara, each around five to six hours, with rest stops on all road legs.
Best Time to Visit
Shaba and Lake Nakuru offer strong resident wildlife year-round. July through October adds the Great Wildebeest Migration and Mara River crossings to the Masai Mara leg of this itinerary, with the heaviest crossing activity in August and September.

Arrival in Nairobi
🍽 Dinner
Arrival in Nairobi
You are met at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport by Hellen Asiko, Director and Guest Experience Curator at Afrikan Accent Adventures, for your private transfer to the Sarova Panafric’s Wangari Maathai Wing, Kenya’s first hotel wing reserved solely for female guests. Once settled, take a short walk to plant a seedling in the hotel gardens, a small, symbolic gesture that opens every one of our women’s journeys. The evening closes with a welcome dinner, where Hellen walks you through the days ahead over Kenyan coffee and conversation.

🍽 Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner
Nairobi to Shaba National Reserve
From this morning, your dedicated female driver-guide from Afrikan Accent Adventures takes over for the remainder of your safari. After breakfast, depart Nairobi for the road journey north to Samburu, around five to six hours trading the city skyline for the russet plains of Kenya’s northern frontier, with a stop en route. Your guide brings you directly to Sarova Shaba, a lodge built around natural springs and doum palms on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River. After lunch, set out on your first game drive in search of the Samburu Special Five: Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx and Somali ostrich, species found almost nowhere else in Kenya.

Full Day in Shaba National Reserve & Reteti Elephant Sanctuary
A full day to explore Shaba’s volcanic hills, natural springs, and riverine forest, tracking elephant, lion, and leopard alongside the Special Five, with your guide reading tracks and calls as she has for years. In the early afternoon, visit a nearby Samburu women’s beadwork cooperative, where intricate collars and jewelry are handcrafted using techniques passed down through generations.
Late in the afternoon, head to the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary for a private, intimate feeding session with Samburu’s “Milk Mamas”—the local women caretakers who hand-raise orphaned elephant calves and mix custom milk formulas. It is a powerful, inspiring look at community-led wildlife conservation driven by women. Return to Sarova Shaba for a relaxed evening and dinner under the stars beside the Ewaso Nyiro River.

Lion Hill sits on a forested ridge above the lake itself, with views stretching over one of Kenya’s most protected ecosystems. The afternoon is left unhurried and open, whether that means a spa treatment at camp, quiet time by the river, or a short guided nature walk with your guide along camp’s private grounds. As evening falls, gather around the campfire for stories, including your guides’ own journeys into a profession still largely led by men.

Frequently asked questions
What should I pack for the safari?
Pack light, neutral-colored clothing (khaki, green, brown), comfortable closed-toe shoes, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars, and a camera with extra batteries. Evenings can be cool, so bring a light jacket.
Is a women-only safari actually safer than a mixed group safari?
Kenya's licensed safari vehicles and camps are safe for all travelers. What this itinerary adds is a fully female service chain, guide, driver and host, plus a women-only hotel floor in Nairobi, so there is no point in the trip where you're relying on the presence of men you haven't chosen to travel with.
Can I book this safari as a solo traveler?
Yes. Solo travelers have the vehicle and guide entirely to themselves, or may invite their own companions to travel together. A single supplement applies if you'd like a private room throughout; ask us for current rates.
Are the driver-guides genuinely certified, or is this a marketing label?
Every guide is KPSGA-certified, the same professional qualification held by Kenya's top male guides. Being female is additional to that standard, not a substitute for it.
What is the Wangari Maathai Wing at Sarova Panafric?
It's a dedicated women-only floor at the Sarova Panafric hotel in Nairobi, named for Wangari Maathai, Africa's first female Nobel Peace Prize laureate and founder of the Green Belt Movement, with its own access control.
When can we see the wildebeest migration on this itinerary?
The Great Wildebeest Migration Mara River crossings occur between July and October, with the heaviest activity in August and September, covered during your three nights in the Masai Mara.
Can this itinerary be adapted for your own group of friends or a corporate women's retreat?
Yes. This exact route can be run for your own group on a date of your choosing. Ask us about departures and group rates.
