This briefing is the most detailed of any itinerary we run because the migration safari has moving parts that a fixed circuit does not.

Transfer to Arusha Airstrip after breakfast for the scheduled bush flight to the Serengeti, approximately 60 to 90 minutes depending on routing. The aerial approach crosses the Ngorongoro Conservation Area highlands and descends into the Central Serengeti, where the endless plains extend to every horizon below the aircraft. Landing at Seronera Airstrip, your private guide meets you and the first Serengeti game drive begins immediately en route to your lodge.

The Central Serengeti at Seronera is the most productive year-round wildlife zone in the park. The Seronera River and its seasonal tributaries concentrate predators in a relatively compact area. The resident lion prides here are some of the most studied in the world. Your guide tracks their positions daily using radio intelligence from the broader Serengeti guiding network. Cheetahs on the open kopje plains north of Seronera, leopards in the riverine fig trees along the Seronera River and elephant families moving through the central woodland are all standard Seronera encounters.

A full day in the Central Serengeti with no transfers. Departure from camp at 6:30am for the early game drive, the most productive two hours of any Serengeti day. The Seronera Valley predator concentration is the reason this circuit exists as a separate two-day programme rather than a single transit day en route to the north. Lions here are resident and territorial. The Seronera River prides have been tracked continuously since the 1960s and the individual animals are known by the guiding team. Leopards use the fig tree galleries above the river and are most visible before 9:00am.

Mid-morning the circuit expands to the central plains kopjes north of Seronera where cheetah families use elevated rocks as scanning platforms. The kopje country also produces the best elephant encounters in the central zone; large family groups moving between the granite outcrops and the seasonal waterholes. Picnic lunch in the field at a scenic location chosen by your guide based on the morning’s sightings.

Afternoon game drive continues on a different circuit from the morning, giving the guide flexibility to follow up on intelligence from other vehicles and explore zones not covered earlier. Return to lodge at golden hour for sundowners and dinner.

Two days at Seronera is not repetition. The first day shows you the Serengeti. The second day, when you know which lion pride holds which territory and your guide repositions based on overnight movement, is when you understand how this ecosystem actually functions.

After an early breakfast, depart the Central Serengeti for the Northern Serengeti migration corridor. The transfer north is by short scheduled bush flight or, for guests who prefer it, by scenic game drive through the Serengeti ecosystem, covering approximately 130 kilometres and four to five hours with continuous game drive coverage en route. The flight option takes 25 to 35 minutes and lands at Kogatende or Lamai Airstrip in the northern zone.

The landscape in the Northern Serengeti is different from Seronera. The open plain gives way to rolling hills, acacia woodland and the rocky drainage lines of the Mara River system. The corridor between the Lobo Hills and the Mara River is where the Great Wildebeest Migration herds concentrate between July and October before the river crossings. At peak season, the hillsides in this zone hold hundreds of thousands of wildebeest visible simultaneously.

Arrive at Sayari Camp for lunch. Sayari Camp, one of the most established camps in the northern zone, sits in a grove of acacia trees with the Mara River accessible by vehicle within minutes.

Afternoon game drive positions immediately at the Mara River crossing sites. Your guide reads the herd behaviour and crocodile positions to identify the most likely crossing point. On days when a crossing occurs, the vehicle stays at the site for the duration.

This is the day the entire safari has been built around. Departure from camp by 6:30am to position at the Mara River crossing sites before the herds begin their morning movement toward the water. The guide has been on the radio since before dawn with other guides in the network, tracking the overnight herd positions and identifying which crossing points showed activity at first light.

The Mara River crossing in the Northern Serengeti operates differently from any other wildlife encounter. A crossing does not announce itself. A herd of 30,000 wildebeest will approach the bank, mill in circles for two to four hours and then either commit to the water or turn back entirely. When they commit, the event is simultaneously immediate and prolonged: the lead animals jump, the mass follows, the crocodiles intercept, the current takes animals that lose their footing and the surviving animals emerge on the opposite bank and move north toward the Kenyan side of the ecosystem. A large crossing can last 45 minutes. Then the bank empties and the guides reposition for the next herd.

Picnic lunch at a scenic location in the field. Your guide determines the lunch stop based on whether crossing activity is continuing. On active crossing days, lunch is taken at the vehicle while maintaining position at the river. The afternoon continues at the river or on the open migration plains searching for predator activity alongside the herds: lions taking calves at the herd margins, cheetahs working the flanks, leopards in the woodland fringe and hyena clans following the movement.

Return to Sayari Camp at sunset for gourmet dinner and campfire. The northern camps are positioned in the migration corridor and wildebeest movement through camp at night is normal during peak season.

The Mara River crossing is the only wildlife event on earth that can be described accurately as both expected and completely unpredictable. The herds are there. The crocodiles are there. When the crossing starts is known to nobody

After a final early morning game drive in the Northern Serengeti, transfer to Kogatende or Lamai Airstrip for the scheduled flight to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, approximately one hour. The flight crosses the Serengeti plain and rises into the volcanic highlands, and the Ngorongoro Crater becomes visible from the air as the aircraft descends; a 264-square-kilometre caldera floor enclosed by walls reaching 600 metres above it.

Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater immediately on arrival. The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact and unflooded volcanic caldera, formed approximately 2.5 million years ago when a massive volcano collapsed inward. The enclosed ecosystem supports approximately 25,000 large mammals year-round without seasonal migration: lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffalo, hippos, wildebeest and zebra, all within 264 square kilometres. The black rhino population of approximately 25 individuals concentrated in the Lerai Forest and the southwestern crater sections makes this one of the most reliable black rhino viewing locations in East Africa.

The full crater floor game drive covers the Lerai Forest leopard zone, the Lake Magadi flamingo flats in the southwestern crater, the Munge River hippo pools and the open central grassland where lion prides hold territory. Picnic lunch at the hippo pool site. Continue the drive after lunch before ascending the crater wall in the late afternoon to your luxury rim lodge.

Ngorongoro Lion’s Paw sits on the eastern crater rim with panoramic crater views from every terrace.

After a leisurely breakfast at Ngorongoro Lion’s Paw with one final view across the crater, transfer to the nearby airstrip for the bush flight back to Arusha. The flight takes approximately one hour and crosses the Ngorongoro highlands and the agricultural landscape of northern Tanzania before landing at Arusha Airstrip.
