Amboseli Sopa Lodge
About this property
Classic safari-goers on the Amboseli circuit, families, groups and tour series, Kilimanjaro view seekers, honeymooners (dedicated suite), conferences and retreats
Overview
Amboseli Sopa Lodge is a much-loved classic of the Amboseli circuit: a rustic, Maasai-inspired retreat set on 200 acres of private wooded grounds in the very foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. Built on the site where Hollywood legends once stayed during the filming era of the 1950s, the lodge looks straight up at Africa’s highest mountain, whose snows dominate the horizon on clear mornings. With 83 cheerful cottage-style rooms, a huge pool, and gardens alive with monkeys, birds and the occasional duiker, it delivers the full safari-lodge experience at friendlier prices than the in-park properties — and its 4.5 rating from nearly 1,000 reviewers reflects famously warm staff and generous buffets.
About the Property
The lodge’s architecture and décor are inspired by Maasai culture — earthy colours, rounded forms and vivid artwork — spread through mature gardens of acacias, frangipani, bougainvillea and giant cacti. Wildlife wanders freely: vervet monkeys, mongooses, squirrels, duikers, gazelles and even the occasional leopard pass through the grounds, while the hilltop bar serves what many guests call the best sundowner view of Kilimanjaro anywhere. The lodge is part of the Sopa Lodges collection, with the brand’s trademark full-board hospitality, and offers bush dining, Maasai cultural performances and an open-air craft market on site.

Location
The lodge stands on its own 200-acre estate off the Emali–Loitokitok road near Kimana, on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro just across the border ridge from Tanzania. Amboseli National Park’s gate is a 30–45 minute drive, close enough for morning and afternoon game drives, while the location outside the park means no nightly park fees for the lodge itself and a genuinely peaceful setting. Kimana Wildlife Sanctuary is nearby, Nairobi is about 4 hours by road, and the Amboseli KWS airstrip (a 30-minute flight from Wilson) is roughly an hour’s transfer away.
Accommodation
The 83 rooms are arranged in cottage clusters through the gardens, each spacious and colourfully decorated in Maasai-inspired style with a private patio or terrace, en-suite bathroom with bidet and free toiletries, safe, mosquito nets and Wi-Fi. Interconnecting rooms suit families, two rooms are wheelchair accessible, and the honeymoon suite adds extra romance and privacy. Rooms are fan-cooled rather than air-conditioned — evenings at this altitude are naturally cool.
Dining
The restaurant serves generous buffet breakfasts, lunches and dinners mixing international dishes with Kenyan flavours — guests praise the daily fish option, salads from locally grown vegetables, soups and desserts, with vegetarian choices always available. Meals can be taken on the outdoor terrace facing the mountain, and the lodge arranges memorable bush breakfasts and sundowner bush dinners, plus celebration cakes and song for special occasions.
Facilities
Large outdoor swimming pool, hilltop view bar and main bar with TV, lounge, restaurant and outdoor dining terrace, firepit, gift shop, open-air Maasai craft market, two conference rooms (up to 110 pax), babysitting on request, laundry service, 24-hour security, free Wi-Fi and free parking; common areas are wheelchair accessible.
