Tawi Lodge
About this property
A tented gem on a private conservancy — intimate luxury where the wild begins at your deck.
Overview
Tawi Lodge is Amboseli’s benchmark boutique eco-lodge: just 13 elegant cottages set in cool, lush gardens within a private conservancy at the very foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, five minutes from the park’s Kimana gate. Every cottage faces the mountain — you can watch the snows of Africa’s highest peak from your bed or your bathtub — while the main lodge overlooks a busy waterhole where elephants, giraffes and plains game come to drink. An eco-award-winning operation that blends green innovation with unpretentious contemporary luxury, Tawi offers what in-park lodges cannot: private game drives without crowds, night drives, guided walks and camel safaris across its own wildlife-rich acres.
About the Property
The lodge was built with conservation at its core — it partners with the African Wildlife Foundation, and its conservancy (part of the Kilitome/Tawi concession) protects a vital corridor for Amboseli’s elephants. The main house holds a reception, bars, elegant dining areas, a library, a Maasai-art souvenir shop and even a wine cellar; outside are a unique bio-pool (naturally filtered), a sun terrace, a massage and wellness area with hot tub, and gardens that feel like an oasis in the dry Amboseli landscape. Cottages are spread either side of the main lodge for privacy, each with a fireplace for cool evenings and a wooden deck for mountain-gazing.

Location
Tawi sits on the south-eastern edge of the Amboseli ecosystem, where acacia woodland opens toward the dry lake beds and Kilimanjaro-fed swamps of the national park, with the mountain — all 5,895 metres of it — rising straight ahead across the Tanzanian border. The Kimana gate is a five-minute drive, so guests enjoy the fastest possible access to Amboseli’s elephant herds, then return to the peace of a conservancy shared with no other lodges. Nairobi is about 4 hours by road via Emali; the Amboseli airstrip is ~14 miles away with lodge transfers available.
Accommodation
The 13 cottages are individually sited for privacy and all orientated to Kilimanjaro. Each is elegantly designed with a king or twin beds, a cosy fireplace, a sitting area, spacious hanging cupboards and a large lockable wooden chest for valuables, plus an en-suite bathroom with a large bathtub positioned for mountain views and a separate shower. Wide wooden-deck verandas invite sundowners in front of your own slice of the mountain; a family cottage/suite configuration accommodates parents with children.
Dining
The kitchen wins consistent praise — refined, generous cooking served in the dining room, on the terrace overlooking the waterhole, or out in the bush: lantern-lit bush dinners, bush breakfasts and picnic lunches are all signatures (at modest supplements), and the wine cellar stocks a proper selection for pairing. The restaurant is family-friendly and caters comfortably for vegetarian, vegan, halal, kosher, gluten-free and dairy-free diets, and the game-package rate includes house wines, beers, soft drinks and selected spirits.
Facilities
Naturally filtered bio-pool with sun terrace and waterhole views, massage and wellness area with hot tub, bars and lounge, dining room and terrace, library, wine cellar, Maasai-art souvenir shop, gardens, children’s play area, free Wi-Fi, laundry, airport-strip shuttle, and the lodge’s own safari vehicles and guides for park and conservancy drives.
