Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge
About this property
A tented gem on a private conservancy — intimate luxury where the wild begins at your deck.
Overview
Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge is the flagship in-park address of Amboseli: a celebrated lodge styled after a Maasai manyatta, tucked into a grove of fever trees beside the lush Enkongo Narok swamp with Mount Kilimanjaro rising directly beyond. Being inside the national park means elephants, buffalo and waterbirds graze the swamp edges within sight of the rooms, and dawn game drives begin the moment you leave the lodge — prime time for the classic photograph of elephants crossing beneath the snows of Kilimanjaro. Part of the respected Serena Hotels collection, the lodge pairs its location with warm service, a strong 4.6 rating from nearly a thousand reviewers, and full resort comforts.
About the Property
The lodge’s architecture is a love letter to Maasai culture — low, rounded, ochre-coloured buildings with hand-painted wall motifs, carved artwork and vivid textiles by local artists throughout. First built in the early 1970s and repeatedly refreshed since, it wraps around lush gardens where weaver birds colonise the fever trees and vervet monkeys patrol the lawns. The freeform pool looks toward the mountain, the terrace bar overlooks a busy waterhole and the swamp beyond, and evenings bring Maasai dance performances and storytelling around the fire.

Location
The lodge occupies one of the finest positions in Amboseli — on the southern side of the park where the Enkongo Narok swamp draws elephants, hippo, buffalo and huge concentrations of waterbirds year-round, with Kilimanjaro filling the horizon behind. Observation Hill, the park’s classic viewpoint, is about ten minutes’ drive; the Amboseli airstrip is similarly close, making fly-in stays effortless. All the park’s game-drive circuits radiate from the doorstep, and Maasai cultural villages lie just outside the park gates.
Accommodation
The 92 rooms are arranged in single-storey wings through the gardens, each decorated in rich Maasai style with hand-painted motifs, local artwork and safari textiles, and each with a private balcony or veranda facing the gardens, swamp or mountain. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms, ceiling fans, telephone, minibar/refrigerator, tea/coffee facilities, free Wi-Fi and daily housekeeping with room service. Family rooms and interconnecting configurations suit parents with children, while the Ol Donyo Oibor Suite — named for the “white mountain” — adds a private lounge, panoramic balcony and premium service for honeymooners and VIPs.
Dining
The restaurant serves lavish buffet breakfasts, lunches and dinners blending international cuisine with Kenyan and pan-African dishes, with themed nights and live cooking a regular feature. Meals and drinks flow onto the terrace overlooking the waterhole, and the lodge’s signature experiences — bush breakfasts by the swamp, sundowner cocktails facing Kilimanjaro and romantic private dinners — turn dining into part of the safari itself.
Facilities
Outdoor swimming pool with mountain views, spa therapy and massage services, terrace bar and lounge overlooking the waterhole, gift shop, jogging/nature trail, gardens, conference and meeting facilities, babysitting/child services, concierge and tour desk, currency exchange, airport-strip shuttle, free Wi-Fi, laundry/valet, room service and free parking.
